What Is Jesus’ Full Name, What Did He Look Like, and Did He Have a Dog?

Those are three very interesting questions:

What is Jesus’ middle and last name?

What did Jesus look like?

Did Jesus have a dog?

Let’s begin with His name.

What Is Jesus’ Middle and Last Name?

Jesus did not have a middle and last name like we do today.

“Christ” is not Jesus’ last name. Christ is a title.

The name Jesus means, “The Lord saves.”

The angel told Joseph:

“You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” —Matthew 1:21

Christ means “Messiah” or “Anointed One.” So when we say “Jesus Christ,” we are saying:

Jesus, the promised King and Savior.

In Bible times, people might identify someone by their father, their hometown, or their occupation. Jesus was sometimes called:

Jesus of Nazareth

Jesus, the carpenter

Jesus, the Son of Joseph

Jesus, the Son of David

Jesus, the Son of God

But the Bible gives Jesus many names and titles because one name alone cannot fully describe how wonderful He is.

He is called:

Immanuel — God with us

Savior — the One who rescues us from sin

Messiah — God’s promised King

Son of God — fully divine

Son of Man — fully human and the promised ruler

Lamb of God — the sacrifice who takes away sin

The Word — God revealed to us

Lord — our Master and King

Good Shepherd — the One who knows, leads, and protects His sheep

Prince of Peace — the One who brings us peace with God

Wonderful Counselor

Mighty God

King of Kings

Lord of Lords

Alpha and Omega — the beginning and the end

Every name teaches us something about His nature and His character.

His names tell us that Jesus is holy, loving, powerful, faithful, gentle, just, merciful, and able to save.

The Seven “I Am” Statements

Jesus also used seven special “I am” statements in the Gospel of John.

He said:

“I am the Bread of Life.” Jesus satisfies the deepest hunger of our souls.

“I am the Light of the World.” Jesus shows us the truth and leads us out of darkness.

“I am the Door.” Jesus is the entrance into salvation and safety with God.

“I am the Good Shepherd.” Jesus knows His sheep and gave His life for them.

“I am the Resurrection and the Life.” Jesus has power over death.

“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” Jesus is the only way to the Father.

“I am the True Vine.” We need to remain connected to Jesus in order to grow and bear spiritual fruit.

These statements do not only tell us what Jesus does. They tell us who Jesus is.

Jesus does not merely give bread. He is the Bread of Life.

He does not merely show a road. He is the Way.

He does not merely teach truth. He is the Truth.

He does not merely bring life. He is the Life.

What Did Jesus Look Like?

The Bible does not give us a detailed description of Jesus’ face, hair, eye color, height, or build.

Jesus was born into a Jewish family and grew up in the Middle East, so He probably looked like an ordinary Jewish man living in that time and place.

Isaiah said that the Messiah would not have a special physical beauty that caused everyone to follow Him simply because of His appearance.

Jesus did not come to impress people with outward beauty. He came to reveal the beauty of God’s character.

We do not know exactly what Jesus’ face looked like, but we know what His heart looked like.

We see His compassion when He touched the leper.

We see His tenderness when He welcomed children.

We see His courage when He confronted false teachers.

We see His power when He calmed the storm.

We see His mercy when He forgave sinners.

We see His love when He willingly went to the cross.

We see His victory when He rose from the dead.

So how beautiful does Jesus look?

With our physical eyes, we cannot see Him today. But through the Bible and through the eyes of faith, we can truly know Him.

Peter wrote about believers who had never physically seen Jesus:

“Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible.” —1 Peter 1:8

We are not physical eyewitnesses like Peter and John were, but through their testimony in Scripture, we can become convinced spiritual witnesses.

The Holy Spirit opens our understanding so that we can see the glory of Jesus through God’s Word.

Did Jesus Have a Dog?

The Bible never tells us that Jesus had a dog.

He may have seen many dogs, sheep, donkeys, birds, and other animals, but Scripture does not say that He owned a pet.

So the honest answer is:

We do not know.

But here is something amazing: Jesus created dogs.

John 1.3 Col 1.16 says that everything was made through Him.

Jesus created every animal. He created their different sounds, colors, personalities, and abilities.

Jesus even taught lessons using animals. He spoke about sheep, birds, foxes, camels, fish, donkeys, snakes, and chicks.

So although we do not know whether Jesus had a dog, we do know that Jesus is the Creator and Lord of all creation.

Loving God With Our Minds

These questions may sound funny or simple, but thinking deeply about Jesus can bless us.

Jesus said that we should love God with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength.

When we think about who Jesus is, our minds begin to affect our hearts.

Knowing Jesus fills the soul.

Knowing Jesus lights our path.

Knowing Jesus leads to faithful service.

We do not just want to know facts about Jesus. We want to know Jesus Himself.

His many names show us His beauty.

He is the Savior when we are guilty.

He is the Light when we are confused.

He is the Shepherd when we are lost.

He is the Bread when our souls are empty.

He is the Resurrection when we are afraid of death.

He is the Way when we do not know where to go.

He is Immanuel—God with us.

So perhaps the most important question is not:

“What was Jesus’ middle name?”

The most important question is:

Do you know His name, trust who He is, and belong to Him?
