Back In Acts

This morning we are back in the book of Acts. You may remember we left Paul and his group in the city of Corinth. As you remember, it was during his approximately 18 month stay in Corinth that he wrote 1 and 2 Thessalonians.
Today we return to . If you have your Bibles, I want to encourage you to turn with me to and we’ll begin reading with verse 18. .
Acts 18:18 NIV84
18 Paul stayed on in Corinth for some time. Then he left the brothers and sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila. Before he sailed, he had his hair cut off at Cenchrea because of a vow he had taken.

Paul’s Travels

Paul left the brothers and sisters in Corinth and sailed for Syria.

He was accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila.

Timothy & Silas most likely remained in Achaia

He left from Cenchrea.

(Sin’ shrea)
Pronounced “Sin’ shera” which was Corinth’s southeastern port.

Before Paul left, he cut his hair off because of a vow he had taken.

While we don’t know when the vow was made, it is scholars surmise that it was probably made a year and a half before. It is highly suspected that Paul took a Nazarite vow. During the vow, Paul would have allowed his hair to grow out. Now since the vow was over before he left Cenchrea he had his hair cut.
Acts 18:19–22 NIV84
19 They arrived at Ephesus, where Paul left Priscilla and Aquila. He himself went into the synagogue and reasoned with the Jews. 20 When they asked him to spend more time with them, he declined. 21 But as he left, he promised, “I will come back if it is God’s will.” Then he set sail from Ephesus. 22 When he landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church and then went down to Antioch.
Acts 18:19-

They went to Ephesus

Where Paul left Priscilla & Aquila

Paul went to the synagogue to reason with the Jews.

The Jews wanted Paul to stay longer, but he said he would come back at a later time.

Paul goes on to Caesarea and greets the church.

Then Paul goes down to Antioch—where he started!

Acts 18:

After a short visit—Paul strengthens the disciples throughout Galatia and Phrygia.

Acts 18:23 NIV84
23 After spending some time in Antioch, Paul set out from there and traveled from place to place throughout the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.

After a short visit—Paul strengthens the disciples throughout Galatia and Phrygia.

Meet Apollos of Alexandria.

Acts 18:24–26 NIV84
24 Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures. 25 He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 He began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they invited him to their home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.
Acts 18:24-

Apollos was a Jew

Apollos was a Jew

Apollos had a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures.

Had been accurately taught about Jesus.

But his teaching only went as far as the baptism of John.

He spoke boldly in the synagogue.

In Ephesus Apollos meets Priscilla & Aquila.

Priscilla & Aquila take him home and explained to him the way of God more adequately.

Apollos wanted to go to Achaia

Acts 18:27–28 NIV84
27 When Apollos wanted to go to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. On arriving, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed. 28 For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.

The brothers & sisters encouraged him to go.

They wrote letters of introduction for him.

Arriving at Achaia he became a great help.

Vigorously refuted the Jews in public debate.

He was able to prove from the Scriptures that Jesus was the Messiah.

SO WHAT?

So What Does This Mean To Me?

Paul’s focus was on sharing the Gospel. We need to focus on sharing the Gospel.

We need to encourage other believers around us!

Like Apollos—we need to have a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures!

Share what you know to the best of your ability!

We need to help others grow in their knowledge & understanding.
