NOTE:
I would like to take a minute and recognize Andrew Arbogast.
We had the pleasure of being here for his baptism and we want to just take a moment
and have him stand up and let him know that his church family loves him and will stand with him.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Engage [Approx. 3 Min]
* The First Button Metaphor:
Picture getting dressed in the morning when you're in a hurry.
You grab a button-down shirt, start at the top, and quickly work your way down.
But when you hit the last button, you realize something is terribly off—the entire shirt is crooked, pulling awkwardly at the seams.
* The Root Cause:
No matter how carefully you aligned buttons 2 through 6, every single one ended up misaligned for one simple reason: you got the very first button wrong.
* The Life Application:
We’ve all experienced this in everyday life.
You try so hard to fix the surface-level problems—organizing your calendar, tweaking your budget, managing your schedule, or trying to stay calm in traffic—yet despite all your effort, life still feels crooked, tense, and completely out of alignment.
TRANSITION TO TENSION:
On Wednesday evening, we're studying the book of Exodus and we're on chapter 20, the Ten Commandments.
Now, we often view the Ten Commandments as ten separate, unrelated rules on a stone checklist.
But what if we've been treating them like a bunch of bottom buttons—trying to fix our behavior and our relationships—while completely ignoring the first button?
2. Tension [Approx. 2.5 Min]
* The Friction We All Feel:
Why do our horizontal relationships pull apart at the seams?
Why do marriages struggle, workplace conflicts explode, and personal peace feel so fragile?
We spend all our energy trying to fix the symptoms on the surface—managing anger, dealing with resentment, or trying to stop comparing ourselves to others.
* The Exhausting Cycle:
When our relationships pull apart, our first instinct isn't to look at our core foundation.
We buy three self-help books, download a habit-tracker app, listen to a podcast on high-performance living, and start a new morning routine at 4:30 AM.
We will try literally everything on earth to fix the friction in our lives, but the shirt is still crooked.
* The Underlying Conflict:
When we prioritize our own control, comfort, or pride above everything else, we inevitably end up using the people around you to get what we want.
When we hear 'false gods,' we picture ancient people bowing down to a golden calf in the desert, and we think, 'Well, at least I’ve never carved a statue in my living room.'
No, we don't carve golden calves anymore—we just finance them at 7% interest for 72 months and park them in the driveway!’
There are multiple things that people today put before God.
* The Fundamental Failure:
If you don't have the first commandment nailed down, the rest of them simply won't line up.
You will never be able to keep them in your own strength.
And even if you manage to force outward compliance, without the First Commandment, those rules are just empty secular morality.
They mean nothing if they don't point directly back to God being your God and you being His beloved.
TRANSITION TO TRUTH:
Before God addresses our behavior toward our neighbor on the horizontal level, He establishes the foundational reality of His grace and His exclusive place in our hearts vertically.
If you have your Bibles or your Bible app, go ahead and turn to Exodus chapter 20, and keep a finger in Psalm 81 as well...
3. Truth [Approx. 14–15 Min]
Part 1: Grace Before Law—The Prologue of Deliverance
And God spoke all these words, saying,
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
-------------------
I am the Lord your God,
who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.
------------------------------
* The Gospel Foundation:
Notice how God opens the Ten Commandments in Exodus 20 and how Asaph re-anchors the covenant in Psalm 81. Deliverance always precedes the commandment.
God does not demand allegiance from strangers to earn their freedom;
He redeems His children first and then gives them the Law to protect their freedom.
In Egypt, Pharaoh demanded performance before providing rest—demanding bricks without straw.
But God rescues us by grace before He ever asks us to walk in obedience.
* Relationship Over Rules:
God doesn't start with a checklist of moral duties; He starts by declaring a relationship: "I am the LORD *your* God."
This distinction is critical. Without this foundation, the commandments are reduced to mere moralism.
Morality says, "Do these things to be good."
The Gospel says, "You are my beloved, rescued child—now live in the freedom of who you belong to."
If your obedience doesn't spring from belonging to Him, it's just behavior modification that will eventually collapse under pressure.
* The Wesleyan Anchor (Prevenient Grace & Article 7):
God always initiates the rescue before He commands the response.
In the Church of the Nazarene Manual, Article 7 (Prevenient Grace) highlights the grace of God that is freely given to everyone prior to salvation.
Left to ourselves, we are completely trapped in spiritual Egypt, bound by sin, and unable to reach for God.
Prevenient grace is God stepping in first—softening our hearts, pursuing us in our spiritual captivity, and opening our eyes—so we actually have the ability to say "yes" to Jesus and walk into freedom.
TRANSITION TO PART 2:
"Now, once God establishes that grace has already freed us, He moves to protect that freedom. He sets down the first table of the Law—the vertical boundaries that govern our relationship with Him. But pay close attention to how these first four commandments work together..."
Part 2: The Vertical Foundation—Commandments Toward God (Commandments 1–4)
“You shall have no other gods before me.
“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments.
“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates.
------------------------------
* Commandment 1 as the Goal:
The First Commandment ("No other gods before me") is the ultimate target—a heart wholly devoted to the Creator, relying on Him as our sole source of living water and spiritual strength.
* The Unbreakable Rule:
Let's be explicitly clear: if you don't get Commandment 1 nailed down, Commandments 2 through 10 will never line up.
You can try to stop worshipping idols, try to watch your language, and try to take a Sabbath rest, but without a heart anchored exclusively in God, you won't be able to keep them.
They will feel like heavy, legalistic chains rather than life-giving guardrails.
* Commandments 2–4 as the Guardrails:
Commandments 2 through 4 are not separate rules floating on their own; they are designed precisely to help us protect and keep the First Commandment:
* Commandment 2 (No Graven Images):
Keeps us from reshaping God into a manageable image we can manipulate or control, ensuring He remains supreme as He truly is rather than a god made in our likeness.
Now, when Exodus says God is a jealous God, we tend to think of petty human insecurity—like a guy who gets mad because his girlfriend looked across the room.
That’s not God.
God’s jealousy isn’t insecure; it’s protective
. It’s like a faithful husband who isn't about to share his wife with the next-door neighbor.
God loves you too much to share you with a dead idol that can't love you back.
* Commandment 3 (Honoring His Name):
Keeps us from reducing God to a tool, a slogan, or a lucky charm for our self-centered plans, guarding His holy place in our speech, motives, and daily walk.
* Commandment 4 (Sabbath Rest):
Forces us to stop striving and rely on Him as our sole Provider, preventing our work, ambitions, financial anxiety, and constant busyness from becoming rival gods that drain our souls.
* The Wesleyan Anchor (Entire Sanctification & Article 10):
This is the Old Testament foundation for Article 10 (Entire Sanctification).
God gives us these guardrails because He wants our hearts undivided.
Sanctification is the Holy Spirit cleansing the heart of rival idols and giving us the spiritual grace to practice these boundaries so our love for God remains pure, steady, and complete.
TRANSITION TO PART 3:
"When those vertical guardrails are in place and God is sitting unchallenged on the throne of your heart, something remarkable happens on the ground level.
The way you treat the people around you begins to radically change...
Part 3: The Horizontal Flow—Commandments Toward Others (Commandments 5–10)
“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
“You shall not murder.
“You shall not commit adultery.
“You shall not steal.
“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”
---------------------
* Loving Neighbor Flowing from Loving God:
When Commandments 2–4 guard your heart to keep God first, Commandments 5–10 flow outward naturally.
Every horizontal sin is fundamentally a vertical failure:
* We murder or harbor hatred when we make our own ego or anger a god.
* We commit adultery when we look to another person rather than God to satisfy our deepest inner hunger.
* We steal, lie, or covet when we don't trust God to be our portion, assuming we must grab what belongs to others to satisfy our thirst.
* The Morality Trap:
Here is where so many people get stuck: you can try to be a "good person," refrain from stealing, be faithful in marriage, and treat your neighbors nicely... but if those actions don't flow out of Commandment 1, they are just empty secular morals.
Being a decent neighbor without surrendering your heart to God doesn't save you or satisfy your soul.
Good behavior only carries eternal meaning when it points directly back to God being your God, and you walking as His beloved child.
Without Him at the center, the rest of the commandments will eventually buckle, because you don't have the foundation to sustain them.
TRANSITION TO PART 4:
If this dual structure—vertical alignment producing horizontal love—sounds familiar, it's because Jesus took these two tables of stone and brought them into crystal clear focus...
Part 4: The Great Summary & Gospel Fulfillment
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
————————-
* The Two Tables Fulfilled in Christ:
Jesus took the Ten Commandments and summarized them into two simple directives: Love God (Commandments 1–4) and Love Neighbor (Commandments 5–10).
Jesus lived as the only One who kept both tables perfectly.
On the cross, He bore the penalty for all our broken boundaries and idolatry, restoring us to the Father so that we can live not out of rigid rule-keeping, but as His dearly loved children.
But God has set these commandments as basic guidelines, or guard rails to help keep us safe after he has saved us from sin.
TRANSITION OUT OF TRUTH (Into Application):
If the First Commandment is the foundation that holds the rest of our lives together—and Commandments 2 through 4 are the guardrails designed to keep our hearts anchored to that foundation...
why do so many of us find our horizontal lives—our marriages, our parenting, our work, our peace of mind—pulling apart at the seams?
Because we are trying to keep rules without a relationship.
We are trying to align buttons 2 through 10 while leaving the first button completely unbuttoned.
If we want to experience the true satisfaction and strength God promises, we have to evaluate three specific areas of our hearts..."
4. Application [Approx. 4.5 Min]
1. Audit the First Button (Examine Your Alignment):
* Take an honest look at your life today.
Are you exhausted from trying to force the rest of the commandments to line up when you haven't surrendered to Commandment 1?
Are you trying to fix your horizontal relationships—your marriage, your parenting, your workplace friction—while completely ignoring your vertical alignment with God?
* "When our horizontal relationships pull apart, our first instinct isn't to look at our relationship with God.
We buy three self-help books, download a habit-tracker app, listen to a podcast on high-performance living, and start a new morning routine at 4:30 AM.
We will try literally everything on earth to fix our lives before we finally stop and say, 'Lord, maybe the problem is You aren't first.'"
* Remember: attempting to keep the moral code of Scripture without having God as your God just turns faith into an exhausting self-help project.
* 2. Inspect Your Guardrails (Check Commandments 2–4):
* If Commandment 1 is the goal—a heart completely devoted to God—then Commandments 2, 3, and 4 are the daily practices that keep you there.
Where have your guardrails broken down?
* Are you fashioning false images (Commandment 2)?
Have you reduced God to a comfortable, manageable version of Himself that never challenges your lifestyle?
* Are you misusing His name (Commandment 3)?
Are you using God's name to endorse your own personal agenda, or treating your faith as a lucky charm rather than a sacred covenant?
* Have you abandoned Sabbath rest (Commandment 4)?
Is your constant busyness, striving, and refusal to rest proving that your work has become a rival god?
* 3. Invite Entire Devotion (Surrender the Heart's Altars):
* You cannot white-knuckle your way into keeping the First Commandment.
You can't just "try harder" to get your shirt buttoned button straight without the top one first.
* True transformation happens when you move from trying to keep rules to realizing you are His beloved.
Invite the Holy Spirit to perform a cleansing work in your heart.
Allow Him to expose the subtle lower case g gods and idols—approval, financial security, control, or self-autonomy—and yield your entire heart to Him, and the other commandments will naturally fall into place.
TRANSITION OUT OF APPLICATION (Into Inspiration & Response):
When you look at your life today, maybe you realize that the top button has been unbuttoned for a long time.
You’ve been trying to force your life to line up through sheer willpower, treating God's word as a list of moral obligations rather than an invitation into His love—and you're exhausted.
Here's the good news:
God doesn't stand over you with a checklist demanding that you fix yourself before you come to Him.
He comes to you in grace first—just like He did for Israel in Egypt—to rescue you, to forgive you, and to remind you that you are His beloved child.
5. Inspiration & Response Call [Approx. 4 Min]
* Stepping Across the Line:
Choosing the Lord as your only God isn't meant to be a private, hidden sentiment. Throughout scripture, when God redeemed His people out of bondage, they made a public declaration that they belonged to Him.
* Public Declarations of Covenant:
In the New Testament church, baptism and church membership are those exact public lines in the sand.
* Baptism is your declaration to the world that you have stepped out of "Egypt," that your old life of chasing false gods is buried, and that Jesus Christ is your only Savior and Lord.
* Church Membership is placing your life alongside a covenant family, saying, "We are guarding the First Commandment together."
* The Call to Step Forward:
If you are ready to stop chasing empty promises,
if you need to surrender your heart to Jesus for the very first time,
if you need to be baptized,
or if you want to align yourself with this church family—
you can make that decision right here today.
Debby is going to come up.....
6. Action (Connect, Charge, Change) [Approx. 2 Min]
TRANSITION INTO ACTION:
We talked today about the first of the ten commandments... having no other gods before God... and God doesn't just want us to recognize our idols today—He calls us to destroy them.
Here is how we tear down the false gods in our lives right now..."
* 1. CONNECT (Expose the Idol in Response):
* Right where you are seated, or here at the front, take this moment as we sing to lay your functional idol—whether it's control, approval, comfort, or financial security—at the feet of Jesus and name it for what it is.
TRANSITION FROM CONNECT TO CHARGE:
"Naming your idol in prayer today is step one—but if you don't starve it this week, it will climb right back onto the throne of your heart..."
* 2. CHARGE (Starve the Idol This Week):
* Identify the single daily habit that feeds that idol—the endless scrolling, the impulsive spending, the workaholism, or the desperate seeking of validation—and cut off its supply line for the next seven days.
TRANSITION FROM CHARGE TO CHANGE:
"When you tear down an idol vertically, you stop using the people around you to feed it..."
* 3. CHANGE (Replace the Idol with Love):
* Go back to the people you’ve been using or resenting to satisfy that idol—your spouse, your kids, or your coworkers—and serve them with the selfless love of Christ.
TRANSITION OUT OF ACTION (Final Dismissal):
When God is your only God, every other boundary in life falls into place.
Tear down the idols, restore your heart, and let's go live in freedom.
As we sing, let's be open to and respond as the Holy Spirit leads.
Sing - I SURRENDER ALL
PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
thank You for being the God who rescues us by grace before You ever ask us to follow Your lead.
Forgive us for the times we’ve tried to fix our lives while leaving You
off the throne of our hearts, chasing empty idols that could never love us back.
Search our hearts today, dismantle every false god we've leaned on,
and anchor us deeply in the truth that we are Your beloved children.
May our lives, our relationships, and our worship
flow out of an undivided devotion to You alone, in Jesus' name, Amen.
