Intro to series.
Intro to series.
Orange and Cupcake.
prayer for holiness.
misconception of morality only.
Actually means set apart, dedicated and special for special purpose.
We want a holy church with holy people. Now that does not mean perfection. But it is living in the reality of what christ has done.
1 Peter 1:14–16 ESV
As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
1 Peter
Ephesians 4:1 ESV
I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,
Bible doesn't ask or suggest us to be holy it commands us to be holy.
Devotional Holiness.
Luke 10:27 ESV
And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”
“The Bible says that God is holy, holy, holy. Not that He is merely holy, or even holy, holy. He is holy, holy, holy. The Bible never says that God is love, love, love, or mercy, mercy, mercy, or wrath, wrath, wrath, or justice, justice, justice. It does say that He is holy, holy, holy, the whole earth is full of His glory. - R.C. Sproul
So the first thing for us is to live a holy life is to focus on his holiness.
To love him and worship him to devote ourselves to him because he is worthy.
His worthiness is key.
As we look at the different forms of worship, the ways we can live a holy life it is vital that we focus on his worth. Often times our mind goes to our desire or ability not to his worth.
Focusing in on our desire and ability will kill or limit our holiness. it will limit or kill our worship.
Focusing on him, his holiness, his worth changes everything. It changes our desire it changes our ability.
So first we simply look at devotional holiness:
Devotional holiness are things solely focused on him or directed at him. Now the next three; personal, relational and missional are all also for the glory of God and ultimately are all done in worship of him, but the application of it are not solely directed at him. Personal holiness is about our repentance and purity which is directed at us but it is for the glory of God. And so it is with the next two relational and missional.
So devotional holiness, is praise and thanksgiving, worship and adoration of him, humility before him. Thinking or meditating on him and verbally worshiping him.
So practically these things look like prayer that is in praising him. learning about him, so learning from the word about him, trusting his scriptures. journaling about his work and word, or singing songs to him, raising our hands, kneeling before him.
Now the bible makes it abundantly clear that he is not after our physical actions but our heart. So there is the temptation to say well he has my heart so I don’t have to worship him physically.
We don’t see this any where in scripture. And its kinda like a husband saying i said i love you why do i need to say it again.
“When I saw him i fell at his feet as though dead.”
“Daniel sees the vision of Jesus, he falls to his face as though dead”
Revelation 7:11 ESV
And all the angels were standing around the throne and around the elders and the four living creatures, and they fell on their faces before the throne and worshiped God,
Genesis 17:13 ESV
both he who is born in your house and he who is bought with your money, shall surely be circumcised. So shall my covenant be in your flesh an everlasting covenant.
Genesis 17:3 ESV
Then Abram fell on his face. And God said to him,
Nehemiah 8:6 ESV
And Ezra blessed the Lord, the great God, and all the people answered, “Amen, Amen,” lifting up their hands. And they bowed their heads and worshiped the Lord with their faces to the ground.
1 Chronicles 29:20 ESV
Then David said to all the assembly, “Bless the Lord your God.” And all the assembly blessed the Lord, the God of their fathers, and bowed their heads and paid homage to the Lord and to the king.
Joshua, Ezekiel, Jesus even modeled this.
