Commit to the Lord, in whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.

Most of us have been following the recently ended World Cup.

Initially the question had been Messi or Ronaldo.

But after Portugal was knocked out by Norway, it slowly became a question of Messi, Mbappe, or Porro.

And for those who followed the final earlier this week, who won?

It’s been said of football, because it’s round, it can roll for or against you.

“Rolling” is the idea behind the word “Commit” in our passage this morning from the 37th Psalm

Psalm 37:5–6 reads:

“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.

He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday.”

Have you ever felt that your life is like a football sometimes, being kicked here and there?

Sometimes it feels that you’re rolling towards your goal, pushed forward by supporting friends and family members.

But other times it feels that you’re rolling out of control, pushed away by people and things you don’t like.

The Psalmist who was the author of the 37th Psalm felt just like that.

He reminds himself over and over again not to get angry because of the bad people in his life.

God is in control.

Instead, he reminds himself, and us, who are listening to his words to “Commit our way to the LORD”

Or more literally, in the Hebrew language, to “Roll our way to the LORD; throw ourselves down on our faces and trust God, and God will do and act.”

Rolling our ways and our lives to God, surrendering to Him, and trusting that he will act according to his promise is not easy at all.

Because it means firstly, to roll ourselves into God’s way, not our own ways.

It means telling God that maybe I don’t know the correct way to live.

I don’t know how to solve the big and small problems in my life.

I’m not even sure I can even survive the upcoming WA3s or prelims.

And then secondly, just throw ourselves down on the floor in surrendered prayer.

And you tell God - God, your word tells me that you will bring forth my righteousness as the light,

and my justice as the noonday.

God, there are many things that are not clear and are still in the dark in my life.

Come and shine your light, change my life, and heal me.

And then one day.

One day, but we can’t see it yet.

Just as before the World Cup started, no one knew who the winners were.

But now, today, just a few days after the World Cup finals, we all know who the winning team is.

So one day, all those who have rolled their ways to the LORD, and have placed themselves at God’s feet.

They will see and find that God has acted and has helped.

Whether through the exams, adjusting to a new teacher, a new job, a new environment.

One day, you will have been rolled by God to a place where your things will work out justly and fairly for you.

One day, you will see that your decision to trust in God was a good one.

And one day, God’s light will shine as bright as the noonday sun.

Because you have rolled your way to the LORD.
