Reminders from Ephesian Sunday School

Lesson Text: Acts 20 Focus Verses: Acts 20:28-31 (KJV) Theme: Faithful disciples leave faithful disciples.

Big Idea: Before Paul left the Ephesian elders, he didn't talk about buildings, budgets, or programs. He reminded them to guard themselves, protect the church, teach the truth, live holy lives, and remember the incredible privilege of belonging to Christ. Lesson Objective By the end of this lesson, believers should: Understand Paul's final charge to the Ephesian elders. Appreciate the importance of spiritual disciplines and biblical leadership. They'll remember... how they lived how they loved how they prayed how they treated peoplePaul wanted that same kind of legacy. Historical Background Paul's Relationship with Ephesus Paul spent nearly three years in Ephesus (Acts 19-20), longer than almost anywhere else. During those years he: taught daily performed miracles planted churches confronted idolatry discipled leaders endured persecutionNow he is traveling toward Jerusalem. The Holy Ghost has already warned him imprisonment awaits (Acts 20:22-23). He believes this is probably his last meeting with these leaders. These aren't casual goodbye remarks. These are dying words. People listen differently when they know someone is speaking for the last time.

Read the Focus Passage Acts 20:28-31 (KJV) Especially emphasize verse 28: "Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock..." Notice Paul's order. He doesn't say: Take care of the church. He says: Take care of yourself first.

Lesson Outline I. Great Leaders Lead By Example Scripture Acts 20:18-21 Paul reminds them they watched him. They didn't simply hear sermons. They watched his life. His tears. His sacrifices. His consistency. His humility. His work ethic. His generosity. His suffering.

Principle People rarely become what we say. They become what we consistently model.

Modern Illustration Children learn more from watching Mom and Dad than listening. Employees imitate the culture of the boss. Churches eventually resemble their pastor. Leadership is always contagious. Reflection If people copied your Christianity... Would they become stronger? Or merely religious?

II. Teaching Is More Than Information Scripture Acts 20:20 Acts 20:27 Paul taught publicly. He taught house to house. He taught difficult subjects. He didn't avoid uncomfortable truth.

Insight Information changes minds. Truth changes lives. Biblical teaching isn't simply transferring knowledge. It's producing transformation.

Illustration A personal trainer doesn't simply explain exercises. He teaches until your body changes. Likewise... A disciple isn't measured by what they know. They're measured by what they become. Discussion Why do churches today sometimes prefer inspiration over instruction? Can someone attend church for years and still remain spiritually immature? Why?

III. Watch for Wolves Scripture Acts 20:29-30 Paul says wolves will come... from outside and from inside. Not everyone who speaks about God speaks for God.

Insight False teachers rarely announce themselves. Counterfeit money doesn't look fake. That's why bankers study the real thing. Christians must know Scripture.

Modern Application Today wolves may appear through: social media podcasts YouTube bestselling books charismatic personalitiesPopularity is not proof of truth. Question How can believers discern truth without becoming cynical?

IV. Guard Yourself Before Guarding Others Scripture Acts 20:28 Notice Paul's order. Take heed unto yourselves... then the flock.

Illustration Flight attendants always instruct: Put your own oxygen mask on first. You can't help anyone else if you pass out. Spiritually... Burned-out leaders eventually produce burned-out churches. Application Healthy churches begin with healthy leaders. Healthy families begin with healthy parents. Healthy ministries begin with healthy servants.

V. Your Spiritual Disciplines Matter The lesson emphasizes: "I will be faithful to my spiritual disciplines." Spiritual Disciplines Include prayer Bible reading worship fasting giving serving fellowship solitude obedienceIllustration No one accidentally gets physically healthy. Likewise... Nobody accidentally becomes spiritually mature. Growth requires habits. Ask What discipline has strengthened your walk with God the most? Which discipline do you struggle with?

VI. The Church Must Stay Unified Scripture Ephesians 2:11-22 Ephesians 4:1-6 Paul reminds them: Jew... Gentile... Rich... Poor... Male... Female... One body.

Illustration The Berlin Wall stood nearly thirty years. Families couldn't see each other. Friends couldn't visit. People died trying to cross. Then one announcement changed everything. The wall came down. Paul says something even greater happened at Calvary. The wall separating sinners from God... came down. The wall separating Jews and Gentiles... came down. The Cross destroys barriers.

Modern Application Today's walls include: race politics denominations education income age social statusThe Gospel calls us family before anything else.

Discussion What walls still divide churches today? How can believers intentionally remove them? VII. Never Live Below Your Privilege Scripture Ephesians 4:17-24 Ephesians 1:13-14 Ephesians 3:20 Paul reminds believers: You aren't who you used to be. You've been adopted. Redeemed. Sealed. Forgiven. Empowered.

Illustration Imagine a prince raised in poverty. One day he discovers he's the king's son. His identity changes before his circumstances do. He doesn't become royalty. He discovers he always belonged. Likewise... Christians don't earn sonship. They live from it. Key Truth Behavior flows from identity. We don't obey to become God's children. We obey because we already are.

VIII. The Church Makes Us Stronger Scripture Ephesians 4:11-16 Acts 20:32 God strengthens believers through: pastors teachers fellowship accountability encouragement correction worship serving togetherIllustration One charcoal briquette removed from the fire quickly loses heat. Put it back... it burns again. Isolation weakens believers. Community strengthens them. Practical Applications This week... ✓ Guard your own heart. ✓ Spend intentional time with God. ✓ Encourage another believer. ✓ Read one chapter of Ephesians daily. ✓ Pray for your church leaders. ✓ Identify one spiritual discipline to strengthen. ✓ Ask God to reveal any "walls" you've built toward others.

Closing Challenge This week, ask yourself three questions every morning: Am I guarding my own heart? Am I helping someone else grow? Am I living like someone who belongs to Christ?If every believer asked those questions daily, churches would become healthier, stronger, and more Christlike.

Closing Prayer Father, Thank You for the faithful example of the Apostle Paul and for the reminders found in Your Word. Help us first to examine our own hearts before trying to lead others. Give us a hunger for Your truth, a love for Your Church, and the wisdom to recognize error. Strengthen us through prayer, Your Word, and the fellowship of believers. Tear down every wall that divides us and help us walk in the unity Christ purchased through His blood. May our lives leave behind a legacy of faith that points others to Jesus. Help us never to live beneath the privilege of being called Your children. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
