James

Who is James?

. He is the half brother of Jesus Christ.

Matthew 13:55 “Is not this the carpenter’s son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?”

James is the biological son of Joseph and Mary.

.He was a unbeliever turned believer

Mark 3:21 “And when his family heard it, they went out to seize him, for they were saying, “He is out of his mind.””

1 Corinthians 15:7 “Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles.”

Acts 1:14 “All these with one accord were devoting themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.”

. He is a leader of the church of Jerusalem

Galatians 2:9 “and when James and Cephas and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given to me, they gave the right hand of fellowship to Barnabas and me, that we should go to the Gentiles and they to the circumcised.”

Acts 15:13–15 “After they finished speaking, James replied, “Brothers, listen to me. Simeon has related how God first visited the Gentiles, to take from them a people for his name. And with this the words of the prophets agree, just as it is written,”

James 1:1 “James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, To the twelve tribes in the Dispersion: Greetings.”

James is writing this letter to the 12 tribes in tern he is writing this letter to the early Jewish believers. The stoning of Stephen triggered a systematic State Sanctioned campaign of terror led by the religious authorities in Jerusalem. It Marked a legal shift from warnings to to aggressive physical removal. Eradicating the teaching of the name Jesus.

Even through the dispersion of the early believers the Gospel continues.

What truths is James revealing to us in this first chapter?

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

Just like in Acts 14 and also 17 persecution would follow the believers. John 16:33 “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.””

The flight or fight response it a natural thing that happens when our activate our bodies survival mode often caused by physical Danger and or emotional stress.

As believers we also have a response to trials we can let it draw us closer to the father or if it’s not drawing us closer it will eventually pull us away.

James is using this letter to get the believers to Recognize a new response to the persecution that was happening. He was asking the Jewish believers to recognize the opportunities that this persecution brought to build their faith.

Romans 5:3–5 “Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.”

Faith = Wisdom Doubt = instability

James 1:5–7 “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord;”

James is telling us to ask God for Wisdom. He is telling the believer also that it takes this Wisdom given by God to recognize the Joy of persecution.

As readers we can see these verse in James and not begin to think of King Solomon as he ask for wisdom from God to lead his people. But the wisdom James is wanting to reader to request is more like in Daniel as he is facing extreme persecution to the point of death He ask for Gods wisdom to interpret the asking dream.

Daniel 2:20–23 “Daniel answered and said: “Blessed be the name of God forever and ever, to whom belong wisdom and might. He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding; he reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with him. To you, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for you have given me wisdom and might, and have now made known to me what we asked of you, for you have made known to us the king’s matter.”” Matthew 7:9–11 “Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!”

Humility = strength

James 1:9–11 “Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.” 1. The Trial of Displacement and Homelessness • Loss of Security: Believers were forced to flee their homes in Jerusalem.

• Foreign Living: They had to rebuild their lives from scratch as refugees in strange, often hostile Greco-Roman cities. • Social Isolation: As Jewish converts to Christianity, they were rejected by mainstream Jewish synagogues and mistrusted by Gentile communities.

2. Extreme Economic Poverty • Stripped of Wealth: Fleeing persecution meant most believers left behind their properties, land, and businesses. • Day-Laborer Reality: The Christian communities were overwhelmingly comprised of the working poor or the utterly destitute. They struggled daily just to find enough food and clothing.

3. Legal and Financial Oppression

• Ruthless Landowners: Decades of aggressive taxation by the Roman Empire and local aristocrats had consolidated land into feudal-style estates. Small farmers were forced to work as tenant laborers. • Stolen Wages: Rich landowners frequently withheld the daily wages of these poor laborers, knowing they had no political power to fight back (James 5:4). Rigged Courtrooms: Wealthy elites regularly dragged these impoverished Christians into corrupt legal systems to seize whatever little property they had left (James 2:6).

James is saying that lowly boast when they are brought up and the rich boast when they are brought low. It’s this equaling out bringing equality.

Proverbs 22:2 “The rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the Maker of them all.”

Desire = Temptation

James 1:12–15 “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him. Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.” 1 Corinthians 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.”

James 4:7 “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”

Matthew 26:41 “Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.””

Ephesians 6:11 “Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.”

Psalm 119:11 “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”

Goodness of God

Believer = First fruit

James 1:16–18 “Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

The word for first fruit in Hebrew is Bikkurim the root of this word is Bekhor which means first born in the Jewish culture the first born son or animal belong specifically to God When used it agricultural we are talking about the first fruits of a Harvest that is promised to come.

Faith Forces Action

James 1:19–27 “Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing. If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”

Romans 8:3–4 “For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”
