John 14 ESV

1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves. 12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it. 15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you. 18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me. 25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, 31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here.

Continuation of last weeks message “Get some help”

John 6:63 “63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.”

We established a few key things last week

Namely that the Flesh cannot produce spiritial life (point 1). (Leaf blower and the battery), When that thing is charged up. Man, its so easy! we need many fillings

But the flesh on its own cant help us. God can help us. and He has given us the spirit. The Spirit Gives us new life (point 2)

and that this spirit life is truly a daily decision to pick up the wind of the spirit every day and allow that daily to become my new normal.

So today: ….What is the SPIRITS ROLE IN MY LIFE. What is the Spirits role in YOUR LIFE. Lets look at John together and find out?

Big IdeaThe Christian life begins and continues by the work of the Holy Spirit.

John 6:63

The Spirit doesn't simply make us better people—He makes us new people.

1. THE SPIRIT COMES AND DWELLS IN ME

John

John 3:5–6

"Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God."

John 14:17

"He dwells with you and will be in you."

The Holy Spirit makes salvation personal to me. not something thats far off or even one person away.

Christianity is not inherited.

You can't be born into the Kingdom because your parents love Jesus.

You can't be saved because your spouse prays.

You can't experience your pastor's relationship with God.

You can't borrow someone else's faith.

Every person must experience the miracle of being born again.

Nicodemus was one of the most religious men alive, yet Jesus told him his religion wasn't enough. He needed a new birth.

The Holy Spirit doesn't renovate the old life.

He creates a new one.

Imagine trying to live off someone else's heartbeat.

It's impossible.

Just as no one else can breathe for you physically, no one else can believe for you spiritually.

The Holy Spirit comes personally to every believer.

Application

Ask yourself:

Have I personally surrendered my life to Christ?

Am I depending on yesterday's experience or walking with Him today?

Quote

"God has no grandchildren." — Common Christian saying

Every believer becomes God's child through personal faith in Christ.

2. THE SPIRIT REVEALS JESUS TO ME

John 16:13–14

"He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you."

John 15:26

"He will bear witness about me."

The Holy Spirit never points attention to Himself.

His mission is always to reveal Jesus.

"The Holy Spirit longs to reveal Jesus in us and through us." - Andrew Murray

Sometimes people ask, "How do I know I'm really saved?"

One of the greatest evidences isn't perfection.

It's affection.

You begin loving the One you once ignored.

The Holy Spirit changes what captures your heart.

You begin seeing Jesus differently.

You love His Word.

You long to obey Him.

You grieve your sin because you love your Savior.

Paul writes in Ephesians that believers are "sealed with the promised Holy Spirit" (Ephesians 1:13) and "sealed for the day of redemption" (Ephesians 4:30).

That seal is God's declaration:

"This one belongs to Me."

The moon has no light of its own.

It simply reflects the sun.

Likewise, the Holy Spirit shines His light on Jesus—not Himself.

Application

If your heart continually points toward Christ—even imperfectly—that is evidence of the Spirit's work.

3. THE SPIRIT EMPOWERS MY LIFE TO BOAST IN CHRIST ALONE

Spirit birthed in me,

Spirit revealing Jesus to me,

Now the spirit working out from me

my true helper

John 15:5

"Apart from me you can do nothing."

John 16:14

"He will glorify me."

Philippians 3:3

"...who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh."

We usually think boasting is always sinful.

We picture someone saying,

"Look how successful I am."

"Look how smart I am."

"Look what I accomplished."

That's boasting in ourselves.

The gospel gives us a new kind of boasting.

Not,

"Look at me."

But,

"Look at Jesus."

The Holy Spirit continually redirects our praise.

When God answers prayer...

Praise Jesus.

When your marriage is restored...

Praise Jesus.

When you overcome temptation...

Praise Jesus.

When lives are changed...

Praise Jesus.

The flesh says,

"I did this."

The Spirit says,

"Christ did this in me."

The more the Holy Spirit fills us, the smaller we become and the bigger Jesus becomes.

John the Baptist understood this perfectly.

"He must increase, but I must decrease." (John 3:30)

That is the language of a Spirit-filled believer.

Think of a spotlight at a theater.

No one walks away talking about how amazing the spotlight was.

The spotlight exists to reveal the actor.

The Holy Spirit is heaven's spotlight.

His ministry is always to illuminate Jesus.

Application

Ask yourself:

What gets the most attention in my life—me or Jesus?

When people leave a conversation with me, do they admire my accomplishments or Christ's grace?

Conclusion

The Spirit's work can be summarized in three simple truths:

He comes to live in me so I can experience the new birth.

He reveals Jesus to me so I know Him, love Him, and rest in His saving work.

He empowers me to boast in Christ alone so that every part of my life points to His glory.

As John writes:

"He must increase, but I must decrease." — John 3:30

That's the evidence of a Spirit-filled life—not that people leave talking about us, but that they leave talking about Jesus.
