Spiritual Dementia

Main Text: Psalm 103:2 “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits,”

Focus Statement: Do you have spiritual Dementia?

Function Statement: Have you forgotten me!

I. If you ever had to deal with an individual with dementia, you will often have to on continual basis remind them of who you are, your relationship to them and your reason for being there. As soon as you do, they may forget and ask you the same question.

II. The question for us to ponder today is, why does God have to keep telling us who He is? Have we so quickly forgotten him.

III. The Bible is clear, God often prescribe the intentional act of rememberance so that not only for our benifit but for our childrens benefit

A. Deuteronomy 8:3–4 “And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Your clothing did not wear out on you and your foot did not swell these forty years.”

IV. We live in world where we’re so focused on tomorrow or next, that we forget to see what is right now! Scripture warns us to committ to now, and not tommorrow. That we forgotten where God has brought us to

A. Deuteronomy 4:9 ““Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children’s children—”

B. Deuteronomy 8:11–14 ““Take care lest you forget the Lord your God by not keeping his commandments and his rules and his statutes, which I command you today, lest, when you have eaten and are full and have built good houses and live in them, and when your herds and flocks multiply and your silver and gold is multiplied and all that you have is multiplied, then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery,”

V. The power of remembrance and testimony, lies in not forgetting how good God is, and by who power we stand on today

A. Psalm 77:11–12 “I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds.”

B. Psalm 78:4–7 “We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children, so that they should set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments;”

VI. I’m reminded daily of how good God is!

A. Lamentations 3:21–23 “But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
