(Matt. 6:1-4) On His Majesty's Secret Service

Oh, that's so good to hear. And only a holy God.

Would be one that we would have to be reconciled to an our sinfulness and only a holy God would take those steps to create a way for a personal relationship with him. Amen, amen. Well, you can be turning in your Bibles to Matthew chapter 6, this morning, Matthew chapter 6, we're into our second chapter of The Sermon on the Mount.

36in verse 1 through 4 is what I read in a moment. You know that Jesus has been teaching in chapter 5. He's inviting us into blessing. And then, is challenging what we've heard that it was said about his word and then he makes explicitly clear, but he says with authority. He doesn't teach like the scribes but as one with authority. So we've been learning what we should know in chapter 5. I suppose it's about time, we learn what should we do and how we we should do it in chapter six, sowing 16:1. I'll read these four verses as you follow along. Listen what Jesus says. He says, beware.

Of practicing your righteousness. before other people in order to be seen by them, But then you will have no reward from your father who is in heaven. Thus when you give to the needy sound, no trumpet before you as the Hypocrites, do in the synagogues and in the streets, but they may be praised by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. so that you're giving may be in secret and your father who sees in secret will reward you,

Amen. Well, I have an interesting question for you, even as you're reflecting on those verses. If you'll stay with me, it'll make sense to you. But do you have a favorite James Bond actor.

Do you have a favorite one? You know what? The first one was Sean Connery. Anybody favorite Shawn kept as my favorite. What about Rodger Moore? Hey Rodger, Moore came along kind of reinvented the role. What about Timothy Dalton, couple movies of people are not fair fan of December, the Dalton Pierce, Brosnan came. Next. Daniel, Craig been James Bond for quite some time. Now, am I missing any You may know of any I'm missing. What about David Niven? I heard he played, I'm not familiar. Pretty played it, but there's a name I bet you don't know. I bet even if you are thinking, I think there's one more but I have no idea what his name is. There is a George Lazenby George Lazenby who played James Bond. And he played him in the movie. On Her Majesty's, Secret Service.

I say he's the most successful James Bond that ever lived. You know, why? You don't remember his name and its Secret Service.

1969, 7 years in on the franchise on Her Majesty's. Secret Service. Lazenby, did you know? This just retired in 2024. You still didn't know that. Did she retired from acting only two years ago? And we're kind of on the wear of it. Almost his career was a secret. All the success of a secret service hinges on keeping certain things, secret. Doesn't it? how fascinating to look at a passage this morning in Matthew 6, verses 1 through 4 And look at a portion of scripture on secrecy today. In the context of what we started, our service in proclaiming Jesus Christ, secrecy and proclaiming. How do you fit those things together? How fascinating, how frustrating must it be if we could use and use that word for the Lord? Jesus Christ to look upon those whom he has made a personal relationship with and see them. Get it backwards. It seems like as many times as not keeping him a secret and making themselves known somehow. We're prone to do so we have to admit that many times we get this balance backwards today. I want to share message will title it on his Majesty's, Secret Service from this chapter in these verses. And I want to share with you if you're interested in knowing how to get that balance right? Every time there's some say every day of the week and twice on Sunday, I love that get this balance right making Jesus known and making myself less known. Then I want to share with you three secrets and there is secret Avenue to receiving a reward. A reward from the Lord 3 secrets with you this morning, my purpose in preaching, these versus is so that you would set your heart on a reward, but such a reward, not the childish, things that we set our hearts on in this life because we're just like a child and we don't know how to exercise delayed gratification, but set your hearts on something that will last. And last forever into eternity, three secrets for this morning, let's pray. As we begin to look at these versus God. We just pray for your help and for your Condescension. Come down meet here with us. Walk with us through these verses speak to us. Jesus, we know your voice. You know, our names call us by name and bring us into Conformity with your Will Do it For Your Glory, do it, so that we can strike this balance in our life and make, you know, when we pray in Jesus name. Amen. Thank you. Lord, for hearing our prayer. Number one, the first Secret. To reward is simply this be where your desire to be seen first one again, says what beware. That is an interesting Lee and dramatically different word than Bo. Where isn't it? When you here, beware the Hair on the back of your neck. Should stand up compare this to the way chapter 5 Star. Did you remember chapter 5? What was the key word in in Versa? Come along right there and verse 3 was it verse 3?

Blessed. Where's three blessed verse for blessed verse 5, bless its on. And on through those Beatitudes, chapter 5 starts with a blessing. Chapter 6 starts with a warning, beware. Your translations might say take he'd be careful. I like this one. Watch out. Watch out. The Greek toward in the word has a prefix toward and Echo. Hold something.

Hold your mind in your attention toward this morning. Jesus says You've seen the sign Beware of dog.

There's no sign. Needed was some dogs, are there. You can see them bearing their teeth, you can hear, they're growling you know to be where that's what Jesus is getting across here he wants you to beware of something. What is it? He says beware. The 6:1. Beware, dear, Christian of practicing your righteousness. Hold on, beware of doing the right thing. Beware of practicing your righteousness, a very general statement, whatever follows. And actually, they'll be three things in this chapter, they'll be giving they'll be praying and fasting. Those forms of righteousness in practice beware of them. Beware of practicing your righteousness, was it say before other people.

In order to be seen by them. And here's the teeth of the warning for then you will have no reward.

Commentators. It's as if every commentator I read. Push their chair back from their desk at that point. But they're pinned down. And just trembled. In a chilling silence. No reward For the good that you pour out in your life. No reward. What's Jesus speaking about what he's not talking about. The glory that belongs to God, is he look at verse 16 of chapter 5

Let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your father who is in heaven. That's not the reward. It's not. The glory that God deserves, but it is look at verse 19. It is. something that Jesus calls greatness. It says in verse 19 of chapter 5. Therefore, whoever relaxes one of the least of these Commandments teaches others to do the same will be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven, but whoever does them teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven. There is a kingdom and rewards it identifies with greatness. It mentioned the first time in verse 12, chapter 5, rejoice and be glad for your what reward is great in heaven. Talking about persecution. Last time it appears in chapter 5 is at the very end. And verse 46 doesn't verse 46. If you love those who love you, what reward do you have reward is pervasive chapter 6. Now in verse one is stated negatively you won't have reward is stated positively in in verse 4, verse 4. Your father, who sees in secret will reward you for 6. When you pray, go into your room. Shut the door. So your father's season secret will reward You Verse 18 Again. The Lord seeing the father scene. And giving a reward. In regard to fasting.

3:2. Then says dust.

after hearing this warning, Identifying with the losing of reward, Jesus then says the US. I'm ready to give you examples, Jesus says, he says, in that way, having been warned, He says this, there's a interesting for you Scholars. A textual bearing. It, they call it. It means that some versions, The King James in particular, says, Not beware practicing your righteousness but beware of giving alms in such a way. Whether it's already specified that way or if that specificity doesn't come till birth, to either way, this practice of righteousness is Illustrated in verse 2. before in the giving of alms,

so the Jesus says, and Begins the first of three examples of practicing righteousness, In this first example, is to give to the needy literally. It says, in the Greek to do ohms to do, if you will compassion Compassion's.

True compassion. Doing them. And knowing that it's more than writing a check, isn't it? It's more than just making a problem go away.

It's also giving of yourself your own time and your attention to one who is needy in that context. This example, Jesus says dust when you give to the needy Sound no trumpet before you actually. That phrase appears in the original language as a verb. He's literally says don't trump it, your actions don't play your actions like a trumpet to be noticed. He says sound no trumpet before you. and his example of those who do so are who The hypocrites. Hypocrites. A transliteration actually, you hear the word hypocrite if you read the Greek, literally means an actor but not just any actor. Not the actors like George Lazenby that we see with maybe a little makeup, but you see their face, the old Greek actors would wear a mask, a literal mask over their face, to play their part. They're acting under an assumed identity. This is not to use our James Bond illustration. This is not James Bond, taking an inconspicuous role. So as to be unseen, this would be like James Bond's putting on the Garb of the queen herself and strutting around.

in Her Majesty's, Secret Service so called As an impostor, these Hypocrites, look at it verse 2. Where do they do this thing to it in the synagogues and in the streets? Well, give credit where credit is due, at least they're consistent. What more we can say for a lot of Christians, a brother of mine said, one day, you know, the thing that bothers me most about the church today is that there one person in here and once they go out the door there another person of the Hypocrites with the same person in the synagogue or in the streets. Says in verse 2. But they may be praised by others. What was their hope? Just to wring as much meaning out of this better for us we can James Bond. Have you seen the old posters? I remember these in the business world and in the military is about corporate Espionage and the posters would be put up and they're deep. I think somebody with a trench coat on and it says, if you see something say something seen those, you see something say something. It says the f, the hope of the hypocrite. Is that someone would see something and say something. That's their hope. In this life. Jesus says, beware your desire to be seen.

Beware of wrong motives. Beware of this motive is says in verse 22. Be seen even that word. It's not the same word as used of god scene later on. It's literally the word that's a word that sounds like theater. So that you'd be on the stage and be seen seemed silly once we pull back the curtain. It seems so silly and childish once you see it for what it is. Crying about no one paying attention to you. That's what Jesus is condemning.

You say yes but there are certain situations in my life where I need to be seen. What about a resume? What about the applying for a job? What about proving myself in the workplace? Or someone I need to be seen people need to see what I do. All fair enough for your resume, Jesus is talking about fan, club mail. That's what he's talkin about. Not a resume to be seen in that way, more explicitly to be praised to be seen. So as to be praised look again, at 5:16 Isn't this one of those tensions in scripture and when you see them appear in such close proximity, you know, that the sum of both parts is greater than just one plus one. Says in verse 16 of chapter 5, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works. course, the difference is Who is being praised?

And who are you receiving? Praise from.

In this hypocritical situation in the synagogues and in the streets, it is Pierce praising you to make you Superior to them. Okay, this is probably one of those motivations in life. The praise from others that because of the fall of humanity into a simple condition is hardwired into our brains into our very hard. That's probably true. It's probably why there's no more pervasive motivation in all the whole world. It's even in the animal kingdom did, you know? Dogs and cats off your dog person or cat person, but you know, they've done studies, both dogs and cats. You know what, they'd rather have than a nice big bowl of puppy chow or cat food, a little praise from their owner. What could possibly counter this animal Instinct and that's what it is. A childish, immature animal unredeemed Instinct and nothing more. What could counter at what's the right motive against all those wrong mode. If some of some of suggested very Adamantly. Here's the right motive. Never be seen or noticed. Or even desire to do anything for any reward is that would ruin your active service. In fact seek, no reward whatsoever. Do it because it's right. Help the needy. That's your motivation. You know what Jesus says that's not it. Oh, oh, right. You said it was to be seen by God. That's your motivation, right? That's good. But that's not exactly what Jesus says. What does he say? He says when you give to the needy verse 3,

Where's for?

So that your father will reward you.

You know what, the right motive is. Reward.

Do you know it's right to want to be rewarded as a Christian?

Sinclair Ferguson great eloquent preacher. If I could do a Scottish accent I would do it. Thank you, Scottish. Sinclair Ferguson says it this way. So actually Jesus. Great concern here though. It may strike us in a fresh way is that Christians should be well rewarded. You know who was more concerned about your reward than you are your lord. Jesus desires, that you're well rewarded. Look at scripture. What are some good examples of reward in the Bible? I know that someone's thinking of Romans 6:23 and they're saying okay there's wages. And then there's a gift. Where's reward fit in the wages of sin is death. But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ. Jesus, listen, are we really to go after a reward? Just begin there and realized with me that wages are not the same thing as reward. Reward is Grace multiplied for a menial task reward. Jesus wants you to be rewarded.

Apostle Paul says in Colossians, he will reward you whether good or bad Colossians 3 verse 23, says, whatever you do work hardly as for the Lord and not for men. Knowing that from the Lord, you will receive the inheritance. As your reward, you are serving the lord Christ. The wrongdoer will be paid back for the wrong, he has done, there's no partiality Either Belongs to the Lord or you don't. It's a reward. If I could possibly put a label on it, it would be a reward of relationship. Relationship itself. Look at Matthew in chapter 10. Just a couple pages over and verse 40. I think speaks to this every ward of relationship that's Cheese's desire for you. Matthew 10 and verse 40 and 41, whoever receives you received me, whoever receives me, receives him who sent me the one who receives a prophet Prophet because he's a prophet, will receive a prophet's reward for the one who received a righteous person because he's a righteous person will receive a righteous persons reward. It's a reward that flows from relationship a man I have a favorite way of speaking about reward and I don't know if it even scratches the tip of the iceberg with this. My favorite way about speaking about the, the work of obedience obedience to face that comes through a late relationship with Jesus Christ. Here it is, it is Jesus my obedience, you know, none of my obedience is perfect but Jesus is my righteousness time. I'm closed in his own perfect life. Jesus my righteousness but it doesn't stop there. Jesus, my reward. It's a reward of relationship. Problem is. Being seen by other people dope animalistically. Tempting is a promise that promise is far more than it delivers and it's in plain sight. It's like that old

Is it a proverb is in Parable? I don't know what you called The Emperor's New Clothes. You've heard that talked about it course, the info. Their Emperor had no clothes. He was in his underwear. It was just a put on. It was a shared lie about him and all those around him. That's what this phrase of people must be for us. It's it's like The Emperor's New Clothes. It's just to be seen by people. Is that what we're going after? Once you see it, you can't unsee it, can you?

unless, unless you see this, But the one whose status is so far, superior.

Is condescended. To look into your life. His majesty is the one who promises to see and reward you.

We have a constant audience. With the god of the universe, remember as a child be careful little eyes. What you see? Be careful hands, what you do little mouth what you say cuz the father of the Bob is looking down in love when I always thought that's kind of spooky and scary to me but now I understand you see nothing is lost on God. He sees it off, I'm constantly season. There is no shadow of turning. It never turns away.

The bad deer believer in Jesus. He sees through the blood of Christ paid for in full The good he sees bought for her bought by that very blood purchase. You're his his workmanship for good works. But he sees it.

There's a reward.

The probably my little saying, doesn't even capture.

Because scripture says it this way in 1st Corinthians 2:9, it's written what. No eye has seen nor ear heard nor the heart of man, imagine what God has prepared for those who love him. And God sees it all, and he's ready to reward all of it. That's not trumpeted in front of others for their praise.

You wear your desire to be seen it, where your desired to be seen verse 3, it goes on. Jesus says,

When? You.

Just stop there. And Realized with me.

30 in the Greek, this word you

Is so imprecise, we hit, we can't possibly see. It's a whole different word than a than a plural. You all its individual. You second person singular and it's forced to the front of the sentence. It's, it's not a tree but when it's you, however, I've described the Hypocrites, I've described your potential loss of reward. I'm more broken up about it than you are. But it says you however, in verse 3, notice it says you however, when not if This isn't a message on charitable giving really, is it? It's a message about pride in the heart and the desire to be seen. But there it is, it says win, just like it'll say when you praying, when you fast Christian, it says, when you give To the needy. Let not your left hand. Know what your right hand is doing very tempting to look at this phrase in an allegorical way many. Have you do knowing that the body, the church is the body of Christ and maybe you should know what I'm doing and so on, you know, it's far deeper than that first while it's a probably existed as a proverbial saying in their day. So probably Jesus is adopting a saying. But the point is that, this is now turning the spotlight on something that happens. Even with those who do follow me here, who do not trumpet their Works before others.

In fact. So Insidious is this desire for praise. Personal praise. Is one who may have lived their life, keeping their service on the down low. And congratulating themselves for it. You see the person? I really want to be praised by Of all the people on the world is myself. Jesus says, don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Jamison faucet. Brown old dusty commentary. I have on the Shelf. I sneeze when I use this commentary cuz it's so dusty. They say collectively. This is so far from making a display. That you do not even do well on it in Vine own thoughts.

Don't let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.

How can a Christian ensure his motives were talking about motives here are motives oriented towards making Christ known and not being concerned with myself being known? Even in my own heart?

Second Secret. The last thing reward. Will say it this way if the first one was Boo beware of your desire to be seen. This is be willing to secret yourself. You know you can use the word secret as and Ferb I still James Bond secret away into the night. I don't know. Be willing to take yourself and secret yourself. What are we talkin about here? It's not one. Hundred percent being unaware of what you're doing. That would, obviously be absurd. You'd have to be either in an amnesiac or a zombie. I supposed to not be understanding what you're doing. Is not a hundred percent, keeping your actions from yourself. It's not a hundred percent, keeping your actions from other people. Think about this, imagine me trying to do this. Good work. The preaching in private. I don't know if I put up with a scream and mask my voice, I don't know what I do. You do? We do we do our good works and they are seen we're having a ballot come up next week, aren't we need people doing good works and we're commanding them for it and saying amen. That's the right person for that role. I will say don't keep your desire to serve to yourself. It's it's not an active humility to just not speak up and say, I'd like to do that activity lead in that way in the church. Don't expect the elders to see something that you're keeping heading that way, or your brothers and sisters in the congregation. This is obviously not literally 100%. Don't let your left hand, know what your right is doing. Hide it from yourself and others, rather keep yourself secret yourself in this way from announcing your actions.

There's a bird in the in North America. The largest bird that exists in North America. Do you know what it is? It's a swan. Beautiful, beautiful Swan. It's its wings. Stretch over 6ft. It's behavior is one of making itself known it. Thrives in the wild because it can do this. It's called the trumpeter swan. Jesus is simply saying don't strut about like one who trumpets his or her actions. Expecting praise from others. Preening itself making a display. Don't trumpet your praises and expect others to stand at attention when you do it says this in Proverbs 27. Over and against all of this animalistic Instinct that says let another praise you and not your own mouth. A stranger and not your own lips. The secret here is the willingness you know, you say, Well, I have to be honest, I'm not willing when they're afraid to be willing. We'll fair enough. It's like the man saying. I believe help my unbelief willing, make me willing. Lord, that's the secret. That's the secret. Verse for this, we close these verses.

Get your motivation, right? Be willing to secret yourself. so that you're giving may be in secret,

and your father who sees in secret will Reward you.

Just notice.

Your father sees. In secret this is Formula begins to appear your father sees your father sees in chapter 6 again and again.

This third secret to reward is not to be where, but to be all wear. Of your father seeing you. Scripture, once you tune into this frequency, you see it everywhere in Scripture, it says in Jeremiah 17. I the Lord search the heart and test the mind to give every man, according to his ways according to the fruit of his deeds. Doesn't Hebrews 4:13 of course we all stand naked exposed to God scrutiny. He sees he sees all that. You do all that you think it says they're all the motivations your father Sees In Secret. He sees all people secretly says, in Jeremiah chapter 23. Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him declares the Lord do not. I fill Heaven and Earth. Declares the Lord. Cease. In secret. But the verse goes on, it will reward you. Isn't that he might with might reward, it says he will reward. Every secret active service will be real warded. You like King Jimmy says, we talked about her majesty now. King jammys, King James version. King Jimmy says, he will reward you openly Openly.

No access to small. It says, in Matthew 10:40 to whoever gives one of these little ones, even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple. Truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward. She's not wages its graciousness toward rudimentary menial. Obedience Your reward. Even such small ax. In doing this act of righteousness is a kindness to the Lord himself, it even says way back in the Old Testament, in 1st Samuel chapter 2 there for the Lord, the god of Israel. Declares, I promise that your house and the house of your father should go in and out before me forever, but now the Lord declares far be it from me. For those who honor me, I will honor those who despise me shall be lightly esteemed. All your practicing of righteousness, is an honoring to the Lord and he sees that secret motivation, his reward. We said its relationship. It's it's something beyond our imagination. Jesus says in Matthew 25. It's a kingdom. Matthew, 25 in verse 34. I'll turn there.

In verse 34.

Speaking about the final judgement.

Then the king will say to those on his right, you are blessed by my father, inherit the Kingdom. As reward is a kingdom. Prepared for you. From the foundation of the world for. I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty, you gave me drink, I was stranger, you welcomed me. You gave homes verse 36, I was naked. You called me? I was sick. You visited me. I was in prison. You came to me than the right choice will answer him. Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty. And so on. Verse 40 says, the king will answer them. Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these, my brothers, you did to me.

Luke chapter 8. If we had time, we see everything comes to light Nothing is hidden, that will not be made manifest, Luke chapter 14 when giving a feast invite the poor, the lame, the crippled, the blind do the arms in that way and you'll be blessed because they cannot repay you. It says, for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just What will this reward be its relationship? It's it's a kingdom. It's more than we can imagine. It's in 1st Corinthians 4.

Don't pronounce judgment before the time before the Lord comes will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness, and will disclose the purposes of the heart than each one will receive his commendation.

Proverbs.

1917, whoever is generous to the poor.

Solomon says, lens to the Lord.

And he will repay him for his deed.

Be aware. Of your father. Seeing you, we've already established that he sees be aware of what he sees. He sees your arms. You know, that's a weird word for us when we see it on the screen alms, I just think of it this way. All my service alms was it just money back in their date. Could been served all service for any need Whether it's time. Some of you have very little time. Maybe if you're like me, you realize less and less time remains.

Some of you have more time.

But there's only so much time you can't make it more or less. Hours in the day. Whether it's your time he sees it, whether it's your talent, some of you are so talented. That it cost you in the worldly sense to serve the Lord, cuz you could be making money or gaining Fame through your talent. Some of you are so limited in Talent.

But you must take what talent you have. And give it to the Lord, to the one who could do something with it in a deep show of trust. Like, the Widow's Mite, And yes, he sees our treasure, he sees your checkbook. Just this past week, a brother said to me, show me a man's checkbook. I'll show you what he loves, he sees your checkbook, or your PayPal, or venmo, or whatever, they use these days, those digital ways of paying and buying

He sees all of those things that you do they don't appear on your giving statement from the church. He sees that all he sees your actions, he sees when you give, he sees your attitude, he sees why you give, that's what he sees. And there is a day coming brother and sister when nothing will be secret. When all will be revealed. And that day won't end.

There's a weight of Glory. I know this takes sacrifice, amen. But there's a weight of glory and says in 2nd Corinthians 4. This light, momentary Affliction is preparing for us, an eternal weight of Glory beyond all comparison.

What a gracious. God, that would share any Glory with us. And there it says, any ternal weight of it. Of course, a glory that we can utilize forever to Proclaim his glorious existence. The quantity of Glory to quality of glory and reward or the possibility of release of of lost. It, Jesus's presenting to you today. It is what is described by Paul in 1st Corinthians 3. It says, according to the grace of God, given to me, like a skilled master builder, I laid the foundation. He was talented. As someone else is like, building a pond at Let each one, take care how he builds upon it, but no one can lay a foundation other than that, which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Know if anyone built on the foundation with gold silver, precious stones would hay or straw. Each one's work will become manifest for the day will disclose it because it will be revealed by fire. And the fire will test what sort of work. Each one has done. This is your life. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive reward. If anyone's work is burnt out. He will suffer loss, though. He himself will be saved but only as Through Fire. What's the difference? Not trumpeting your good works. That one of us would have been gold, silver, precious stones had they not been trumpeted for your own praise.

But instead proclaiming Jesus Christ. Together, 3 secrets. Today on his Majesty's, Secret Service beware be willing, be all where do where your desire to be seen? Be willing to secret yourself. Be aware that God sees the father sees and he will reward. Will you set your heart on reward that lasts? It's a lesson in my life, testimony time, Judy, you, gave yours. I'll give one that I love. I could give my salvation testimony, here's a testimony. 40 years. After I said, I never understood this for a moment till that day it was a job situation. Workplace environment and boy did I get bent out of shape? If I wasn't given credit for what I had done and you know, it's pretty normal on the workplace. Someone else would take credit for something unit. I want sat and my commanding officers office and he was on the phone with another high-ranking. Officer saying he did something that I did. And I just wanted to throw the computer through the wall. I get so bent out of shape. When I read things like this inscription, I said to myself Shane, are you a Christian? Do you believe that God sees this? Then let it go. you know, immediately in my life, the very next day I experienced a freedom A freedom to practice righteousness. I didn't care who saw didn't have anything to hide. I didn't have anything to trump it. Oh dear Christian, I don't care if it takes you if it's been 40 years for you like it was for me.
