Maybe you’ve been on a lake or a slow-moving river—in a boat without an anchor? It’s peaceful at first. The sun is warm, the breeze is gentle, and you don’t even notice how far you’ve gone until you look up and realize the shoreline isn’t where you left it.
It didn’t happen intentionally...YOU JUST DRIFTED.
Hebrews is a letter of warning to a Jewish community of believers who were in danger of drifting spiritually . They were not jumping ship in a dramatic way. Not renouncing Jesus as the Messiah. They’re just slowly, quietly, and unintentionally drifting away from the anchor of truth that they had heard—the Gospel of Jesus Christ
Feeling the pull of the surrounding culture...the weariness of persecution...the allure of their ancient religion that felt more impressive; whatever they were facing the warning is clear

AVOID THE DRIFT — ANCHOR TO THE SON

Summer, a more relaxed season...travel, recreation, family vacations...but it brings with it a great risk— a slow gradual drift away from the faith that keeps us anchored to Jesus.
RAFTING/CALM/CURRENT
Have you ever found yourself being casually pulled in every direction except the one that matters most? Drifting away from the one who died to draw you near?
Life is full of drifting currents — doubt, distraction, discouragement, divided cultural tensions, and…doctrinal drift.
POINT 1: "The greatest danger isn't running from Jesus—it's slowly drifting away from Him."
The book of Hebrews was written to a weary, wavering community tempted to give up on their faith. Its message is timeless for us still today.
Hebrews 6:19 “This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.
This series is a reminder that the danger is real—AVOID THE DRIFT—ANCHOR TO THE SON
PRAYER/BIBLES
(S3)
Before we talk about the danger of the drift, the writer sets the anchor; he opens not with a warning, but with a declaration—God's revelation reaches its climax in Jesus Christ
{Heb. 1:1-2}
Illustration - Picture a family who, for generations, wrote letters. A great-grandfather during the war, writing home about hope in hard times. A grandmother decades later, writing about faith through loss. A mother, writing about trusting God through a diagnosis. Each letter, read on its own, is meaningful — but incomplete. A fragment of a bigger story.
Then imagine a grandchild, going through a box of these letters after the mother's funeral, and finding one more — written years earlier by the mother, addressed to be read only after her death. In it, she explains: every letter before this one was pointing toward what she wanted her child to understand about faith, and this final letter pulls it all together. Suddenly the earlier letters make sense in a way they never did before. Nothing is contradicted — it's completed.
That's the picture of Hebrews - God didn't scrap the prophets or start over with Jesus. Every previous word — Abraham, Moses, David, Isaiah — was a letter in the box, true and meaningful on its own, but pointing toward a final Word that would pull it all together.
POINT 2: Jesus isn't a new message - He is the complete message
The people were aware of their history—how God had spoken to the prophets through angels
To Moses at the burning bush. To Samuel in the temple. To Isaiah, Jeremiah
He spoke in law and in poetry, in prophecy and in parables, in thunder and in a still, small voice
The phrase He spoke "at many times and in various ways” is a summary of the O.T.
But now something has changed—God was speaking by the ONE who is His Son.

I. God Has Spoken — And His Final Word Is a Person

The author doesn’t even use Jesus’ name yet, because the point isn’t the name—its the person whom God had sent—This is not a mere messenger of God. This is His own Son
(S4) — {Heb. 1:3-4}
Jesus doesn't just reflect God, He reveals, the radiance of God's glory"
Jesus is not a partial picture of God, but the exact representation of His being"
Jesus didn’t just create and walk away; He actively, sustains all things by His word"
Jesus is the finished work, dieing on a cross for the SIN of the world
Jesus returned to God in glory, sitting down at His right hand.
Jesus is "Superior to the angels"
We live in an age with more "voices" than ever — media, influencers, ideologies. Hebrews reminds us there is a final Word that outweighs them all
POINT 3: Jesus is BETTER; He is the ANCHOR for our souls
Now here is where the writer turns from theology to warning...

II. The Danger of Drifting (2:1-4)

(S5) — {2:1}
"drift" (pararreō)—a nautical term. “It means to slip away, to drift past, to be carried along by a current you didn’t even notice.”
It’s not a violent shipwreck of their faith—It’s a quiet, gradual, almost invisible movement away from it. That’s what makes it so dangerous.
We don’t drift from Jesus on purpose. We drift because we weren’t paying attention. The same kind of warning Paul gave the Corinthians...
1 Corinthians 10:12 “If you think you are standing strong, be careful not to fall.”
Confidence in our own spiritual stability is often the first sign of drift. It’s when we stop holding and start slipping from the anchor that holds
A boat mooring to a dock, slips away not through one dramatic event, but through a slowly loosening rope no one noticed.
Confidence in our own spiritual stability, in our selves, is often the first sign of drifting.
Illustration. It's the person who says, "I've been a Christian for thirty years—I'm good." The one who assumes because they grew up in the church, they don't need to pay attention anymore.
Here is what I have discovered, most people don’t generally decide to just leave the church; walk away from their faith—they drift until one day, they have no need or the church or Jesus.
Three dangers of drifting in our relationship with Jesus…
(S6)

1. DRIFTING AWAY FROM THE TRUTH

Colossians 2:8 “Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ.”
Not the worlds truth, our truth, but Jesus who is God’s truth — the way the truth and the life
When we drift from the truth we start to doubt, questions biblical authority, or relax our Christ-like morals—Jesus is God’s truth? The further we drift from Jesus the further we drift from God
Tension: Most people don't reject truth in one bold decision. They drift — distracted by busyness, competing voices, the worlds truth...
POINT 3: WHEN WE DRIFT FROM THE TRUTH, WE’E STOPPED PAYING ATTENTION
Illustration: A kayaker set out on a calm morning. The water was glass. The sky was clear. He didn’t bother to check the tide charts. He just paddled out. But while he was enjoying the view, the current was slowly, steadily pulling him away from shore. By the time he realized what was happening, he was a mile out, exhausted, and the shore was a distant line. He was rescued—but barely. He later said, "I wasn’t trying to go anywhere. I just wasn’t paying attention."
Church, that’s what spiritual drifting looks like. You don’t plan to walk away from Jesus. You just stop paying attention to Him. You stop reading. You stop praying. You stop gathering with the church. You stop listening for His voice. And slowly, almost imperceptibly, the current of the world carries you further and further from the shore of grace.
Have you ever felt distant from God? Is your life anchored in Jesus? The way the truth, and the life?
(S7) — {2:2-3)
...the Israelites were instructed to fear God
Deuteronomy 4:10 “Never forget the day when you stood before the Lord your God at Mount Sinai, where he told me, ‘Summon the people before me, and I will personally instruct them. Then they will learn to fear me as long as they live, and they will teach their children to fear me also.’”
The writer is saying: if the message spoken through angels—the law given at Sinai—was binding, and every violation and disobedience received a just penalty, how much more binding is the message spoken by the Lord Himself?
Galatians 3:19 “Why, then, was the law given? It was given alongside the promise to show people their sins. But the law was designed to last only until the coming of the child who was promised. Go
The problem today is we don’t fear God...the message of God, revealed in Jesus
Romans 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Drifting doesn’t look dangerous at first. Sometimes it looks like distraction. Sometimes it looks like settling for a version of faith that has quietly replaced Jesus with something else.
Illis. Just like drifting on a boat in the open seas can pull us further and further away from the safe shore, drifting away from jesus is drifting into danger
Colossians 1:23 “But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News.
(S8) The second danger…

2. DRIFTING AWAY FROM THE GREATER SALVATION

The writer names the drift, as ‘neglecting the greater gift’
"It was first announced by the Lord" — this is not a human invention. Jesus Himself proclaimed it.
Luke 4:18 ““The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News...
"It was made known to us by those who heard Him" — the apostles, the eyewitnesses, passed it on faithfully.
1 Corinthians 15:3 “I passed on to you what was most important and what had also been passed on to me. Christ died for our sins, just as the Scriptures said.”
To "neglect" is ameleō (G272) “to be careless about, to make light of, to treat as unimportant.”
It’s not active rebellion. It’s passive indifference. It’s the shrug. It’s the "I’ll get to that later." It’s the assumption that because you heard the gospel once, you’re covered, and you can move on to other things.
Illustration: Neglect is different from rejection — a garden isn't destroyed by a bulldozer, it's lost to weeds no one pulled.
POINT 4. Drifting is Ignoring sin in our life - NEGLECT THE GREATER Gift of forgivness
The work is done. The sacrifice is made. But if you never receive it, never live in it, never anchor your life to it, you have neglected the very thing God gave everything to give you.
What are the "damaging currents” in your life pulling you gently away from the salvation you received in Christ?
(S9)
This greater salvation was further validated and authenticated by God himself
4 “And God confirmed the message by giving signs and wonders and various miracles and gifts of the Holy Spirit whenever he chose.”
“A sign communicates information—the miracles performed by Jesus and the apostles were not merely meant to impress crowds but to convey the truth of God’s larger revelation.”
Healing (wholeness)...water into wine (blessing)...walking on water (power)
“Wonders were meant to attract attention - to awaken one to the need for Jesus”
Jesus promised his disciples that they would “receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you” to become his witnesses
When Jesus is no longer our anchor, the third danger...
(S10)

3. DRIFTING CAN MAKE US SPIRITUALLY INEFFECTIVE

“Without the Holy Spirit’s empowerment, believers become ineffective in ministry because they lack the essential source of God designed for all kingdom work—this power isn’t optional but foundational to any meaningful service.
A church that has drifted, from the Holy Spirit, can never fulfills its mission.
The more we drift the spirit given to us...we become spiritually dull and in danger of missing what God desires to do in and through us. It is less likely we will be used by God.
POINT 5. You can't drift toward God's purpose—you must intentionally stay anchored to Christ.
John 15:4 “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me.”
(S11)

Three Steps to Stay Anchored

Church, I don't want to just leave you with a warning this morning. I want to give you something you can walk out of here and do this week. So here are three practical, concrete steps to keep you from drifting:
The dangers of drifting
1. Drifting away from the truth
Drop Your Anchor Daily — Get in the Word.
2. Drifting away from the greater salvation
Check Your Position — Get Honest with God.
3. Drifting can make us spiritually INEFFECTIVE
Stay Close to Jesus— Get in Community.
"Am I closer to Jesus today than I was six months ago?"
"Is there anything in my life that I need to surrender to Jesus?"
"Have I been neglecting my salvation—treating it as background noise instead of the main thing?"
"The greatest danger isn't running from Jesus—it's slowly drifting away from Him."
