Gospel has Imperatives

(slide) Imperative (adj) Of vital importance; crucial, giving an authoritative command; peremptory.
(Slide) Imperative (noun) an essential or urgent
The gospel has glad tidings (Lk2:10) about the salvation that Jesus brought. It is the thing that we must believe
(Slide) The Gospel we have looked at before we looked at the imperatives of what we must believe, but tonight we are going to look at the imperatives of what we must do (in other words obey)
The Gospel we have looked at before we looked at the imperatives of what we must believe, but (Slide) tonight we are going to look at the imperatives of what we must do (in other words obey)
(slide) When you think of obey, what do you think of? What does it mean to you?
(Slide) Obey (v) Comply with the command, direction, or request of (a person or law); submit to authority of ; to carry out a command
So let’s look tonight at the imperatives, the musts, that we need to obey .

We Must Believe (Introduction)

We must believe:
Jesus died for our sins; was buried and rose again ()
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 NASB95
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,
(Slide) That Jesus is both Lord and King ()
(Slide) That Jesus is coming again to judge the world (, (Slide) 17:30-31)
Acts 10:42 NASB95
42 “And He ordered us to preach to the people, and solemnly to testify that this is the One who has been appointed by God as Judge of the living and the dead.
We must obey
(Slide) Eternal salvation rests only on those who obey the Gospel (Slide) ()
Hebrews 5:9 NASB95
9 And having been made perfect, He became to all those who obey Him the source of eternal salvation,
(Slide) It is an obedience of faith (Rom1:5)
It comes from the heart (Slide) ( )
Romans 6:17 NASB95
17 But thanks be to God that though you were slaves of sin, you became obedient from the heart to that form of teaching to which you were committed,
(Slide) Then on the other hand, those who do not obey have eternal destruction awaiting (Slide) ()
n the other hand, those who do not obey have eternal destruction awaiting (Slide) ()
2 Thessalonians 1:7–9 NASB95
7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,
2 Thessalonians 1:7–9 NASB95
7 and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power,
So, do you have enough scripture yet or did I just wet your appetite? That is all introduction stuff, now what are the commands to obey?

I. We Must Believe

A. (Slide) We must believe the Gospel
(Slide) It’s the Gospel that Jesus wants “all” to hear - Mk16:15-16
(Slide) It’s the Gospel that is the power to save those who believe - (Slide)
Romans 1:16–17 NASB95
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.”
B. (Slide) We must believe in Jesus
(Slide) We must believe He lived, and died for our sins and be willing to put our trust in Him (; )
(Slide) If not, we will die in our sins! ()
(Slide)
John 1:29 NASB95
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
(Slide)
John 8:24 NASB95
24 “Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.”
(Transition) Each part of the Gospel is important, one part without the other does not equate to assured salvation. Our obedience requires acknowledging our faith.

II. We Must Confess

A. (Slide) Confess Jesus as Lord
(Slide) To confess is to acknowledge something as true, and we are told we must confess with our mouth (Rom10:9-10)
(Slide) To confess Jesus as lord is a must and necessary for our salvation (Slide) ()
Matthew 10:32–33 NASB95
32 “Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men, I will also confess him before My Father who is in heaven. 33 “But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny him before My Father who is in heaven.
B. (slide) Make a good confession
(Slide) Confessing Jesus before others is the example that is set before us (1Tim6:12-13)
(Slide) A great example of such is the Eunch ()
Acts 8:37 NASB95
37 And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” And he answered and said, “I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.”
(Transition) - a good confession, a public confession coupled with your obedient faith in Christ Jesus and we are ready to press on.

III. We Must Repent

A. (Slide) We are commanded
(Slide) Jesus wanted it, repentance preached to (Lk24:46-47)
(Slide) His Apostles were faithful to carry it out. (Act2:38, 3:19, 17:30)
(Slide)
Acts 17:30 NASB95
30 “Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent,
B. (Slide) Repent
(Slide) “to change a mind, to make a decision”
(Slide) For the seeker, it is to change direction from sin to God through Christ.
(Slide) It is going from worldly sorrow to Godly sorrow leading to salvation (Slide) ()
2 Corinthians 7:9–11 NASB95
9 I now rejoice, not that you were made sorrowful, but that you were made sorrowful to the point of repentance; for you were made sorrowful according to the will of God, so that you might not suffer loss in anything through us. 10 For the sorrow that is according to the will of God produces a repentance without regret, leading to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death. 11 For behold what earnestness this very thing, this godly sorrow, has produced in you: what vindication of yourselves, what indignation, what fear, what longing, what zeal, what avenging of wrong! In everything you demonstrated yourselves to be innocent in the matter.
(Transition) so you have faith, confession, and you have been convicted and have repented so now obedience continues

IV. You Must Be Baptized

A. (Slide) Immersion in Water and Spirit
(Slide) Without a doubt it is an integral part of the Gospel according to Jesus own words (Mt28:19;20; Mk16:15-16)
(Slide) It is for convicted, repenting, confessing, believers (Act2:37-38, 8:36-37)
(Slide) It is immersion in water (Act8:36-37) - baptizo = immersion
(Slide) If that were not enough there is more
(Slide) It involved the Holy Spirit (Tit3:5; 1Cor12:13)
(Slide) So there you have both water (immersion) and spirit (Holy Spirit) (Jn3:5)
B. (Slide) It is for the remission of sins as scripture says
Made possible by the blood of Christ (Slide) ()
Ephesians 1:7 NASB95
7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
(Slide) We are buried in baptism with Christ into His death (Rom6:3-4)
(Slide) Through God’s working we are raised up and our sins forgiven (Col2:12-13)
(Slide) Baptism is done for the remission of sins (eis to onima = into possession of) ()
(Slide) This is where our sins are washed away (Slide) ()
Acts 22:16 NASB95
16 ‘Now why do you delay? Get up and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on His name.’
(Transition) so the believer, who has heard the gospel, believed the gospel, obeyed the gospel by their confession, repentance and baptism was raised for a purpose, to walk in the newness of life according to Rom6:4
V. We Must Remain Faithful
A. (Slide) Baptism is only the beginning
(Slide) Jesus wants to learn to follow His commands (Mt28:19-20)
(Slide) Be faithful so to receive the crown of life - (Rev2:10 - so heed the warning (Slide)
Revelation 2:10 NASB95
10 ‘Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
Revelation 2:10 NASB95
10 ‘Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.
Walking in the newness of life is walking with the body, and it is vital -(Slide) (use it or lose it!) There is a danger of apostasy
Hebrews 10:24–25 NASB95
24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
B. (Slide) Possibility / Danger of apostasy
(Slide) If it were not possible, why have scripture warnings concerning it?
(Slide) If sin could not creep back in and harden a heart, why say you need to be steadfast?
If sin could not creep back in and harden heart
- on apostasy
Hebrews 10:24–25 NASB95
24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
Hebrews 10:24–25 NASB95
24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.
- on being steadfast
2 Peter 3:17 NASB95
17 You therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, be on your guard so that you are not carried away by the error of unprincipled men and fall from your own steadfastness,
Closing / Invitation - Any Gospel that does not have all the God commands through the Bible is man made. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is pure and simple
