Week 3 — What Makes a Healthy Church?

Acts 2:41–47

Big Idea

Healthy churches are devoted to God and devoted to one another.

Goal of Today's Lesson

By the end of today, I want us to answer one question:

If Acts 2 happened today, would our youth ministry look anything like it?

Not because we're trying to copy a church... But because we want to become the kind of people God can use like He used them.

Introduction

Ask everyone:

"What do you think makes a church great?"

Take a few answers.

Most people would probably say:

Good preaching

Good worship

Lots of people

A nice building

Fun events

Good coffee

Then say:

"None of those things are bad...but that's not what Luke says made the first church beautiful."

Acts 2 is the very beginning of the New Testament church.

Jesus has ascended. The Holy Spirit has come. Peter has preached. Three thousand people have just trusted Christ.

Luke now pauses the story.

Almost like he says,

"Before I tell you what the church DID...let me show you WHO they were."

And honestly...

Acts 2:42-47 is one of the most beautiful pictures of the church in the entire Bible.

Not because everything was perfect...

But because Jesus had completely changed these people.

41 So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added to them. 42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and signs were being performed through the apostles. 44 Now all the believers were together and held all things in common. 45 They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with joyful and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. Every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

Tell everyone:

"As we read, I want you to look for one phrase that keeps repeating."

(Devoted.)

Background

This church had almost nothing.

No church building.

No youth room.

No worship band.

No social media.

No programs.

No paid staff except eventually the apostles.

Yet...

God grew it faster than almost any church in history.

Why?

Because they weren't devoted to church...

They were devoted to Christ.

And because they loved Christ...

they loved each other.

Discussion

The Most important word of these verses was what?

Devoted.

Ask:

"What's something you're devoted to?"

Sports?

Gaming?

Music?

Your girlfriend or boyfriend?

Family?

What does devotion look like?

You naturally make time for it.

Nobody has to force you.

That's exactly what Luke is saying.

Nobody had to beg these people to love each other.

It overflowed from hearts changed by Jesus.

Point 1: They Were Devoted to God

Read Acts 2:42

LEts notice some things here

The Apostles' Teaching

They loved God's Word.

Remember...

They didn't all own Bibles.

The New Testament wasn't finished yet.

So when the apostles taught...

people listened.

They wanted to learn.

They wanted to grow.

Ask:

Why do you think learning God's Word mattered so much to them?

Prayer

Prayer wasn't an emergency button.

It was their lifestyle.

Imagine if every difficult situation in our youth group was met with prayer before opinions.

Prayer before gossip.

Prayer before frustration.

Prayer before social media.

Worship

Verse 46 says they praised God.

Not because life was easy.

Many of these believers were about to face persecution.

Yet they still worshipped.

Their joy wasn't based on circumstances.

It was based on Jesus.

Discussion

Ask:

If someone watched your life...Would they say you're devoted to God? Or just that you go to church?

Point 2: They Were Devoted to One Another

This might be the most beautiful part.

Read verses 44-46.

Notice the words:

Together.

Common.

Sharing.

Breaking bread.

House to house.

One accord.

These weren't strangers sitting in rows.

They were family.

Church wasn't just Sunday.

Life was shared.

They ate together.

Prayed together.

Served together.

Cried together.

Celebrated together.

Historical Context

Remember...

Many of these believers had lost family relationships because they followed Jesus.

Some had been rejected.

Some had been kicked out of the synagogue.

The church became their family.

And they acted like it.

Campfire

Think about a campfire.

One stick burns...

but not very long.

Put twenty logs together...

the fire becomes much bigger.

Now pull one log away.

It begins cooling almost immediately.

That's Christians.

God never intended us to follow Him alone.

Discussion

Ask:

What would it look like if our youth group actually acted like family instead of just classmates?

Take answers.

Point 3: Their Love Was So Real That Everyone Noticed

Read verse Acts 2:47.

Acts 2:47 CSB

47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. Every day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved.

They had favor with all the people.

Notice...

Luke never says they tried to impress people.

People simply noticed.

Because genuine love is attractive.

People are starving for authentic community.

Our schools are full of loneliness.

People have hundreds of followers...

and almost no real friends.

Imagine if students walked into youth group and immediately thought...

"I've never seen people love each other like this."

That's exactly what happened in Acts.

Application

How Do We Become This Kind of Youth Group?

I think it starts with unity.

Everyone wants unity.

But unity doesn't happen accidentally.

Unity has to be protected.

Paul says in Ephesians 4:3

"Making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit."

Notice...

Unity isn't created.

It's protected.

So how do we protect it?

1. Forgive Quickly

Every church has imperfect people.

Every youth group has imperfect people.

You will get your feelings hurt.

Someone won't invite you.

Someone will forget you.

Someone may even gossip about you.

If we wait until we "feel like forgiving"...

we'll never have unity.

Healthy churches forgive continually.

Just like Jesus continually forgives us.

Ask:

Is there anyone you've been holding a grudge against?

2. Pray Together Consistently

One of the biggest reasons this church stayed united...

was because they continually prayed together.

Prayer changes people.

Prayer softens hearts.

It's hard to stay angry with someone you're genuinely praying for.

Imagine if every small group ended with students praying for each other instead of rushing home.

Imagine if students prayed together before football games...

before tests...

before difficult conversations.

Prayer creates unity.

3. Fellowship Outside Church

Acts says they met day after day.

Not because someone made them.

Because they wanted to.

One Wednesday a week isn't enough to build deep friendships.

Some of the best discipleship happens:

Getting food.

Playing basketball.

Fishing.

Coffee.

Supporting each other's games.

Birthday parties.

Just doing life together.

Church isn't an event.

It's a family.

4. Pursue Peace with Humility

This might be the hardest one.

Romans 12 says,

"If possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone."

Humility asks:

"What can I do to restore this relationship?"

Pride asks:

"They owe me an apology."

Healthy churches don't wait.

They take the first step.

Sometimes you'll apologize...

even if you weren't completely wrong.

Not because you're weak.

Because peace matters more than pride.

Jesus took the first step toward us.

We can take the first step toward others.
