Series Intro
Holy Spirit
-we have an 8 week series we do during our mid week classes on the Holy Spirit - that lays a foundation for what we’re talking about today…
In this series on the Holy Spirit we’re going to notice in scripture how God desires to supernaturally interact with humanity through the empowerment power of the Holy Spirit released into the earth at Pentecost.
It’s our Heart to Pastor you well..
I have to admint that This job of Pastoring a generation can be a difficult. Especially as corrections are made from one generation to the next .
It's common in every area of theology when one generation overdoes it and becomes unballanced… the other generation underdoes it and becomes unbalanced In the opposite direction.
So today…
Transition: the title of our message today is...
Sermon Title | Introducing the Holy Spirit
I think the title of this message is quite presumption… to even think I can properly Introduce him to you… The truth is… we only know the Holy Spirit…. to the extent in which He has revealed in Scripture.
So… lets open our Bibles to Acts 1:8… Luke the writer of Acts… describes last interaction Jesus has with his people before he assends to heaven.
Ac 1:1-8 ESV
The Promise of the Holy Spirit
1 In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, 2 until the day when he was taken up(Speaking of the Assention of Jesus) , after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. 3 He presented himself alive(Ressurection) to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for WHAT? the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” (This baptism with the Holy Spirit - is the Promise of the Father)
The Ascension
6 So when they had come together, they asked him, “Lord, will you at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?” 7 He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons that the Father has fixed by his own authority. 8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
***Feel free to encourage people to listen to the Holy Spirit speak to them personally as the message is preached
LETS PRAY
YOU CAN WALK OFF THE STAGE WHEN YOU SAY AMEN

Introduction

We are a Penticostal Church that believe scripture is clear that the Baptism in Holy Spirit is for today. I like to say it like this, we are a Penticostal with a seatblet. That seatblet is SCRIPTURE. If someone is beaving a way and blames it on the Holy Spirit… we look into scripture & if we don’t see it… we don’t do it. It’s that simple.
We understand that Not every theological stream agrees in what we are teaching today, and we don’t always agree with them… and thats ok.
Over these four weeks, we're going to explore what it looks like to life a life that demonstrates the power of the Holy Spirit.
If we don’t get this today… here’s…
What’s at stake?
Let's look at it on the screen together.
If we don’t understand this today… we’ll have the Holy Spirits power available, yet live a powerless life. God’s purposes for your life will be greatly hindered.
Doe’s anyone want to live a powerless life? Me neither

Sermon Title | Understanding the Power of Holy Spirit
Today is a bit of an intro that will set us up for the next few weeks of this series. So.. lets talk about WHO the Holy Spirit is and WHY we need Him.
We'll do this by answering a couple foundational questions first… IN YOUR NOTES…

WHO is the Holy Spirit? (Acts. 1:1-3)

***Clay The following definition will come fast, so please leave it on the same slide as the Main Point Slide “Who It is the Holy Spirit.”
Here is a concise definition … The Holy Spirit is…
Dictionary of Bible Themes 3010 God, the Holy Spirit

The co-equal and co-eternal Spirit of the Father and the Son, who inspired Scripture and brings new life to the people of God.

The word Trinity is often used to describe these three persons of the Godhead.
It describes… that God exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit -or helper as Jesus introduces him to us in Jn. 14.
To understand the Holy Spirit we must understand the essence of GOd… IN YOUR NOTES… 1st

God is ONE God (Deu. 6:4)

there are not multipal Gods

God is THREE - DISTINCT Persons Gen 1:1, Matt 28:19, Acts 5:3-4,

Father, Son and Holy Spirit… He is not three seperate Gods
Next IN YOUR NOTES

The three persons are EQUAL.(Jn 10:30, Acts 5:3-4)

there is no pecking order… they are in full UNION with eachother
Lastly…IN YOUR NOTES

They carry out different FUNCTIONS (Eph. 1:3-5, Heb. 10:10-14, Eph. 1:13-14)

They have different roles, in creation, in salvation, and…. in how he interacts with the world .
Friends… Who is the Holy Spirit… the Holy Spirit is GOD…
Conclusion: So to beleive anything less about God the Holy Spirit… contradicts scripture.
In the Church age - the Holy Spirit is the primary way God interacts with the world.
God is revealed to the world through the Scriptures… The Holy Spirit lives in us…. and reveals God through us…
How many of you think its important to get to know God, the Holy Spirit?
Here is the question I believe scripture is inviting us to ask ourselves today…

Question: How has the Holy Spirit been a helper to you?

Church, without him we would not have our scriptures, we would not have the revelation of God… we would be lost and stuck in our sin.
Has he ben a HELP to you?
Transition: the title of our message today is...
Sermon Title | Introducing Holy Spirit
We understand who the Holy Spirit is. That He is God
He is literally the same Spirit thats proceeds from Father and the Son… He is, God with us, but also living inside of us.
Let me teach you for a moment…
We know Jesus said taught is Disciples that they received the Holy Spirit at Salvation… at the SAME time…. He invites them to WAIT for more (Someone say MORE) that MORE is called… The Baptism in the Holy Spirit .. letting us know there is a 2nd work or additional work of the Holy Spirit in our life.
If Jesus said there is more to received… how many of you want to receive MORE? Me 2!

The next foundational question I want to answer regarding the Holy Spirit is… IN YOUR NOTES is…

WHY do we need the Holy Spirit? Matt. 3:11, Acts 1:4-8

So… WHY… do we need the Batptism in the Holy Spirit - why do we need MORE? Acts 1:8.… told us..
TO his saved desciples he said…
Acts 1:8 ESV
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you....
So that we will receive what? right.. POWER.. I want you to have MORE…
This promise of the father is what scripture call’s the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.
This is nothing new in scripture.. we know in Matt 3:11 … 3 years before this promise came to us… it was Prophaied by John the Baptist… that God would empower us…
Jn said…
Matthew 3:11 ESV
“I baptize you with water for repentance, but he(Jesus) who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He/Jesus will(Do what) baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
Right… the baptism in the Holy Spirit is the MORE… a special releasing of Power upon his people.
Joel, John and others prophasized about it, Luke wrote about it… Jesus said wait for it… and when the promise came… people we’re baptized with the Holy Spirit.
Simply put… IN YOUR NOTES… We need the baptism in the Holy Spirit… becuase…

Answer: He wants to EMPOWER us. (Acts 1:8)

He wants us to be MORE….
Why wouldn’t anyone want to receive a special Gift of power when he made it availabe for us?
Church… God knew we needed special power for the work he was going to give us.
Let me say this for sake of teaching you:
The Holy Spirit doesn't us empower us at random. He empowers… for Jesus's mission; because the Spirit's agenda IS Jesus's agenda.
Did you hear that… the Empowerment… is for the Mission of Jesus… it’s not to afirm our own spirituality…
Church…
The Holy Spirit shares the same divine Purpose with the Father and the Son… and this special empowering gift will always point towards that purpose.
Well...
What is that divine purpose?
***I felt such a HEAVYNESS in preperation… (Becuase I think too many Spirit Baptized Christian’s want to see the gifts oporate to affirm their own spirtuality… rather than bringign GLORY to the Father) -I know becuase I have been one of them… I have been IMPRESSED with myself regarding how God uses me… rather than simply IMPRESSED with God - WE SHOULD REPENT from this as the CHARASMATIC CHURCH!
The divine purpose of God… IN YOUR NOTES is for us to

Bear WITNESS. (Jn 15:26)

Yeah, we are baptized with the Holy Spirit… to empowers us to bear witness about Jesus… and Jesus’s divine purpose is to bear witness of the father… (The Holy Spirit does NOT have a different divine purpose but shine a light upon on God)
We see this in Jn 15:26… Jesus tells his disciples..
John 15:26 ESV
“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will what? bear witness about me.
Don't you remember Act 1:8?
It said when the Holy Spirit comes, he will make us his what? Witness
Witness: It the Greek word Martys (Mahr-Toose)
It's where we get our English word martyr.
It means one who testifies.
One who lays down… for the sake of Christ.
This is part of the evidence of the The Holy Spirit Baptized People
Jesus did it, The disciples did it, Many believers throughout history have done it, But are we willing to do it?
We want the Power of the Holy Spirit… this is what its for… it’s for laying down yourself… for the sake of the Gospel… ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?
Do you feel the heavy responsability of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit…
There's no other way to serve Jesus without laying your life down…. Which in some parts of the world could mean death.
church to ask for the Holy Spirit and miss use it…
Is a waste of the power of the Holy Spirit.
I felt the HOLY SPIRIT - say this to the church in my prepeartion…
I paid a great price To empower you…
I love the lost more than you can imagine… and it breaks my heart when my power is waisted.
Don’t waist my power… but USE IT… for my sake.
Friends if you want to be a powerful witness for Christ I would ask… Jesus for the Baptism in the Holy Spirit
What is the divine purpose of ?
Lastly… we need the Holy Spirit to… IN YOUR NOTES

Demonstrate POWER (1 Cor 2:1-5)

God wants to demonstrate his Power through his people…
We see this in 1 Corinthians 2:1-5 Paul said this….
1 Corinthians 2:1–5 ESV
And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but(SOMEONE SAY BUT) in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.
Paul is saying… I know I was not impressive to you.. BUT GOD - I know His power was!
Your salvation does not rest on your intelect… but on the transforming POWER of God..
Paul said… You don’t even need to be all that wise to share Christ with others.. you just need the POWER of God…
How many want the EMPOWERMENT….
Stop worrying about your words… how to say it right… what to say, what not to say… and simply DEPEND on the POWER of God to be demonstrated through you.
I was with a friend this weekend… he kept saying WOW - I like how you explained that about God and your devotion to him… I’m like… NO.. .im not smart enough to “WOW” you… that was the POWER of God
Church… This only Scratches the surface… Over the next few weeks we’re going to look at the 9 different gifts of the spirit that that flow through thoes who have been baptized in the Holy Spirit… these gifts always point to and acomplish the mission of Jesus.
Here is the question I believe scripture is inviting us to ask ourselves today…

Question: What is Jesus asking of you that you cannot do without his empowerment?

Trans: How many of you want His Empowerment…
The same way we step out in faith to recieve Salvation… we do the same to receive the Baptism in the Holy Spirt…
"If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (ESV)
Receive the Holy Spirit in Faith.
ALTAR CALL: BRING PEOPLE UP FOR PRAYER… & PRAY OVER THEM
After Praying over everyone…
How do I know.. I have received this…
One of the 1st signs is that you will receive a heavenly prayer language - Speaking in Tongues…
Over… The Next 3 week we are going to talk more about the Gifts of God destributed to us through the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Salvation Altar Call
I believe Jesus is here today, and He wants to save you. Salvation simply means to deliver or to free. It’s not just about delivering you…
It’s about believing
Believing in Jesus means trusting what He say’s—about sin, and eternal punishment, thats the bad news.
The good news is this… that His death on the cross paid the penalty for our sins, making us right with God.
Ephesians 2:8 reminds us: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” Salvation requires two things:
1. God’s Grace—His undeserved gift of forgiveness and life because of His love for you.
2. Faith—placing your trust in Him for salvation.
If you’ve never asked Jesus to save you, today is your day. If you’d like ask him… , raise your hand.
I want to invite you to Repeat a prayer after me
· There is nothing magical in this prayer.. it simply is a way of declaring to Jesus what has taken place in your heart.
Here is how I would like to end the service for everyone else….
Call to Action Altar Call
We’re going to end the service with A question as we do nearly every week.
ALL ACROSS THE ROOM – HAS THE HOLY SPIRIT spoken to you in anyway today?

Going Deeper

What stuck out to you the in this passage? (Acts 1)
Question: How different would you live if you we’re fully aware of the Holy Spirit’s life within you? (Acts 1:1-3, Jn 14)
Question: What is Jesus asking of you that you cannot do without his empowerment? (Acts 1:4-8)
What might the Holy Spirit be saying to you in light of this teaching?
How might the Holy Spirit want to transform you in light of this teaching?
What actions might the Holy Spirit want to take in light of this teaching?
Tongues & Interpretation
1. To STRENGTHEN the Church (1 Cor14:5)
For prophecy is greater than SPEAKING in TONGUES, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be STRENGTHENED.
Believers, God has operated through this gift today to strengthen you today. Let your faith be strengthened and know that God is in control and using supernatural measures to speak to us.
2. Is a SIGN for unbelievers. (1Cor. 14: 21a, 22)
1 Corinthians 14:21–22 (ESV)
In the Law it is written, “By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.
22 -  So you see that speaking in tongues is a SIGN, not for believers, but for UNBELIEVERS.
The Bible explains to us God has chosen to use this gift to be a sign for you. A sign for what? It is a sign of his realness for those of you who have been doubting or questioning the existence of God. He wants you to know he is REAL and he wants to bring you spiritual life and health. If you're in here today and you don't know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior... he wants you to know he has gone to great lengths to show you his love today. (Great opportunity for a salvation altar call if it fits).
