Healing Words - Week 5

Main idea:

Confession and prayer within the body of Christ bring spiritual and relational healing.

James 5:13-20 teaches us to confess our sins to one another, breaking the power of secrecy and shame, and experiencing God’s grace in community.

Through prayer and openness, believers can find restoration and help others who have wandered from the truth.

By embracing vulnerability and praying for one another, we create a space for healing and forgiveness to flourish.

Prayer:

“Lord, help us to embrace the healing power of confession, bringing our struggles and sins into the light so that we may experience Your grace and restoration.

May we be a community that prays for one another with love and gentleness, trusting in Your power to heal and renew.”

Introduction

Welcome back church!

Today we finish up our 5-week sermon series, Words Matter.

As you’ve probably guessed by now, we’ve been talking a lot about words, the Word, and why it all matters.

You also know that words have incredible power.

They can build up or tear down, comfort or wound.

In our passage today, James reminds us that words can also heal, not just through encouragement, but through confession and prayer.

In a world that often hides its brokenness, James calls us to something deeper—healing that comes when we bring our sins and struggles into the light, confessing them to one another and to God.

Today, we’ll explore how confession isn’t just about admitting wrong doing, but about receiving the healing grace of God, both spiritually and relationally as we bring things into the light, and the light of Christ heals us.

The Power of Prayer in Every Circumstance

(James 5:13-15)

"Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord." (James 5:13-14)

James begins this section by reminding us that prayer should be our first response in every situation.

Whether we are suffering, rejoicing, or facing illness, our instinct should be to turn to God in praise and in prayer.

We’re reminded here that prayer isn’t just a last resort; it’s the foundation of our relationship with Him.

But what’s interesting is that James doesn’t stop at individual prayer.

When he addresses sickness, he tells believers to call the elders of the church to pray over them, emphasizing the power of communal prayer.

Healing is often found in community, in the body of Christ coming together to lift one another up before the Lord.

In moments of struggle, do you go to God in prayer or try to handle things on your own?

James urges us to bring every circumstance—good or bad—before God.

Whether in times of joy or hardship, remember that prayer connects you to the One who holds all things in His hands.

Prayer is a lifeline, a first response, and our best weapon in times of turmoil, chaos, and brokenness.

Prayer connects our words to Jesus,

the Word made flesh (John 1).

Consider the story in Mark 2, where the friends of the paralyzed man bring him to Jesus.

They literally carry him to where Jesus is, because they know he can’t get there on his own.

Their faith led to his physical and spiritual healing.

In the same way, when we come together in prayer for one another, we become conduits of God’s healing grace… And sometimes we need a little help from our friends.

The Healing Power of Confession

(James 5:16)

"Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective." (James 5:16)

Here, James takes us deeper into what it means to experience healing—not just physical healing, but spiritual and relational healing through confession and community.

Confession is more than just admitting our sins to God in private.

James urges believers to confess their sins to each other.

Why?

Because sin thrives in darkness, and when we keep our struggles hidden, they can fester and grow.

Confession, on the other hand, brings sin into the light where God’s grace and forgiveness can flow freely.

James is speaking to the kind of vulnerability and openness that strengthens the church.

When we are willing to be honest with one another about our sins, weaknesses, and failures, it creates space for healing.

God’s forgiveness, offered through the prayers of the community, brings restoration.

This is the way of God, and it’s beautiful in action!

Pastor - Share here about a time when you experienced this communal healing, prayer, confession, etc…

Confession between believers breaks the power of isolation and secrecy that sin often holds over us.

When we confess our sins to one another, it helps remove shame, build trust, and deepen our connection with the body of Christ.

Ask yourself:

Is there something you need to bring into the light?

Are there trusted believers in your life with whom you can share your struggles?

Are there people who know you well enough to challenge you when you are off course, for the purpose of bringing you closer to God and healing?

Biblical Illustration:

Think about David’s confession in Psalm 51.

10th verse - Create in Me a Clean Heart

After being confronted by Nathan the prophet about his sin with Bathsheba, David pours out his heart to God in repentance.

He doesn’t hide or minimize his sin but fully confesses it, and through that confession, he finds forgiveness and healing.

David’s example shows us that confession isn’t about humiliation; it’s about restoration.

Restoring the Wandering Soul

(James 5:19-20)

"My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins." (James 5:19-20)

James closes this passage with a powerful reminder of our responsibility toward one another.

If we see a brother or sister wandering from the truth, it’s our job to help bring them back.

The language here suggests more than just a gentle nudge—it’s about pursuing those who are lost and helping them return to the grace of God.

It’s a continuation of the restoration we read about in James 5:13-16.

This is where the power of confession, prayer, and community come together.

When someone confesses their sin or shares their struggles, it’s an opportunity for the church to extend grace and help restore them.

We are called to be instruments of God’s grace to one another, helping others to recover from a multitude of sins through the power of His love.

Who in your life is struggling or wandering from the faith?

How might God be calling you to reach out to them in love, offering the healing words of grace and restoration?

It’s not about judgment, but about gently helping them find their way back to the truth and the community of faith.

In Luke 15, Jesus tells the parable of the lost sheep.

The shepherd leaves the ninety-nine to find the one who has wandered away.

This is the heart of God, and it should be our heart as well—to pursue those who have wandered and to rejoice when they are restored.

As we confess our sins to one another and pray for each other, we participate in the ministry of reconciliation, restoring relationships with God and with each other.

Conclusion

James 5:13-20 shows us that healing comes in many forms—through prayer, through confession, and through community.

But the heart of this passage is the power of honesty and openness within the body of Christ.

When we confess our sins to one another, we experience not only forgiveness but healing in ways we might never expect.

Here are a few ways to put this into practice:

Cultivate a Habit of Confession:

Don’t wait until things are overwhelming.

Make confession a regular part of your spiritual life.

Whether it’s with a trusted friend, a pastor, or a small group, share your struggles and ask for prayer. (thursday night prayer)

Pray for One Another:

When someone confesses their sin to you, don’t just listen—pray for them.

The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

Your prayers can be a source of healing and strength for others.

Seek to Restore, Not Judge:

When you see a brother or sister wandering, approach them with grace and love.

We are called to restore one another gently, helping each other find our way back to the truth.

Be Open to Healing:

Healing often comes in ways we don’t expect.

Be open to how God might bring healing into your life—whether through confession, prayer, or the encouragement of others.

By following James’ teaching, we can build a community marked by authenticity, grace, and healing, where the words we speak to one another have the power to bring life, forgiveness, and restoration…

This is where we see the power in and through our words..

Through prayer and confession, repentance and restoration.

This is why Words Matter…

This is where the rubber meets the road as they say.

As we reflect on all we’ve learned the past 5 weeks, let’s commit to being a people who are more intentional with our words and actions.

Let’s commit to prayer, praise, and restoration.

Let’s pray together.

Salvation:

The Word of God says in: John 3:16

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Romans 10:13 NKJV

For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”

Communion

Communion stands as one of Christianity’s most ancient practices, rooted in the Passover meal but transformed into a distinctively Christian observance centered on Christ’s body and blood.

1 The practice involves consuming bread and wine (or juice) to commemorate Jesus’ sacrificial death.

2 Jesus himself instituted it, and the early church maintained it as a regular practice according to apostolic instruction.

No matter your belief Communion stands as one of Christianity’s most ancient practices, rooted in the Passover meal but transformed into a distinctively Christian observance centered on Christ’s body and blood.

I want to take a few moments to give you the opportunity to ask forgiveness of any sin in your life.

Let us pray over the elements (Cross Exposed) in the name of the father, the son, and the Holy Ghost

23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;

24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” (take bread)

25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” (Take Cup)

26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.

Intercede for local believers who face severe restrictions, imprisonment, or violence for their faith.

Humanitarian Crises:

Pray for relief from extreme poverty, human trafficking, and the oppression of women and children.

Pray for the protection of frontline missionaries, effective local church planting, and the translation of scriptures.

Today, we focus our prayers for the nation on asking for unity to overcome the division, wisdom for the government leaders, and a nationwide spiritual revival.

National unity and healing: pray for reconciliation where division exists, asking that the nation learns to live together peacefully despite differences.

Government and local leaders: intercede for wisdom, godly counsel, and discernment for all elected officials (local and national) to make righteous decisions

Spiritual revival: pray for a national to return to godly values, with a focus on repentance and the desire to seek truth.
