Have you ever felt alone?

It is normal to sometimes be alone, and many feel alone when they are by themselves, but there is far worse loneliness than being and feeling alone and that is feeling alone in a crowded room.

Even greater is feeling alone amongst friends.

I remember one time, when I was in college, a group of my friends all went on a day trip. I wasn’t invited. It’s wasn’t that I had FOMO (fear of missing out) it was that none of them thought to invite me. Actually I don’t even think I would have like what they were going to do, but that feeling of loneliness emerges when you feel no one is thinking of you!

You never have to feel alone again. Because there is someone who wants to be with you everywhere you go.

That is who I wan tto talk about today.

Provide Solution

We are continuing our series entitled “Anchored” and looking at what we believe. Things we hold to be true in Scripture as Core Beliefs, Core Doctrines.

In our first message we learned that everything we believe is founded in the infallible, inerrant word of God. The Bible is the anchor we hold on to. The second week we discovered that God is one, but revealed in three “persons.” Last week we examined Jesus as completely human and completely divine.

Today we are looking at another link in the chain that ties us to the Anchor of scripture. That link is the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is essential to the believer because He empowers us to live out God's will, transforms our character, and provides constant guidance, comfort, and strength in a way that our human nature cannot achieve on its own. 

There are certain things we receive through the Spirits power that we can’t have on our own!

The Holy Spirit was sent to be our Helper and Comforter

John 14:15–17

“15 “If you love me, obey my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you. 17 He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn’t looking for him and doesn’t recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and later will be in you.”

1 Corinthians 6:19

“19 Don’t you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself,”

We often take for granted the presence of the Holy Spirit in a believers life. It wasn’t always like this.

We find in the Old Testament that the Spirit was only given to select people for specific purposes.

Samson in Judges 14:6

“6 At that moment the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him, and he ripped the lion’s jaws apart with his bare hands. He did it as easily as if it were a young goat. But he didn’t tell his father or mother about it.”

David in 1 Samuel 16:13

“13 So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.”

Gideon in Judges 6:34

“34 Then the Spirit of the Lord clothed Gideon with power.

Bezalel in Exodus 31:1–5

“1 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 “Look, I have specifically chosen Bezalel son of Uri, grandson of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 I have filled him with the Spirit of God, giving him great wisdom, ability, and expertise in all kinds of crafts. 4 He is a master craftsman, expert in working with gold, silver, and bronze. 5 He is skilled in engraving and mounting gemstones and in carving wood. He is a master at every craft!”

But God had a bigger plans.

Joel 2:28–29

“28 “Then, after doing all those things, I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions. 29 In those days I will pour out my Spirit even on servants—men and women alike.

The Holy Spirit was sent to be our Teacher and Revealer of Truth.

John 16:13

“13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future.”

John 14:26

“26 But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.”

The Spirit illuminates human understanding of Scripture, clarifies God's will, and brings the teachings of Jesus to active remembrance. 

The Holy Spirit was sent to Sanctify and Transform our lives.

The Spirit works internally to cultivate the "Fruit of the Spirit"—which includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control—gradually shaping a believer's character to reflect Jesus Christ. 

Galatians 5:22–23

“22 But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!”

The Holy Spirit was sent to be our Intercessor.

When believers are weak, overwhelmed, or do not know how to articulate their prayers, the Holy Spirit directly intercedes for them according to God's perfect will. 

Romans 8:26

“26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words.”

The Holy Spirit was sent to be our Gift-Giver.

The Spirit equips every believer with specific spiritual gifts—such as wisdom, leadership, faith, or teaching—designed to serve others and build up the church community. 

1 Corinthians 12:7

“7 A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.”

The Holy Spirit was sent for the Convicting of Sin.

Before a person becomes a believer, the Holy Spirit works on their conscience, revealing personal sin, pointing toward righteousness, and exposing the reality of divine judgment to highlight the need for a Savior. 

John 16:8

“8 And when he comes, he will convict the world of its sin, and of God’s righteousness, and of the coming judgment.”

The Holy Spirit was sent to Empower the Church.

The Spirit provides boldness, spiritual power, and direction to the Christian church, enabling believers to effectively share the gospel across cultural and geographical borders

Acts 1:8

“8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.””
