Habits, are they good?

We all have habits, ones that shape our lives for the good, others not so much good. (Share something personal here; keep it brief)
What is one habit you have that shapes your life today, be it good or bad? How did it become a part of your daily routine?
(Pause, get people involved)
Spiritual habits work the same way. Today we will be looking at that.
Big Idea: Spiritual growth happens through consistent time with God
Our key scriptures: Act2:42; Ps1:1-3; Mt6:6-13.

Introduction: Walking With God Is Learned

Have you had someone or maybe even ask yourself any of these questions?
How do I grow spiritually?
What does it mean to walk with God every day?
How do I stay strong in my faith?
What habits help me stay close to God?
The early Christians were devoted (Act2:42). They delighted in God’s word (Ps1:1-3) and they were praying (Mt6:6-13) all of these are healthy habits to grow spiritually.
Walking with God is learned, it is not automatic.

Importance Of Scripture

Turn with me to Psalm 1:1–3 “How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers! But his delight is in the law of the Lord, And in His law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.”
The Psalm (Ps1:1-3) describes a person who:
Delights in God’s word
Meditates on it day and night
Becomes like a tree planted by water
Bears fruit, has stability, and prospers spiritually
Scripture is nourishment. It feeds the mind, strengthens the heart, and guides the path.
Question: What helps Scripture move from “something I read” to “something that shapes me”? (pause and allow a few answers)
Something to ponder: Which part of Scripture do you need to plant your roots in right now?

Importance Of Prayer

Again, please turn with me to Matthew 6:6–13 ““But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you. “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. “So do not be like them; for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him. “Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. ‘Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. ‘Give us this day our daily bread. ‘And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. ‘And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’”
Prayer is not just talking to God — it is connecting with Him. Jesus taught the disciples to pray in this manner.
Relationship - “Our Father. . .”
Reverence - “Hallowed be Your name”
Submission - “Your will be done . . .”
Dependence - “Give us this day. . .”
Confession - “Forgive us. . .”
Protection - “Deliver us . . .”
Question: What makes prayer difficult or inconsistent for many Christians? (Pause for response)
Something to ponder: If prayer is conversation with your Father, what changes in how you approach it?

The Importance Of Worship

Please turn to Acts 2:42 “They were continually devoting themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.”
The early church was devoted to (Act2:42):
Teaching
Fellowship
Breaking of bread
Prayer
Worship is not just singing — it is orienting your heart toward God it includes:
Gathering with fellow believers
Praising God together
Remembering Christ
Encouraging one another
Sharing life together
Question: How does worship —both private and with the church— shape your spiritual life? (Pause for answers)
Something to Ponder: What part of worship do you personally need to lean into more?

Application: Establish Daily Habits That Nourish

Spiritual growth is not accidental — it is intentional
Slow down, encourage the congregation to develop these habits or return to them.
A daily routine of prayer
A daily Scripture reading plan
A weekly worship routine
A quiet place to meet with God
A simple routine: Word + Prayer + Worship = a spiritually growing Christian
Question: What is one spiritual habit you can start, or needs to be strengthened right now?
Small habits practiced consistently produce deep roots.

Conclusion- Walking with God Is a Daily Journey

Walking with God is not about perfection —it’s about direction. It’s choosing, day by day, to meet with God, listen to Him, and follow Him.
Spiritual habits do not earn salvation — they grow salvation’s fruit.

Major takeaway:

Choose one daily habit —prayer, scripture, or worship —and commit to practicing it every day this week. For small steps build strong roots.
