· 5 viewsThe Psalms teach us how to bring our whole life before God. They give us language for praise, help, trust, thanksgiving, repentance, and mission. As a follow-up to More Than a Song, this series shifts from defining worship to practicing a life shaped by worship, prayer, Scripture, and the reign of God. The five books of Moses teach God’s people how to live; the five books of Psalms teach God’s people how to pray and praise.

Ephesians 2:20–22 (ESV)
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
Our church family is built by God, upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, and with Christ Jesus as the cornerstone.
We are joined together by union with Christ, we are growing, we are a dwelling place of God by his Spirit, and we are missionaries.
After greeting prayer: “Lord, open our eyes this week to those who are curious about faith.”

“At this time, all checked-in kids are invited to head to Kids Ministry. Thank you for starting the morning with our SVC family. As you go, remember that God is building you into missionaries too, and He has a purpose for your life. Parents, if your child has been checked in, you may dismiss them to Kids Ministry now. Have a great morning, Kids!”

THE TENSION
THE TENSION
(Why This Matters - Name the struggle)
Everyone is spending something every day. Time.
You can earn more money. You can replace possessions. You can recover from failure.
But once a day is gone… it never comes back.
Moses doesn't pray, "Give us more days."
He prays, "Teach us to number our days."
The Psalms teach us that wisdom begins when we recognize life is a gift to steward, not merely a schedule to survive.
Big Idea: True wisdom is learning to see life from God's perspective and ordering our lives around what will matter for eternity.

THE SCRIPTURE
THE SCRIPTURE
(Context, Characters, Read)
Psalm 90:12 “12 So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”
THE DISCOVERY
THE DISCOVERY
(What We See Unfolding — 3 Movements: What does this reveal about God? - What does this reveal about us? - What lie is being confronted?)
1. Wisdom Begins with an Eternal Perspective
1. Wisdom Begins with an Eternal Perspective
Psalm 90:1–6 “1 Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. 3 You return man to dust and say, “Return, O children of man!” 4 For a thousand years in your sight are but as yesterday when it is past, or as a watch in the night. 5 You sweep them away as with a flood; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning: 6 in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers.”
Moses contrasts God's eternity with our brevity.
Num 20 Death of Miriam and Aaron, after Moses, only Joshua and Caleb remain.
God is everlasting. We are temporary.
The problem isn't that life is short. The problem is that we often live as though it isn't.
Wisdom begins by seeing life from God's perspective.
Temporary things should never become ultimate things.
Our calendars reveal what our hearts value.
James 4:13–15, Colossians 3:1–4, Psalm 39:4–5
Ask yourself: If I knew my days were numbered...what would I change?
Main Point: Wise people don't just count their days, they make their days count for God's Kingdom.
2. Wisdom Is Learning God's Ways
2. Wisdom Is Learning God's Ways
Psalm 90:12 “12 So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.”
Notice Moses' prayer: "Teach us..."
Wisdom isn't instinctive. It is learned.
The Psalms consistently connect wisdom with walking in God's truth.
Psalm 1 begins with someone delighting in God's Word.
Psalm 119 celebrates God's instruction.
Wisdom is more than knowledge.
Knowledge tells us what is right.
Wisdom helps us live what is right.
Disciples are lifelong learners.
Psalm 1:1–3, Psalm 119:105, Proverbs 3:5–6, James 1:22–25
Ask: Am I becoming more informed...or more transformed?
Main Point: Discipleship is learning to live God's truth, not merely knowing it.
3. Worship Shapes Wise Living
3. Worship Shapes Wise Living
Psalm 90:13–17 “13 Return, O Lord! How long? Have pity on your servants! 14 Satisfy us in the morning with your steadfast love, that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. 15 Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, and for as many years as we have seen evil. 16 Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. 17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!”
Moses finishes by asking God to satisfy His people with His steadfast love. Why? Because worship changes what we love. And what we love determines how we live.
The Psalms continually connect:
God's presence...
God's Word...
God's wisdom.
Worship is not an escape from life. It prepares us to live wisely within it.
We become what we behold.
The more we delight in God...the more wisely we live.
Romans 12:1–2, Colossians 3:16–17, Psalm 27:4
What is shaping your thinking more? The Word? Or the world?
Main Point: What captures your heart will eventually direct your life.
4. Leave a Legacy That Lasts
4. Leave a Legacy That Lasts
Psalm 90:16–17 “16 Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. 17 Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands upon us; yes, establish the work of our hands!”
Moses prays: "Establish the work of our hands."
He isn't praying for success. He's praying for significance.
Our culture asks: "What will make me successful?"
Scripture asks: "What will outlive me?"
The wisest life is one invested in things that last forever.
Jesus. People. His Kingdom.
Matthew 6:19–21, 1 Corinthians 15:58, Ephesians 2:10
Imagine your funeral. What do you hope people will remember?
Better yet...What do you hope God will say?
Main Point: A life surrendered to God leaves a legacy that outlives a lifetime.
IDENTITY SHIFT
IDENTITY SHIFT
(Who does this reveal God to be? Who does this reveal us to be?)
Wisdom transforms our identity from people drifting through life to disciples intentionally following Jesus, investing every day in what matters for eternity.
PRACTICE OBEDIENCE
PRACTICE OBEDIENCE
(Next Steps - Application)
Every morning this week, before checking your phone or your calendar, pray Psalm 90:12: “Lord, teach me to number my days so that I may gain a heart of wisdom."
Then ask one simple question: "What is the wisest way I can follow Jesus today?"
CONCLUSION:
Moses reminds us: Life is short. God is eternal.
Wisdom is choosing today what will matter forever.
The Psalms don't simply teach us how to worship on Sunday.
They teach us how to live on Monday.
Discipleship is worship lived out in everyday decisions.
