Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
III. Principles of the doctrine of Christ (vs 1)
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment.
Six Doctrines
1. Repentance from dead works
2. Faith toward God
3. Baptisms
4. Laying on of hands
5. Resurrection of the dead
6. Eternal judgment
IV. Repentance from Dead Works
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
A. Dead works are not only sinful things.
B. Dead works can also be religious things we trust instead of Jesus.
a. You can pray to know God, or you can pray to impress God.
b. You can serve because you love God, or you can serve because you are trying to make God love you.
c. You can give from gratitude, or you can give because you think God owes you something.
C. A dead work says:
a. “I have to earn God’s acceptance.”
D. Grace says:
a. Jesus has already made the way for me to be accepted.
b. Repentance means I stop trusting what I do and start trusting what Christ has done.
V. Faith Toward God
Therefore leaving the principles of the doctrine of Christ, let us go on unto perfection; not laying again the foundation of repentance from dead works, and of faith toward God,
A. Repentance is turning from something.
B. Faith is turning toward Someone.
C. Faith is not just believing God exists.
D. The people who received Hebrews already believed God existed.
E. Their struggle was trusting God completely.
F. Faith says:
a. God, I trust Your Word more than my feelings.
b. I trust Your grace more than my guilt.
c. I trust Jesus’ sacrifice more than my failure.
