FROM CARNAL TO KINGDOM: MATURING IN CHRIST

WEEK 6 — "BREAKING GENERATIONAL CARNALITY"

Primary Scriptures: Ezekiel 18:1–4; 2 Corinthians 5:17

Supporting Scriptures: Exodus 20:5–6; Romans 8:29; Ephesians 4:22–24; Galatians 5:1

I. Behavioral Aim

By the end of this lesson, participants will understand that while they may inherit patterns, they are not condemned to repeat them. Through Christ, believers can break cycles of carnality and begin establishing a new spiritual legacy.

II. Introduction

Have you ever caught yourself saying...
"I'm just like my daddy."
"My whole family has a bad temper."
"That's just how we are."
Many of us inherit more than eye color and facial features.
We inherit attitudes.
We inherit ways of handling conflict.
We inherit habits.
We inherit responses to pain.
Sometimes we inherit unhealthy spiritual patterns.
The Bible teaches that while sin affects generations, Jesus Christ gives every believer the opportunity to begin a new generation.
You may have been born into dysfunction...
But you were born again into the Kingdom.

III. Background

A. Ezekiel 18

Israel believed they were suffering because of their parents' sins.
They quoted the proverb:
"The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge."
God rejects the excuse.
Every individual is responsible for how they respond to Him.
The past may influence you...
It does not have to define you.

B. 2 Corinthians 5

Paul declares:
"If anyone is in Christ..."
Not some people.
Not pastors only.
Not mature Christians only.
Anyone.
"...he is a new creation."
Salvation changes our identity.
Discipleship changes our habits.

Key Truth

Being born again means God gives us the power to stop passing down carnality and start passing down Christlikeness.

IV. Relevant Question

How do I recognize unhealthy spiritual patterns that have been passed to me, and how do I replace them with Kingdom patterns?

V. Body

POINT 1 — We Inherit More Than DNA

Ezekiel 18:1–4

Every family develops patterns.
Some are healthy.
Some are destructive.
Examples include:
Anger
Addiction
Pride
Fear
Gossip
Bitterness
Emotional isolation
Poor stewardship
Spiritual inconsistency
Children often learn what they repeatedly observe.

Teaching Emphasis

Patterns learned in childhood often become habits in adulthood unless intentionally challenged.

Discussion

What unhealthy behaviors become "normal" simply because they were common in a family?

POINT 2 — Christ Breaks Every Excuse

Ezekiel 18:19–20

God refuses to allow Israel to blame previous generations.
Notice:
God acknowledges influence.
But He rejects inevitability.
There is a difference.
Influence explains behavior.
It does not excuse behavior.

Teaching Emphasis

Maturity begins the moment excuses end.

Discussion

Have you ever justified a wrong attitude by saying...
"That's just how I was raised."

POINT 3 — Salvation Gives You a New Identity

2 Corinthians 5:17

Paul says:
Old things...
Passed away.
Notice...
He doesn't say old memories disappear.
Old temptations disappear.
Old struggles disappear.
He says...
Your identity changes.
You no longer belong to your old nature.
You belong to Christ.

Teaching Emphasis

Stop introducing yourself by your past.
Start identifying yourself by your position in Christ.

Reflection

What labels have you accepted that God never gave you?

POINT 4 — Spiritual Transformation Requires Intentional Replacement

Ephesians 4:22–24

Paul gives three actions.
Put off...
Be renewed...
Put on...
Every unhealthy pattern must be replaced.
For example:
Replace fear with faith.
Replace anger with self-control.
Replace bitterness with forgiveness.
Replace gossip with encouragement.
Replace worry with prayer.

Teaching Emphasis

Deliverance begins instantly.
Transformation continues daily.

Discussion

Which unhealthy habit do you most need God to replace?

POINT 5 — You Can Start a New Legacy

Galatians 5:1

Romans 8:29

God never intended transformation to stop with you.
Your children...
Grandchildren...
Church family...
Community...
Should inherit something different because you followed Christ.
Imagine generations saying...
"My grandmother taught me to pray."
"My father showed me integrity."
"My mother loved the Word."
"My pastor modeled holiness."
Kingdom maturity is never just personal.
It becomes generational.

Teaching Emphasis

God doesn't just save people.
He changes family trees.

Discussion

What legacy do you want your family and your church family to remember?

VI. Summary

The enemy wants us to believe...
"I'll always be this way."
God says...
"You are a new creation."
The enemy points backward.
God calls us forward.
The flesh repeats cycles.
The Spirit creates new ones.

VII. Spiritual Growth Challenge

This week:
1. Identify one unhealthy family or personal pattern.
Write it down.
Pray over it daily.
2. Find one Scripture that confronts that pattern.
Memorize it.
3. Practice one new Kingdom habit every day.
Consistency creates new patterns.

VIII. Weekly Memory Verse

2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

IX. Closing Prayer

"Father, thank You that our past does not determine our future. Thank You that through Jesus Christ we are new creations. Reveal every unhealthy pattern we have accepted as normal, and give us the courage to replace those patterns with Your truth. Let our homes, our church, and future generations reflect Your character. May we leave a legacy of holiness, faithfulness, and spiritual maturity. In Jesus' name, Amen."
