Message: The Value of the Mother
Message: The Value of the Mother
Like Mother Like Son
The following is a United Press dispatch from New York: Magistrate Anna Kross called a mother from among spectators in court to take care of her wayward son—charged with throwing bottles through plate-glass windows. But when the mother, a demure-looking woman, stepped up to the bench, she was arrested on a charge considerably more serious than against her son. She was accused of using a broken bottle to cut the throat of a woman neighbor. The woman neighbor was in the hospital for two weeks. The mother had got into a row with her neighbor in a saloon. She picked up a beer bottle, broke off the bottom by striking it on a table and went to work with the jagged edge. Hardly a mother to assume any lofty moral tone with her boy for throwing bottles through plate-glass windows.

An Awareness of the holiness God Produces A Certain Style of Life: (1) Reverence of Parent; (2) observance of the Sabbath; and (3) the rejection of idols
Our Scriptural text is considered delightful summary of the Law. It gives us an awareness of the holiness of God that produces a certain style of life. Three of the ten commandments are amplified at this point, as illustrative of this reality. Reverence for parents, observance of the Sabbath, and the rejection of idols are the three commandments underscored.

The mother had got into a row with her neighbor in a saloon. She picked up a beer bottle, broke off the bottom by striking it on a table and went to work with the jagged edge. Hardly a mother to assume any lofty moral tone with her boy for throwing bottles through plate-glass windows.
25A foolish son is a grief to his father, And bitterness to her who bore him. The Mother is Revered in the Bible
(NKJV)
22Listen to your father who begot you, And do not despise your mother when she is old.
(NKJV)
12“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you. ( cp )
Reverencing parents is an act of piety towards God, since the parents are substitutes for the heavenly Father as far as their children are concerned.

However, I want you to note our Scriptural text
(NKJV) 3‘Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and keep My Sabbaths: I am the Lord your God.

“The first theocratic law of humanity is the root of all that follow, the law of piety. And here it is not said: ‘Father and mother,’ but mother and father; for the mother precedes the father in the duty of mankind.” Wordsworth says in reference to this order: “In the former chapter God had displayed the evils consequent on the abuse of woman, and here He inculcates reverence towards her, as the foundation of social happiness.” This is the fifth commandment of the Decalogue (), and is clearly necessary to be called to mind here; for as the family is the basis of all social organization, so is reverence to parents the first necessity of family order. Some Hinderances to Motherhood (1) Effective birth-control measures, (2)widespread abortion, (3) Women are giving less and less of their time to childbearing and rearing; (4) marriage is being delayed to allow career preparation and pursuit. (5) childbearing is farmed out to others—the carrying of the child in the womb, i.e., surrogate childbearing through in vitro fertilization.

Christianity’s best-kept secrets—that Jesus values women.
Christianity’s best-kept secrets—that Jesus values women.
women think the Bible makes us second-class citizens. But this is not true.
First of all, consider that God chose Mary to give birth to His Son.
Jesus performed His first miracle at the request of a woman, his mother. Consider also the story of the Samaritan woman at the well. Jesus told her the greatest secret in the history of the world. This woman too was an unlikely choice. The Jews hated the Samaritans; rabbis did not talk to women in public; and this woman had a terrible reputation in her hometown. Yet Jesus told her that He was the Messiah, the long-awaited One.

We need to remember not only that God sent His Son into the world born of a woman, but also that Jesus performed His first miracle at the request of a woman, his mother.

The story of Martha and Mary is often told to emphasize the importance of having one’s priorities in order. But there is another point to note. In the society of Jesus’ day, women were not taught by rabbis. Jesus cut across cultural barriers to elevate women to a position of equality. He told Martha that Mary had chosen the better part, to be with Him and to learn from Him.

Women ministered with and to Jesus Christ during His ministry on earth. The women stuck with Him.

Who was the first at the tomb? The women. To whom did Jesus first appear when He rose from the grave? Who was the first evangelist? It was a woman. She went and told the others the good news that Jesus was alive.
