Help is on the Way

SCRIPTURE

Psalm 121:1–2 NKJV

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help? 2 My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.

INTRODUCTION

Some people don’t like asking for help. I’m one of those people.

I’ll give you an example. I was trying to fix a tire on my lawn mower. One of the front tires had gone flat and come off the bead. I jacked it up, grabbed a strap and a screwdriver, and the air hose. I got the strap around the tire, wrapped the screw driver in it, and started tightening it. I was holding the screwdriver with one hand, the air hose with the other hand, the tire with one knee to keep it from spinning, and was trying to squeeze the trigger on the air hose with my other knee. It looked like I was playing a game of redneck twister by myself and I was losing. There were at least three people inside the house that I could have called on for help. But I thought I could handle it on my own. After about 15 minutes of frustration, I finally asked for help and got the tire inflated.

Aren’t we all like that sometimes? We try to handle it our own and we wait until we’ve gotten tired, frustrated, and desperate before we ask for help.

But the psalmist knows where his help comes from and doesn’t waste any time calling on His name!

When we are in need, Psalm 121 reminds us to LOOK UP, FOCUS ON JESUS, and HOPE IN GOD, because HELP IS ON THE WAY!

MESSAGE

Look Up!

The psalmist initially has his head down.

Why do we allow ourselves to get down?

Psalm 42:11 NKJV

11 Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you disquieted within me?...

God is our hope and our help!

Psalm 42:11 NKJV

11 ...Hope in God; For I shall yet praise Him, The help of my countenance and my God.

LOOK UP! HELP IS ON THE WAY!

Focus on Jesus!

Our help comes from the Lord!

The hills (mountains) represented trouble/danger.

The psalmist looked beyond the circumstances and saw the solution!

Philippians 4:13 NKJV

13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

FOCUS ON JESUS! HELP IS ON THE WAY!

Trust in God!

Since God made it, He can fix it.

If God made the hills, the hills don't intimidate Him.

If He made the storm, the storm obeys Him.

If He made the sickness-permitting world, the sickness answers to Him.

Faith can move mountains!

Matthew 17:20 NKJV

20 So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

Faith can give us strength to climb!

Psalm 18:32–33 NKJV

32 It is God who arms me with strength, And makes my way perfect. 33 He makes my feet like the feet of deer, And sets me on my high places.

CONCLUSION

We all have our own version of that lawn mower tire. A problem we grip tight with both hands and both knees, refusing to let go, refusing to ask, telling ourselves we've got this — until we're worn out, frustrated, and still stuck exactly where we started.

The psalmist didn't wait fifteen minutes of frustration before he called out. He looked at the hills, felt the weight of the question, and immediately turned his eyes toward the One who made heaven and earth. He didn't stay stuck in the asking — he moved straight to the answer.

Right now, some of you have your head down. Some of you are staring at a mountain that looks too big to move. Some of you have been trying to fix it yourself, one hand, one knee at a time, refusing to call for help.

Look up. Focus on Jesus. Trust in God.

Because your help isn't a maybe, and it isn't far off. It's already on the way — it has a name, and His name is the Lord.

CALL TO ACTION

If you're carrying something too heavy to hold on your own — a diagnosis, a marriage, a wayward child, a financial mountain, a fear you haven't said out loud — stop wrestling it alone.

If your head's been down, this is your invitation to lift it up. Come to the altar. Call on the name of the Lord — right now, right where you are. Don't wait until you're exhausted to ask for help. He made heaven and earth, and He's already moving on your behalf.

Help is on the way!
