Matthew 6:25–34 ESV
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? 26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? 28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you. 34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Matthew
Sermon on the mount
Lay up treasures in heaven
Introduction
Follows instructions about what to do about extra things “treasures on earth”
Now teaches about the basic things
First Point
Matthew 6:25 ESV
25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

The principle: Do not let earthly needs cause you to stress out or worry because God is your Father (25)

Last wee the main point was that we shouldn’t pursue earthly wants, this week it is not to worry about earthly needs.
Different time
struggle with hunger was very real
Example: Third world countries crying in the produce section of grocery store.
Temptation to worry not just for yourself but also your children.
Second Point
Matthew 6:26–27 ESV
26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? 27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?

The first example: God provides for the birds and will provide for you so worry does not accomplish anything (26-27)

Third Point
Matthew 6:28–30 ESV
28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, 29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

The second example: God clothes the plants better than man ever could and will provide for you too (28-30b)

Fourth Point
Matthew 6:30b ESV
30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

The root of anxiety: Unbelief (30c)

Fifth Point
Matthew 6:31–32 ESV
31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

The application: Your living should be different from the world around you because they don’t have faith but you do (31-32)

Sixth Point
Matthew 6:33 ESV
33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

The key to abolishing worry: Seek the kingdom and the righteous living that is characterized by it’s citizens and God will take care of you(33)

Seventh Point
Matthew 6:34 ESV
34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

The final exhortation: Don’t worry about tomorrow (34)
