Flavor Your Words

Big Idea: Our words can be be flavored grace to satisfy the hunger in someone’s soul.

Hunger

– "You're Not You When You're Hungry." Snickers

One of the most successful hunger-based campaigns, suggesting that hunger changes a person's behavior until they're satisfied.

– "A Mars a Day Helps You Work, Rest and Play." Mars

A classic slogan (1930s–1970s) connecting food with energy.

– "The Breakfast of Champions." Wheaties

Appeals to satisfying hunger while fueling success.

– "Eat Fresh." Subway

Focuses on satisfying hunger with fresh ingredients.

– "Have It Your Way." Burger King

Emphasizes satisfying individual cravings.

– "I'm Lovin' It." or “Bic Mac Attack” McDonald's

While broader than hunger, the slogan is consistently associated with satisfying cravings.

– "Finger Lickin' Good." KFC

Suggests irresistible food that satisfies hunger.

– "Pizza! Pizza!" Little Caesars

A memorable call to satisfy hunger with value.

– "Where's the Beef?" Wendy's

Highlights a desire for a more satisfying meal.

– "Feed Your Happy." Hardee's/Carl's Jr.

Connects satisfying hunger with happiness.

Speaks to the satisfaction of hunger and comfort.

Our Words Hold the Power of Life and Death

Our Words Reveal Our Hearts

Jesus teaches that speech is evidence of what fills the heart.

Words are the overflow of one's inner character.

Your Life will Follow Your Words

If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. 3 Indeed, we put bits in horses’ mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. 4 Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the pilot desires. 5 Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things. See how great a forest a little fire kindles! 6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.

James compares the tongue to:

A horse's bit

A ship's rudder

A spark that starts a forest fire

Though small, it has enormous influence.

Our Words Can Bless or Curse

6 And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity. The tongue is so set among our members that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. 7 For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and creature of the sea, is tamed and has been tamed by mankind. 8 But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. 10 Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.

The Tongue Can Direct an Entire Life
