Luke 5:1 NIV

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret, the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.

Lake Gennesaret is another name for the Sea of Galilee.

What were the people doing as they crowded around Jesus?

They were longing to hear the Word of the Lord.

They wanted to hear the truth.

This longing to hear reveals a marker of discipleship.

A marker of discipleship is a longing to hear the Word of the Lord.

How is this longing met?

Spending time with Jesus.

A disciple should have a drive to hear, to study and allow the Word of the Lord to direct their steps.

Luke 5:2–3 NIV

He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.

Jesus saw the great need of the people and He took advantage of the resources made available

He called upon those around Him for help

recognizing our need for fellowship

We cannot do it alone we need Jesus we need His word and we need each other.

Luke 5:4–5 NASB95

When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.” Simon answered and said, “Master, we worked hard all night and caught nothing, but I will do as You say and let down the nets.”
