Transcript
What does Jesus mean to you? How much influence does He have in your day to day decisions? Does He impact how you treat people? How you talk to your spouse? You Children? Does He influence the priorities you make?
Paul, in writing to the Colossians is trying to help them understand the place Jesus should have in their lives and the reasons why he should matter to them.
After telling them what Jesus has done for them, he reminds them who Jesus is. Beginning in Colossians 1:15, Paul says this...
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
He is God, who became flesh and lived among us.
For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him.
Everything around you, everyone you see, Government officials, your boss, your employees, all of it was created by Jesus and for Jesus.
He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.
And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy.
Jesus was here before any of this was created and it all stays moving because he commands it to. He is also over the church. It is His and He has the say so in how it functions.
For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him,
and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Here is the key to what Jesus means to us. He is the part of the Trinity that came to earth on behalf of God and was the part of God that was sacrificed so that we could be reconciled to Him.
Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of your evil behavior.
But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation—
if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.
This morning we come together, as members of His body to remember, as He commanded us to do, His death, burial and resurrection.
Each time we gather and partake of these emblems, we are to remember the gospel message in this one act.
So, this morning as we take of these emblems, I want to ask you consider these questions, while you eat this bread and drink this cup.
What does Jesus mean to you personally?
How does He influence your daily decisions and priorities?
Does your speech and actions point people to Jesus or away from Him?
