The Evidence of a Living Faith

Introduction

Text: James 1:1–18 Supporting Text: 1 Corinthians 13 Big Idea: Just as physical life shows evidence through movement, reproduction, and growth—spiritual life does too. And the driving force behind it all is love.

Opening Scripture:

James 1:1–18 NIV

James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings. Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business. Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

Background

The Slow Road to Acceptance

James gained acceptance into the canon very slowly, but from the end of the fourth century onward there was no dispute about its position until the time of the Reformation.1 The reasons for this hesitation were varied. James was not so much rejected as neglected—while evidence for its use and authoritative status is not as early or widespread as desired, very few early Christians who knew the letter dismissed it.2 The neglect may have stemmed from the early church’s tendency to link Scripture with apostles; since James was a common name and at least two prominent New Testament Christians bore it, this engendered confusion about the author and rendered uncertain any connection between James and apostolicity.2 It was largely Origen’s influence on three scholars—Rufinus, Jerome, and Augustine—that encouraged the general acceptance of James as canonical.1

Luther’s Theological Crisis

Luther’s objections were fundamentally different. Luther’s quest for peace with God ended with his discovery of Paul’s teaching about justification by faith alone, which became for him and his followers “the doctrine on which the church stands or falls.”2 He saw James as contradicting the teaching of Paul on which he based his belief in justification by faith alone.1

WHAT DOES LIFE LOOK LIKE?

Science tells us there are three core signs of life:

Movement

Growth

Reproduction

You can have structure, appearance, even form—but if these are missing, there is no life.

SIGN #1: MOVEMENT – A LIVING FAITH RESPONDS TO TRIALS

James 1:2–4 NIV

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Key Thought:

Dead things don’t move. But living things respond.

Spiritual Movement:

Faith moves in trials toward God

Faith produces , not passivity action

Application:

Do you move in difficulty? toward God or away from Him

Trials are not meant to stop you—they're meant to move you!

Tie to 1 Corinthians 13:8-9

Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part,

SIGN #2: GROWTH – A LIVING FAITH MATURES

James 1:4 NIV

Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

If it’s alive—it grows.

Spiritual Growth Includes:

Wisdom (James 1:5)

James 1:5 NIV

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.

Stability (not tossed – 1:6–8)

James 1:6–8 NIV

But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

Humility (1:9–11)

Endurance (1:12)

Indicator:

If you are the same spiritually today as years ago—something is wrong.

Growth isn’t just knowledge—it’s becoming more loving

SIGN #3: REPRODUCTION – A LIVING FAITH PRODUCES LIFE

James 1:15–18 NIV

Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death. Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

Sin produces death

But God produces new birth

“…of his own will begat he us with the word of truth…”

Key Thought:

Everything alive reproduces.

Two Reproductions in the Passage:

Sin reproduces death (v. 15)

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing. Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

Ministries without love = noise

Service without love = empty

Influence without love = ineffective

LOVE is what makes reproduction real and eternal.

V. THE CONNECTING TRUTH: LOVE IS THE LIFE FORCE

VI. PRACTICAL CLOSE

Ask your congregation:

1. Are you MOVING spiritually?

Or are you stuck in place?

2. Are you GROWING?

Or have you plateaued?

3. Are you REPRODUCING life?

Or only producing activity?

Final Anchor:

A living Christian life is not just:

Busy—it’s loving

Growing—it’s loving

Enduring—it’s loving

Because:

“The greatest of these is charity (love).”
