Last time we were together, Paul was talking about the Lords supper. Tonight We will be discussing the Holy Spirit
Paul will spend the net two chapters on this topic spiritual gifts. It was an important topic at the time and now.
This is a topic at the time and now that has divided the covenant community of Christ.
I hope over the next few weeks I am able to teach these chapters in a way that will bring a greater knowledge of the subject.
We have people here from different backgrounds and I want to be respectful to both sides and teach it as biblical as I can.
If you have any comments or concerns about what I teach fill free to ask me about it after service.
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:
Paul has been answering questions that the church in Corinth has had throughout this letter.
In chapter seven he discussed marriage.
In chapters eight through ten he discussed food offered to idols.
In chapter eleven he discussed worship
Now he is switching to spiritual gifts
Paul say’s I don’t want you to be ignorant.
Uninformed
to misunderstand
The Greek word here is where we get the word agnostic.
without knowledge
What Paul is saying is I do not what you to misunderstand this important subject.
The New King James Version Chapter 12
12 Now concerning spiritual gifts
In the original Greek text the word gift does not exist.
It doesn't show up until verse four.
There the word is charismata which is plural.
We know there are many gifts
The Greek word used here that I’m not going to attempt to say means. Now concerning the spirituals
spiritual
belonging to the spirit
produced by the spirit.
Here Paul could be talking about.
spiritual gifts
spiritual matters
spiritual people
The Corinthians were fascinated by spiritual abilities and Paul wanted them to first focus on the giver of gifts, the Holy Spirit.
The Corinthians tied spirituality to dramatic worship experiences, and spectacular gifts
Paul's concern is truth, unity, humility , love, orderly worship, and most of all Christ being honored.
keeping the main thing the main thing
You know that you were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led.
Paul does not go directly in to spiritual gifts. He reminds them of there past before the excepted Christ. The word gentile here is pagan.
For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles—when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries.
And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.
You once were pagans but you have been saved by the grace of God.
You were led astray by mute idols but now you should be led by the Holy Spirit.
Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men’s hands.
They have mouths, but they do not speak; Eyes they have, but they do not see;
They have ears, but they do not hear; Noses they have, but they do not smell;
They have hands, but they do not handle; Feet they have, but they do not walk; Nor do they mutter through their throat.
Corinth was considered one of the most religious city's in the Roman empire.
The city had temples to Apollo, Aphrodite, Poseidon
Many forms of pagan worship involved
ecstatic speech
emotional excitement
prophetic utterances
ritual intoxication
many Corinthians because of this culture believed any dramatic experience must come from God.
Paul is saying no you are being swept away like sheep following a crowed.
You were led astray by these experiences with no prof that God was present.
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.
By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God,
and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the Antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world.
Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.
Now Paul instructs the church on decerning weather the Spirit that is leading them is the spirit of God.
The New King James Version Chapter 12
no one speaking by the Spirit of God
In the Greek this would be speaking in the spirit of God.
This means someone claiming to speak under spiritual inspiration
prophecy
tongues
teaching
public worship
calls Jesus accursed
The Greek word for accursed means
cursed
devoted to destruction
under Gods judgement
condemned
Jews believed Jesus was cursed because He died on the cross
his body shall not remain overnight on the tree, but you shall surely bury him that day, so that you do not defile the land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance; for he who is hanged is accursed of God.
Paul actually believed this until after his conversion
Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”),
Jesus was not cursed because He deserved judgement. He willingly bore our curse
There was also uncontrolled speech during pagan worship. Paul could be saying just because someone experiences this in an emotional pagan worship serves doesn’t mean it is coming from the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit would never dishonor Jesus. So regardless of the circumstance if a spirit diminishes Christ it is not the Holy Spirit
No one can truly call Jesus Lord without the working of the Holy Spirit revealing this to them.
They might be able to say it with there mouth but not there heart
that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.
The mouth and the heart.
Jesus is Lord, in Greek [Keer-ee-ohs] this is the same word used in the Greek old testament for YHWH, OR Yahweah
This is Lord, Master, owner and sovereign
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
Lord in most bibles is capitalized here which means YHWH
And it shall come to pass That whoever calls on the name of the Lord Shall be saved. For in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be deliverance, As the Lord has said, Among the remnant whom the Lord calls.
This is also YHWH OR Keer-ee-ohs
confessing with your heart that Jesus is Lord, Is you acknowledging
His authority
His sovereignty
His deity
The way we can decern this is by the fruits of the spirit not the gifts.
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
another way is obedience
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.
This does not mean you will never sin but your life will show a pattern of trying not to.
There will be a change in a persons life.
They will repent
They love Gods word
Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
They will love other believers
By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
They will persevere
But he who endures to the end shall be saved.
Perseverance doesn't earn salvation only Grace through faith does, but perseverance demonstrates genuine faith
The New King James Version Chapter 12
no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.
is the root.Faith
is the fruit.
Obedience
is the source.
The Holy Spirit
Jesus Christ is the Lord
Over the coarse of a Christians life time they will stumble, but as they grow in the word in the Lord there will be a noticeable change in there lives.
But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Therefore, brethren, we are debtors—not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.
For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,
