Bottom Line: Every season is an invitation to welcome King Jesus and live under His reign

Intro

Series intro→ looking at different Psalms (prayers in song form) to gain God’s wisdom for navigating the different seasons of life we find ourselves in through the reality revealed in God’s Word

Today we are wrapping up a series within the series… Psalm 22, 23, 24 are considered messianic Psalms (psalms that find their true meaning in pointing to Jesus)... An incredible trilogy that speaks to three important truths about Jesus…. 22) suffering Savior… 23) good Shepherd, 24) Sovereign King

Here is the reality that is going to be revealed today as we navigate through Psalm 24… I brought a chair with me… Throne Illustration (being in charge)… Psalm 24 reveals that there is battle happening for the throne of our lives in the spiritual realm… and seasons play a major role in the fight…

Truth

Psalm 24→ historical background→ 2 Samuel 6 and 1 Chronicles 15-16→ david is bring the Ark of the Covenant into the newly conquered city of Jerusalem… He had reclaimed the city from the jebusites and now God’s presence was going to reside in the same city as King David… David wants Israel to be established by God’s throne, not his own… It is here we find this prayer/praise breakout among the people as God enters the city

Vv. 1-2) Recognize the one who owns everything

David wants his people to know who is the rightful oner of everything… Points back to Genesis 1→ nothing is created outside the ownership of God… He is the one who brought order from chaos… It is a truth that demands a responds… will you recognize God as the rightful owner of everything? You don’t own anything… not even your own life

Vv. 3-6) Receive the King's Blessings

David asks who can approach the presence of God? Who can reside in such a holy place?

Hands→ Actions/Behaviors, Hearts→ intentions/motivations… David says only those who are obedient to God with unselfish motives… Those are the ones who can receive the blessing of salvation from the King

Vv. 7-10) Respond to the coming King

Gates are personified because there is a greater message being proclaimed here… metaphor for the people to ponder…Gates→ represent the very lives of the people participating in the procession… Ancient doors→ doors to the eternal throne

David was not hitting the garage door opener to the city through song…. He was inviting the crowd to respond appropriately to the King by welcoming the King into the kingdom that is already his…. To His rightful place… the eternal throne… His throne

Psalm 24 is proclaiming the coming of an eternal king that is reigning already and inviting the people to respond→ there is an amazing truth revealed to us once we can identify who this King is

Matthew 21:8-9→ listen to the scene→ so similar to Psalm 24 that the Jewish audience would have remembered the psalm as they were participating in the procession… but it was not just this Psalm they remembered… Quoted another Psalm…

Psalm 118:25-26→ Hosanna→ Lord save us… in Matthew 21 we see these two Psalms collide together and reveal what the psalms where pointing to… a real life moment and a real life person→ imagery of Psalm 24 and the declaration of the identity of the saving one who will reign forever… Jesus! Both Psalms point to Jesus as King and, in turn, we see Jesus reveal Psalm 24 in reality

Psalm 24 and King Jesus

Vv. 1-2) Jesus is the King who owns everything→ John 1:1-3 and Colossians 1:16-17

We are stewards, not owners

Vv. 3-6) Jesus is the King who blesses→ 2 Corinthians 5:21

He is the one who saves through His own righteousness… we cant save ourselves

Vv. 7-10) Jesus is the true King worthy of the throne→ Romans 6:12-14

nothing/noone has a right to sit on the throne and reign over our lives except Jesus

Jesus is the King we should welcome in and live under His reign… He is the only rightful King… everything else is false…counterfeit

Application

But here is what I know through God’s Word and life experience… with life comes different seasons… with every season comes a counterfeit King wanting to take the place of King Jesus

Seasons→ Kings (go to the chair)

waiting/uncertainty→ Control, success→ Pride, temptation→ Self, blessing→ Comfort, failure→Shame, confusion→ Fear, relationship/marriage→ Significant Other/Spouse, academics/atheletics/parenting/grandparenting→ Performance

Psalm 24 teaches us that the throne is already claimed… there is only one King… Jesus…. Everything else is counterfeit and has no power to actually dethrone Him…

Psalm 24 also gives us the blueprint for welcoming Him and living under His reign…

Three steps of welcoming and living under the reign of King Jesus

Vv. 1-2) Recognize who reigns→ all belongs to Jesus… confess that

Vv. 3-6) Receive the offer of the King→ only through faith in the work of Christ can one stand in the presence of God

Vv. 7-10) Respond appropriately to the King→ allow the one true King to reign… surrender… listen to His commands…. Build your life on His ways… they are better

Counterfeit King vs King Jesus

Control→ take matters into your own hands→ I have plans/purposes for you

Pride→ you won’t fail→ I will not fail you

Self→ Do what feels right in your own sight→ My way leads to abundant life

Comfort→ you can indulge in what you have→ I will be your treasure… you have a mission

Shame→ you’ll never be enough→ i have adopted you and call you enough

Fear→ the worst is yet to come→ best is yet to come

Significant other/Spouse→ purpose is to satisfy you→ I satisfy… purpose is to proclaim the gospel

Performance→ your worth what you produce→ your worth my very life

What king is knocking on your door this season? → dont open the gate to a counterfeit king
