Open you bibles with me to Luke 13:22-30.
We are continuing in our sermon series through the gospel of Luke.
I’m trying to run again. It’s going ok. I’m getting older. I feel it in places like my hip. Apparently, there is nothing structurally wrong with my hip. It just hurts. Now, I’m just out of shape. But when I ran a lot. It was like my thing. You learn a lot of interesting stories about running.
One was in the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis. There were many strange things about this event. One, because the course was 24 miles, and not 26.2 miles. The other is how blistering hot and humid it was on race day. Heat is a big deal, but humidity is a much bigger one. Runners learn the hard way about the dew point. If it’s above 84%-85%, it’s not going to be a good day. So St. Louis in the middle of summer was less than ideal.
There were only 32 runners. So that’s not too many. But two rival runners were Thomas Hicks and Fred Lorz. And as the race endured, a few interesting turns happened. In fact, only 14 runners actually finished the race. Seven miles to the finish line, Thomas Hicks collapsed. But with the help of trainers. He was revived and finished the race. He arrived at the finish in 2nd place. He didn’t win. Fred Lorz was the clear winner. When Lorz turned the corner for the home stretch, the crowd erupted in cheers. The victor is coming into the home stretch.
And while he was about to receive his gold medal from President Roosevelt’s daughter, Alice. A charge arose. CHEATER!! He’s a cheater!! Lorz apparently declined the medal and claimed it was all a joke.
See earlier in the race, around mile 9, Lorz began cramping. And discreetly got into a vehicle that drove him 11 miles ahead, and where Lorz got out of the vehicle and continued to run the remaining few miles to the finish, where he, to no surprise, had now won the race.
Lorz was embarrassed. Outraged that he had been outed, he tried to claim it was just a joke. The crowd has been fooled, and he thought it was funny. But claimed he was never intending to receive the prize.
Yet, there he was on the podium. Exposed, ashamed, and disqualified.
The very thing that by all optics was deserved from him was taken away.
It was taken away because he sought to win and finish through a way of entry point NOT allowed. And there is Hicks, who arrived late to the finish, who is now declared to be the winner.
And that brings us to our text today in Luke 13. Jesus addressed a people who assumed they were on track to enter the Kingdom of God. They are comfortable. They are even near Jesus. They assume the prize is theirs!
But Jesus gives a chilling warning to those who assume they have won entry, only to stand before the Judge on the final day, exposed and disqualified, because they refused the only way of entry. And their prize is then given to another, who came through the right point of entry in the Kingdom.
Sermon Summary - All who are saved are saved through the door of Christ alone.
22 He went on his way through towns and villages, teaching and journeying toward Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to him, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them, 24 “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then he will answer you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’ 26 Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ 27 But he will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’ 28 In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves cast out. 29 And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

I. Strive To Enter Salvation (v.22-24)
As you recall, Jesus is on his way to Jerusalem. He is right in the middle of the journey to the cross. It’s what starts in Luke 9:51. And all along, Jesus has been teaching about the Kingdom and declaring its coming. And here, Luke gives us a few of someone’s questions about the kingdom.
22 He went on his way through towns and villages, teaching and journeying toward Jerusalem. 23 And someone said to him, “Lord, will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them, 24 “Strive to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able.
The question at hand is a natural question. Lord, will those saved be few? Will it be small in number? Now, it’s difficult to know the sincerity of this question. There are a few ways to ask this question. We might ask this question because we are skeptical. Jesus has been teaching on the nature of the time. The division that Jesus brings. The invitation to take up your cross. The difficulty of the road of Jesus. That Judgement is coming and is near. The borrowed time of the Fig tree. It would cause one to wonder. Like his disciples in Luke 18:26, when Jesus gave the parable of the rich man. Lord, will anyone be saved?
So there may be skepticism. There may be sarcasm. Well, Jesus, is anyone getting in. I mean, you say you are bringing the kingdom, but we don’t see it growing. We actually see things to be very small. I mean, you say you are bringing the kingdom of God. Why isn’t it bigger, Jesus? And why are people walking away from you? And not flocking towards you.
Maybe of disappointment. We want this to happen, so why isn’t it happening like we hoped?
Finally, it may be a question of security. In other words, am I a part of it? And for the Jew, they gave themselves a lot of comfort in this area. They presumed that they were a part of the Kingdom and that everyone else was outside of God’s Kingdom.
This is from the Mishnah -
All Israelites have a share in the world to come, for it is written, Thy people also shall be all righteous, they shall inherit the land for ever; the branch of my planting, the work of my hands that I may be glorified. And these are they that have no share in the world to come: he that says that there is no resurrection of the dead prescribed in the Law, and [he that says] that the Law is not from Heaven, and an Epicurean. (Sanhedrin 10:1)
So there was a comfort in the minds of the Jews of security. Contentment. So, are those who will be saved few? Well, I’m glad I’m in.
It’s a question that keeps many minds entertained. And the reality is that it is NOT for us to know. God saves whom he chooses. He’s sovereign over and sovereign in salvation. Because really what matters isn’t the quality so much as the concern is for us, and our interest. My family. My friends. Those that I care about. What about them!
But Jesus doesn’t take the bait. He doesn’t really answer the question directly. He pivots instead. He pivots in the direction of the heart. And he said to THEM - this person wasn’t the only one asking. But here is Jesus ‘ answer: Are those who are saved FEW?
JESUS SAYS - YOU STRIVE to enter through the NARROW DOOR!
The word there for strive is the Greek word - Agonizoami. It means to struggle; to fight. You can hear it, even in the Greek term. To AGONIZE!
It’s a word that means to contend! Originally used in the context of athletic games. To contend for the prize.
28 Him we proclaim, warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom, that we may present everyone mature in Christ. 29 For this I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.
9 The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance. 10 For to this end we toil and strive, because we have our hope set on the living God, who is the Savior of all people, especially of those who believe.
Jesus says there is a striving that is good and right, to enter the kingdom!! A posture, a disposition. Does Jesus mean works righteousness here? NOT at all.
Here is what an old Baptist, John Gill, said. He spoke of the dependence on the means of grace that God has given.
To strive, is to be diligent in the use of means; to search the Scriptures with care; to attend on the preaching of the word with constancy, neglecting no opportunity; to pray earnestly for spiritual light, knowledge, and grace; to contend with every enemy that opposes the salvation of the soul, as sin, Satan, and the world; to bear all reproaches and persecutious, and press through all difficulties, for the prize of the incorruptible crown.
And Jesus says, further, we are to strive to enter THE narrow door!! There is only one entry point. It is narrow. Meaning it is a small opening that cannot be entered without distress.
And this door. Requires something of you!! It requires your seeking. It requires your squeezing in. You won’t fit through it naturally. You must instead be conformed in some way to it in order to fit!! There is but one point of entry.
13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
And that entry, you know, is only Jesus Christ!! Jesus says this exclusively in John 10:7-9
7 So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8 All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.
This is the exclusivity of Jesus. That salvation is found in no other name but Jesus Christ. Until we have found salvation in Christ and Christ alone, then we must continue searching, seeking, mining, conforming our mind and heart to Christ!
Not in earning salvation, but being broken of any other means of peace with GOD! That we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus. That God’s work in us is to humble us, that we see our righteousness in Christ alone. We repent of our sin and confess Christ as the only way of redemption. It means to forsake ourselves and run to Jesus for mercy!
And that is the very thing the Jews refused to do. They refused to come to Christ. They refused to enter through Christ as the only way of Salvation.
They thought they could earn it through lawkeeping. Not knowing the law was meant to bring us to our need of a redeemer. They thought they could earn through proximity to their heritage, not knowing it was Christ who was the true seed of blessing and promise!
And the very thing that Christ offered, through salvation, was the very thing they refused, because they were unwilling to humble themselves - REPENT and BELIEVE!!
This is the work of striving to enter the KINGDOM! Not works of our righteousness, but a denial of them!! THROUGH REPENTANCE and faith in JESUS. To humble ourselves, and cling solely unto Christ for MERCY!!
There is only one door that leads to salvation!! And we must be willing to listen to wisdom and diligent to know the way of salvation (Prov 2) is through the way God has ordained, through His son, and through His gospel!
There is a door of distinction that God has ordained. And He requires upright faith and uncorrupted faith. He requires spotless morality….And it is only Jesus who fulfills what God requires for salvation! And thereby is the only means of redemption. That ALL WHO are saved. Whether many or FEW, ALL MUST come through the NARROW door of Jesus Christ for salvation!!
For many will seek to enter, and because they come through another way, or because they refuse to STRIVE to surrender to Christ’s way, they will not be ABLE!! Thus, the door of distinction becomes a door of denial, because they know not CHRIST!!
My friend, what are you clinging to for salvation? That you are a good enough person? You are better than the next? If you have not entered through the door of Christ, through repentance (turning from your sin) and faith (turning towards Jesus for mercy), then you are still on the outside of the kingdom!!
May you strive to enter, not through effort, but by grace through faith in Christ. Run to Jesus today!

Part of the reason Jesus speaks of striving and with urgency is because the door will not remain open forever. Jesus makes that clear in verse 25. But there is a close connection, both grammatical and logical, to verses 24-25. Jesus is describing a progression here.
25 When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ‘Lord, open to us,’ then he will answer you, ‘I do not know where you come from.’
Jesus is clearly speaking of Israel’s refusal to come to him for salvation. They are rejecting God’s means of redemption through Jesus as the Messiah. That has been the warning contextually. That the kingdom is coming in a way you do not expect. That it is Jesus who is fulfilling the Old Testament, and salvation that God brings, is only found through Christ.
Here, Jesus speaks again of the “Master of the House.” You recall Jesus did this in Luke 12:39, that the master of the house is returning in an hour that you do not expect, so you must be PREPARED for His return! Jesus has warned them that the time of preparation is drawing near. The time of now to REPENT. The Fig Tree is living on borrowed time already!
And here, Jesus says, when the master of the house has risen and shut the door. You will be too late! You’ll be on the outside of the house, begging the Lord to open the DOOR!! By the way, do you notice Luke makes it crystal clear there that Jesus is the LORD of the HOUSE!! He’s the one who opens and shuts the door of the KINGDOM!! HE is KYRIOS!!
And you must enter the kingdom through HIM!! But you cannot delay forever, for there is an allotted time. And if you wait until it’s too late, you will be on the outside!!
A judgment is coming sooner than you think. Death is coming sooner than you may think. We like to put things off until the last possible moment. We just, here is the word, PRESUME that we can come to Jesus whenever we want!! And presume, the door will be opened at our choosing!! We are the captains of our own ship!! The king of our own domain!!
But you ARE NOT THE LORD!! And you are not the MASTER!! And you do not open and shut the door at your choosing!! It is the Lord who saves! It is the Lord who steers and prompts!! And we must be careful, not rejecting His Spirit’s prompting, lest we delay too long, and the door is shut. We never get around to those well-intentioned things, or to repentance and faith in Jesus.
You know, the Devil’s best friend is denial and delay!! I’m good… Or I can do that another day! I can save that for the future! No need for urgency now!! And Jesus says, there is every need for urgency now!! There is coming a moment when it will be TOO LATE!
The door will be shut!!
Oh that we might be careful with the moments and prompting of God TODAY!! Lest we deny them, delay them, and realize it’s too late, the door is closed!!
This is what the writer of Hebrews warns in Hebrews 12:15-17
15 See to it that no one fails to obtain the grace of God; that no “root of bitterness” springs up and causes trouble, and by it many become defiled; 16 that no one is sexually immoral or unholy like Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. 17 For you know that afterward, when he desired to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, for he found no chance to repent, though he sought it with tears.
And what a tragedy to wait and delay, and arrive to the master’s house on the day of JUDGEMENT. And you stand outside, and you knock, and the LORD declares, “I DON’T know where you come from!!
The same tragic truth is seen in Matthew 7:21-23
21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ 23 And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’
And that’s what Jesus says here. Luke 13:26-27
26 Then you will begin to say, ‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ 27 But he will say, ‘I tell you, I do not know where you come from. Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’
Here lies a great warning!! The people of Israel had NEARNESS to the KINGDOM of GOD!! They ate, and they drank in your presence!! This is a picture of the fellowship meal, a picture of intimacy! They had nearness and what appeared to be intimacy with the Kingdom, but they were left out of the Kingdom of Christ!
He dined with them! He walked among them. He often tells them to come and sit and drink from living waters to be found only in HIM! But they would not!
They had familiarity with the Kingdom of God! - Jesus taught in their very streets!! They knew of him going from town to town and village to village, but they would not come to Him and find LIFE in HIM!! They had familiarity with Jesus, but they had no true share with Jesus and His Kingdom
They had proximity to Jesus. He was right there. But their hearts were far from Jesus!!
We need to be careful, beloved….being CLOSE to the kingdom is not the same as being IN the Kingdom of God!! You can go to church, sing the songs, take the Lord’s Supper, and share in the mark of Baptism! You can tithe. You can serve. You can do all the right things….Could have been RAISED in the church….. BE CLOSE!!! BUT MISS THE MARK!! NONE of those things save a person!! Good things, but they are not the basis of entrance!!
For there is only one door, we must enter, and if we forsake that entry, we will miss out!! And the Lord will say of us!! - DEPART from me!! All you workers of EVIL!!
It’s not that they were close and well-intentioned, but slightly off that their hearts reveal they were so far from the heart of GOD!!
This is interesting wordplay: being known by God, but the Lord not knowing where you come from. It’s a picture of the all-knowing, intimate, creator God, who knows His CHILDREN. He calls them by name. This is God’s character! He called Jeremiah before He was born. He calls forth Israel and Ephriam. The Lord knows who are HIS….and here in stark contrast, Jesus says, “I dont know where you come from! “DEPART from me!! GO AWAY!!” You are all workers of EVIL!
Jesus doesn’t know them!! And He positively REJECTS THEM!!
This is language of Psalm 6:6-8
6 I am weary with my moaning; every night I flood my bed with tears; I drench my couch with my weeping. 7 My eye wastes away because of grief; it grows weak because of all my foes. 8 Depart from me, all you workers of evil, for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping.
And it’s always been this way! It’s like that in Luke 7:31 - what shall I compare this generation to, and what are they like? We played the flute for you, and you did not dance. We sang dirge, and you did not weep! You didn’t receive John’s Message; it was too harsh. You don’t believe my message, it’s not on your terms, so you reject it!!
You want a sign, but it’s an evil generation that asks for a sign. You always need something else. You always need it to be on your terms, and according to your understanding….But God is doing something bigger than your mind can comprehend, and you’re missing out on the Kingdom of God, right before you!!
Because what you refused to do was humble yourself, and REPENT and come to Christ for salvation!!
So you have nearness. And intimacy, and familiarity, and proximity, and still MISS THE KINGDOM!!
And TRUTH be told. You can’t receive the kingdom because hearts are so far from seeing what God is doing through CHRIST!! - So, TWICE Jesus says - I don’t know where you come from!!... DEPART FROM ME, you workers of evil!!
Do you know Christ? Do you know the heart of Christ….But more importantly. Does Christ know you as one of His sheep? That it be known from where you come, in that you come from the sheepfold of the field of Christ Jesus! ENTERING THROUGH that EXCLUSIVE door of SALVATION found in HIM alone!! NOT your deeds, NOT your doing, NOT your works!! But the FINISHED work of Christ, and being conformed in heart to HIM!!

All of this building. It started in Luke 11 with Israel’s nearness and hardness of heart, and it culminates in Luke 13:34
When Jesus is weeping over his own people rejecting Him.
Luke 13:34
34 O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing.
So here is Israel, near the kingdom. Familiar with the kingdom and propagated intimacy with the Kingdom, but missing out on the kingdom, much to their surprise.
28 In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but you yourselves cast out. 29 And people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and recline at table in the kingdom of God. 30 And behold, some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”
And there is Israel, like Fred Lorz on the finishers’ podium. Thinking they were among the first, but God says another has taken their place. Thinking they were entering the Kingdom, but they have been cast out! In that place, there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Weeping - they are ashamed, embarrassed, hopeless, filled with regret, the sorrow of crushed pride.
Gnashing of Teeth - They are angry and embittered. This is the bitter rage of those who refuse to bow, even in judgment.
Furthermore, it’s twice stated that the Kingdom of God is in view. That was clear from the context of the Mustard Seed and the Leaven. The Kingdom they longed to see, the Kingdom they anticipated and expected a rightful place in, they have been cast out!
And there is three fold reason for this regret, shame, and anger.
1. Old Testament Patriarchs - ABRAHAM, ISAAC, and JACOB, and all the prophets of the KINGDOM are in, but they are cast out!!
This is shocking.
It’s shocking because this was their ethnic heritage. The Jews prided themselves on belonging to Abraham. They saw themselves as privileged to be a part of Abraham’s family. This was their hope of the promise, yet they didn’t know that the true seed was the seed of Christ.
16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ.

This is what John the Baptist warned Israel to repent and flee from the coming wrath in Luke 3:8-9
8 Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 9 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
4 They are Israelites, and to them belong the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises. 5 To them belong the patriarchs, and from their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ, who is God over all, blessed forever. Amen.
And yet, the Patriarchs are in, and some are left out!! This is massive tension, which Paul will pick up later in Romans 9-11, but Luke says here that the Patriarchs are in because they possessed FAITH!
Moreover, the patriarchs possessed faith in a coming redeemer!
Old Testament saints aren’t saved any differently than you or I. They are saved in the same way we are saved. BY GRACE ALONE, THROUGH FAITH ALONE, in CHRIST ALONE!!
Abraham had faith - He believed God!! He trusted in God’s promise. He believed that God would offer a better sacrifice on the ALTER than His own Son, Issac.
ISSAC had faith on Mt Moriah to submit himself to the altar. He had faith to trust in God’s timing in marrying Rebekah, his bride. He had faith in offering a blessing for both Jacob and Esau.
Jacob had faith to bless Joseph’s sons Ephraim and Manasseh. He had faith clinging to God at Peniel.
And all three, among others are mentioned in the hall of faith in Hebrews 11: 13-16
13 These all died in faith, not having received the things promised, but having seen them and greeted them from afar, and having acknowledged that they were strangers and exiles on the earth. 14 For people who speak thus make it clear that they are seeking a homeland. 15 If they had been thinking of that land from which they had gone out, they would have had opportunity to return. 16 But as it is, they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared for them a city.
The patriarchs were a people of faith. They trusted the Lord. They longed for the Messiah and anticipated His coming, but they were a people of hope in a coming Messiah.
2. The 2nd Surprise is that of the Nations coming, at their expense.
To come from the EAST, WEST, NORTH, and THE SOUTH. That is from all directions. This is all the nations of the world. That is, the GENTILES have been included in the KINGDOM of God.
This was no neutral placement. These were Israel’s enemies. These were those considered unclean and undeserving, and now they are invited into the KINGDOM!!
1 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever! 2 Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, whom he has redeemed from trouble 3 and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south.
And God’s covenant promises are going to the NATIONS. A people of faith from every nation, tribe, and TOUNGUE (Rev 5:9).
This is Paul’s point in Romans 9-11. That though Israel was given a special status in God’s. It is not as though the word of God has failed.
6 But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, 7 and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.” 8 This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are counted as offspring.
And because of Israel’s hardness of heart and unbelief. The Gentiles have been included in God’s promises; they have been grafted in, Paul says in Romans.
11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him.
And for a Jew, they would have been indignant and frustrated at this reality.
3. Their surprise of the Kingdom Reversal.
Though they shared kingdom privileges, they were given elsewhere.
And while Israel was given a special place in the History of God. Through them would come the adoption, the glory, the covenants, the law and worship, and the promises, the patriarchs, and the Messiah. Because of their unbelief, the Gentiles, a wild olive shoot, were grafted in to share in the nourishing root of the OLIVE tree.
28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs according to promise.
Again, this is Fred Lorz on the podium stand, whose prize medal is given to another who hobbled in by sheer mercy!
The first, last, and the last first.
This is the measure of the Kingdom. This is the way of the Son of Man who can not be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom!
This is the way of the Kingdom of God. This is the way of Christ. HUMBLED HIMSELF on a sinner’s cross! Who was rich, he became poor. Who is very God of GODS, came and suffered as a man in the place of sinners!!
Christ, the PREEMINENT SON of GOD, took on flesh and BLOOD to SAVE US!!
It’s through the CROSS that all are welcomed in. It’s through the cross of JESUS that the NATIONS enter. And if we enter, it is in this way we too must enter!!
This is the GOSPEL of HIS KINGDOM….and those who belong to HIS KINGDOM must enter through the door of the KING! BOW their knee in humble submission to His Lordship. Cry out in REPENTANCE and say I’m not worth being here!!
I don’t belong here. I’m a rebel, I’m a wretch….I’m the VERY LEAST deserving of this!!

What started as a question - Lord, will those who are saved be few?
Jesus says, it’s not about that….It’s not about everyone else. It’s about your heart. It’s about your need. The question isn’t about everyone else. And questions you’ll never know the answer to or need to know the answer to!
The question is, will you be a part of the saved? And if you are, there is only ONE way - REPENTANCE and FAITH in CHRIST!!
Come while the door is still open. Come through the door of SALVATION in JESUS CHRIST ALONE!!
