Parable of the Wheat and the Tares (Weeds).

Text: Matthew 13:24-30, 36-43.

Context: Jesus’ Parables Assume that the Kingdom has Come (Matthew 12:28). Jesus preached the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:1-23; Mark 4:1-20; Luke 8:4-15). It is helpful to read Parable of the Wheat and Tares in light of the Parable of the Sower. The Parable of the Sower teaches that not everyone will be receptive to the King and His Kingdom. The Parable of the Wheat and Tares teach how the citizens of the Kingdom exist in the world with the lost.

Main Point of the Sermon:

There are only two types of people (wheat & tares). We should examine ourselves and strive to be fruitful.

1. Two Seeds (Matthew 13:19, 24-25).

The Parable of the Sower teaches the seed is the Word of the Kingdom (Matthew 13:19)

The truth of Jesus Christ produces Christians.

The ways of the world products non-Christians.

Which message do you believe?

2. Two Plants Produced by the Seeds (Matthew 13:38-39).

Wheat - Common crop of land of Israel. Offered at Feast of Weeks (Pentecost).

Weeds - Darnell - a poisonous crop that looks identical to wheat except when it is time to harvest.

Both grow together in the world. (Matthew 13:28-30).

Known by their Fruit (Matthew 7:20).

3. Two Different Fates (Matthew 13:30, 40-43).

There will be a harvest when Jesus returns (Matthew 13:30). Don’t allow the presence of tares in your life affect your fruitfulness.

The Barn - Those who have trusted Christ and have offered their lives up to God, as an offering, to be used for His purpose, get to enjoy God’s abundant blessings.

The Fire - The lost who rejected Christ are destined for eternal torment.

Which will be your fate?

Conclusion:

Because there are 2 types of people, we should examine ourselves. Even if you are a Christian, you should desire to bring forth a fruitful harvest.
