Summer...great risk— a slow gradual drift away from what keeps us anchored for life

Life is full of underlying currents — competing for our time, attention, our schedules...just as a boat not securely anchored will unknowingly drift...so will every beleiver from the faith that holds them fast.

Last week, The Danger of the Drift — ending up where you never intended to be.

"The greatest danger isn't running from Jesus—it's slowly drifting away from Him."

AVOID THE DRIFT—ANCHOR TO THE SON

The author of Hebrews is writing to a community under immense pressure from the world around them. They are tired, tempted to compromise their beliefs; slowly unknowingly distancing themselves—from what they first believed. The writer (preachers words are an urgent warning to stay steadfast in their conviction, to when we first heard the good news of Jesus. Its message is timeless for us still today.

(NLT) 14 “For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ.”

What was that moment like for you? When you found Jesus, and chose to follow him. Is the fire of that conviction still holding you today? Or are you dragging anchor, drifting further and further from where you were?

Big Idea: HOLDING FIRM ‘TODAY’, KEEPS US ANCHORED FOR TOMORROW

PRAYER/BIBLES

(S3) — {3:5}

Before they came to follow Jesus, they were totally dependent on hearing God’s voice through the Prophets. The writer acknowledges Moses as most faithful in all God’s house—“the whole “family” of Israel, and their pace in it.

HEBREWS CH. 11 — HALL OF FAITH

But now that they are part of a new family (household), their faith is to be anchored in the one who is over Gods’ house.

(S4) — {3:6}

Through Jesus who was faithful to the end…they would find the courage to withstand the currents that were pulling them away from when they first believed—he is telling them that their hope is now SECURE IN CHRIST

Horatio Spafford lost nearly everything. First, the Great Chicago Fire destroyed much of his wealth. Then, while his family sailed to Europe, the ship collided with another vessel. His four daughters drowned. As Spafford crossed the Atlantic to the place where they had perished, he wrote these words:

"When peace like a river attendeth my way... It is well... it is well with my soul."

How could he write that? His confidence wasn't anchored in his circumstances. It was anchored in Christ. Even when everything around him was sinking, his soul remained secure.

Confidence comes from knowing that no matter how hard life rocks us, Hope in Jesus is the anchor that holds us secure.

Hebrews 6:19 “This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls.

What is your hope anchored to? Job, Health, Money, your own abilities…?

(S5) — Point 1. ANCHORED TO ANYTHING OTHER THAN JESUS IS SHIFTING SAND

That's why experienced boaters pay as much attention to the lake bottom as they do to the anchor itself. Sand, weeds, or loose mud can let an anchor drag. But when it bites into solid ground, the boat can ride out wind and waves.

(S6) — {3:7a}

Like a good preacher the writer presents two very profound theological statements

First, he wants them to know that his words are the very word of God—Holy Spirit

As pastor/preachers we are tasked to bring God’s word. Listening, we hear what is being said…but most importantly, are we hearing what God is saying?

Ever listen to a good speaker and cling to every word? How much more should we cling to every word spoken by God?

They were to not just hear his words, but to hear the voice of God. .

Second, not only was the God speaking, but speaking today—Note the present tense: says, not said. Also that the word TODAY appears not only here but also in verses 13 and 15. The writer is referencing both the day when they first heard the good news of Jesus…and to today what they are hearing in that moment.

Wesley believed that the Bible is not a museum artifact to be admired—it is the living Word of God to be heard, trusted, and obeyed. 2 Timothy 3:16–17 “All Scripture is inspired by God…

He is saying that “Every day is someone's "today." The Spirit is still speaking through this ancient text today…

Recall when you first heard the word of God; said yes to Jesus. That was your today and becuase the word is living…today is still your day.

it mattered when you first heard his voice, it matters even more that you hear his voice today..."Hear" — positive: listen, incline your ear, pay attention

(S7) — Point 2. GOD IS SPEAKING TODAY — AND THE VOICE YOU IGNORE IS THE ANCHOR YOU LOSE.

"Today" is not a date on a calendar; it is the urgent, present moment of hearing and responding. We hold firm by hearing the voice of God, ‘TODAY’

(S8) — {3:8}

So they would listen, the preacher gives warning, quoting from  {Psalm 95:7-11} a passage they would have known by heart—a synagogue hymn sung every Sabbath in Jewish worship.

Verses 8-11, draw from pivotal moments in Israel’s wilderness experience.

They had every advantage. They saw the Red Sea part, ate manna daily, drank water from the rock, were being led to the promised land, and yet still hardened their hearts.

"Harden" (σκληρύνω, sklērynō, G4645) — means to make stubborn or calloused. It suggests a process.

How a loaf of bread hardens when exposed to the elements

They were not lacking evidence of God's faithfulness...they were lacking the will to hold on

No one wakes up one morning suddenly hard toward God. It happens gradually, through repeated small choices to ignore, resist, or drift. The anchor doesn't slip all at once. It frays, strand by strand until it no longer holds.

(S9) — Point 3. AN ANCHOR THAT ISN’T SET DOESN’T HOLD

You can be in the right boat, in the right storm, with the right anchor — and still shift if you never drop it where it can hold fast.

Holding firm to when we first believed, is not just a one-time decision, but a daily discipline of a life anchored in Christ.

Wesley, the founder of Methodism, believed that God conveys grace through specific channels, He organized his life around the practices of prayer, searching the Scriptures, participating in the Lord’s Supper (Eucharist), fasting, and Christian conferencing (small groups), believing that by them a person can be made aware of God’s pardoning and empowering presence and go on to maturity in Christ.

SAVED BY GRACE. SAVED BY FAITH

“A hardened heart is closed to God's truth. Instead of responding in faith, it turns away, excuses sin, resists conviction, and continually tests God's patience rather than trusting His grace.”

They were to hold form by learning from the past—that an anchor that isn’t set doesn’t hold!

(S10) — {12-13}

Notice the order, first we are to put on our own oxygen mask...consider our own heart and where it is hardened

Matthew 7:5 “First get rid of the log in your own eye; then you will see well enough to deal with the speck in your friend’s eye.”

Unconfessed sin leads leads to a hard hearts—but confession brings not only pardon, but healing and wholeness.

1 John 1:9 “But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.”

They were to not only watch over themselves…but over each other.

Wesley instructed members of his “bands”—small groups devoted to mutual accountability for Christian discipleship. They were to embody the practice of ‘watching over one another in love’

James 5:16 “Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”

(S11) — Point 4. CONFESSION RENEWS A HEART SOFT HEART TOWADS GOD

Ezekiel 11:19 “And I will give them singleness of heart and put a new spirit within them. I will take away their stony, stubborn heart and give them a tender, responsive heart,”

SOFT BREAD - A heart softened is ready to not only hear the voice of God, but ready to respond…

Imagine trying to plant a garden in the middle of a drought. The ground has become hard as concrete. You can scatter all the seed you want, but it simply bounces off the surface. Before anything can grow, the soil must first be softened.

Our hearts are much the same way. Confession is like the gentle rain that softens hardened ground. It breaks up the soil so the seed of God's Word can sink deep into our lives. Once the heart is softened, growth begins naturally.

God's grace not only pardons sin but also renews the heart so its soft towards God

Psalm 51:10 “Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a loyal spirit within me.”

Then comes our anchor passage...

(S12) — {3:14}

14 “For if we are faithful to the end, trusting God just as firmly as when we first believed, we will share in all that belongs to Christ.”

When we hold fast to the grace we first recieved, when we trust in God just as we did then, we share in God’s blessings—partner with Jesus

This is not a distant, contractual relationship — it's intimate communion. As a follower of Jesus, you are part of God’s house, not just related to Christ — you are participating in His life, His suffering, and His glory.

1 Corinthians 1:9 “for he is faithful to do what he says, and he has invited you into partnership with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”

(S13) —

Point 5. Belonging to Christ means: we share in His salvation. His righteousness. His inheritance. His mission. and we share in His future glory.

Holding firm to the end is no longer defined by our past, our failures, or the world around us. You belong to Him.

Galatians 2:20 “My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Said another way, Belonging Is Proven by Perseverance—Hebrews does not say we earn our place in Christ by enduring. Instead, perseverance demonstrates the reality of our relationship.

Just as a healthy tree continues to bear fruit because it is alive, a genuine relationship with Christ continues in faith because Christ sustains His people.

The author is encouraging believers not to drift or fall away but to continue trusting Christ.

(S14) — Holding Firm...

Start the habit of daily listening. Begin each day asking, "Lord, what are You saying to me?" Every day is today. Is there a "voice" from God that you've been ignoring or putting off responding to? What would it look like to respond today?

2. What does it look like set your anchor? Examine your own heart for signs of hardening. Find one person who can ask you the hard questions. Don't wait until you're struggling. Build the relationship now.

3. Create a culture of honest encouragement. How can we watch over one another in love?

4. Recall the "beginning of your confidence" The moment you first believed or the season when your faith was most alive? How does remembering help you hold firm today so you can be anchored for tomorrow?

The challenge is to fan into flame the faith you first received—HOLDING FIRM TO JESUS TODAY, KEEPS US ANCHORED FOR TOMORROW
