"Shining the Light in the Hallways"

Text: Matthew 5:13–16

Theme: School is not just a place to learn—it is a mission field where Christians are called to influence others for Christ.

Introduction

As students prepare for another school year, they'll receive:

New schedules

New teachers

New classmates

New expectations

But as Christians, they also carry something no school can provide—the light of Christ.

Jesus never intended His followers to hide their faith. Whether in a classroom, cafeteria, locker room, or on the ball field, Christians are called to shine.

I. Remember Who You Are (vv. 13–14)

"You are the salt... You are the light..."

Jesus doesn't say, "Become the light."

He says, "You are the light."

Discuss:

Salt preserves.

Salt creates thirst.

Light exposes darkness.

Light gives direction.

Application: Students shouldn't change their identity to fit in. They should remember whose they are.

II. Your Character Speaks Before Your Words (v. 16)

People will watch:

Your attitude.

Your language.

Your honesty.

Your kindness.

Your reactions.

Before classmates hear your testimony, they'll see your life.

Philippians 2:14–16 “Do all things without grumbling or disputing, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and twisted generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast to the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain.”

Colossians 4:5–6 “Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.”

Application: Your example may be the only Bible someone reads this year.

III. Choose Friends Who Help You Follow Christ

Texts:

Proverbs 13:20 “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”

1 Corinthians 15:33 “Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.””

Your friends influence:

Your language.

Your priorities.

Your decisions.

Your faith.

Challenge students to be friendly with everyone, but intentional about close friendships.

Challenge parents to know who is influencing their children.

IV. Stand for Truth Even When You're Alone

Daniel was probably a teenager when he chose not to defile himself.

He didn't wait until adulthood to be faithful.

Application: There will be pressure to compromise. The goal isn't to fit in. The goal is to be faithful.

V. Never Leave Jesus at the School Door

Faith isn't just for Sunday.

Jesus belongs:

At school.

At work.

On the ball field.

On social media.

At home.

The greatest education a student can receive is learning to walk faithfully with Christ.

Invitation

Ask the congregation:

Students: Will you be different this year?

Parents: Will your home prepare your children spiritually as much as academically?

Grandparents: Will you pray daily for the students in your family?

Church family: Will we encourage and support our young people as they face another year?

Close with a challenge from 1 Timothy 4:12:

"Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith, in purity."
