Those who had arrested Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had convened. Meanwhile, Peter was following Him at a distance right to the high priest’s courtyard. He went in and was sitting with the temple police to see the outcome.

But Jesus kept silent. Then the high priest said to Him, “By the living God I place You under oath: tell us if You are the Messiah, the Son of God!”
He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of suffering who knew what sickness was.
He was like someone people turned away from;
He was despised, and we didn’t value Him.
Yet He Himself bore our sicknesses,
and He carried our pains;
but we in turn regarded Him stricken,
struck down by God, and afflicted.
But He was pierced because of our transgressions,
crushed because of our iniquities;
punishment for our peace was on Him,
and we are healed by His wounds.
We all went astray like sheep;
we all have turned to our own way;
and the Lord has punished Him
for the iniquity of us all.
He was oppressed and afflicted,
yet He did not open His mouth.
Like a lamb led to the slaughter
and like a sheep silent before her shearers,
He did not open His mouth.

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for false testimony against Jesus so they could put Him to death. But they could not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward. Finally, two who came forward stated, “This man said, ‘I can demolish God’s sanctuary and rebuild it in three days.’ ”
The high priest then stood up and said to Him, “Don’t You have an answer to what these men are testifying against You?”

The religious leaders were convinced that Jesus was not the Messiah prophesied of old but He was fulfilling prophecy right in their midst! In the end Jesus would fulfill over 300 OT prophecies concerning the coming Messiah.
Jewish people today will tell you that they reject Jesus as their Messiah because their forefathers did. However, according to , the pre-requisite for being the Messiah was to be rejected by His own people.
2. The oath of the High Priest
But Jesus kept silent. Then the high priest said to Him, “By the living God I place You under oath: tell us if You are the Messiah, the Son of God!”

The High Priest, like all Jewish people, were forbidden by the OT Law from using the name of God in an oath.
He invoked the name of “the living God” not knowing that the Living God was standing 3 feet away from him.

3. The response of Jesus
“You have said it,” Jesus told him. “But I tell you, in the future you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of the Power and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Response? Blasphemy! The religious leaders were not looking for the Messiah…they were looking to maintain their power, profit, and prestige.

Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard. A servant approached him and she said, “You were with Jesus the Galilean too.”
But he denied it in front of everyone: “I don’t know what you’re talking about!”

When he had gone out to the gateway, another woman saw him and told those who were there, “This man was with Jesus the Nazarene!”
And again he denied it with an oath, “I don’t know the man!”

Then he started to curse and to swear with an oath, “I do not know the man!” Immediately a rooster crowed,

Following Jesus at a distance Peter was unable to stand for Jesus, but as my wife Diane pointed out, Peter with Jesus took on the whole Sanhedrin in Acts 4!

After Jesus was raised from the dead He was on a mission to reveal Himself to the World....but first He had an appointment with the one who failed him so miserably and the others who had run away.... He needed to let them know He still loved them and that it was OK.
