My Cup Runneth Over

Psalm 23 moves beautifully from God's guidance (vv. 1-4) to God's abundance (v. 5). The phrase "My cup overflows" is not merely about having enough. It's about the extravagant goodness of God.

MY CUP OVERFLOWS

Psalm 23:5

Key Text: Psalm 23:5 "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows."

Introduction

Most people live with a scarcity mindset.

· Not enough money

· Not enough time

· Not enough strength

· Not enough opportunities

Yet David declares something different:

"My cup overflows."

David is not speaking from a palace. David knew caves, battles, betrayal, and heartache.

Yet in the middle of life's challenges, he testifies:

"God has been more than enough."

I. GOD IS NOT A HALF-GLASS GOD

Psalm 23 is a portrait of abundance.

The Shepherd does not merely keep the sheep alive.

He:

· Makes them lie down in green pastures

· Leads them beside still waters

· Restores their souls

· Anoints their heads with oil

· Causes their cups to overflow

God isn't interested in barely getting you by.

Illustration:

Some people serve a "just enough" God.

Enough grace for Sunday. Enough strength for today. Enough blessing to survive.

But Scripture reveals a God who delights in abundance.

El Shaddai

Genesis 17:1

"I am God Almighty..."

The Hebrew name is El Shaddai.

The all-sufficient One. The God who is more than enough.

Not merely enough power. More than enough power.

Not merely enough grace. More than enough grace.

Not merely enough mercy. More than enough mercy.

The same God who fed Israel in the wilderness is still supplying His people today.

When God fills a cup, it spills over.

II. THE ANOINTING PRECEDES THE OVERFLOW

Psalm 23:5

"You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows."

Notice the order:

The oil comes before the overflow.

In Scripture, oil represents:

· The Holy Spirit

· Consecration

· Empowerment

· God's favor

David says, "You anointed me and then my cup overflowed."

Many want the overflow without the oil.

They want:

· Blessing without surrender

· Power without prayer

· Favor without obedience

But overflow begins with the presence of God.

Application

The closer you walk with Him, the fuller your life becomes.

Not because of possessions.

Because of His presence.

You can have little and still overflow.

III. JESUS IS THE SOURCE OF THE OVERFLOW

John 2

The first miracle Jesus performed involved turning water into wine.

A small need became abundant provision.

The miracle wasn't barely enough.

It was overflowing abundance.

John 7:37-38

"Whoever believes in me... rivers of living water will flow from within them."

Not a cup. Not a stream.

Rivers.

Jesus never promised a trickle.

He promised a torrent.

The Holy Spirit is not intended to occasionally visit believers.

He is intended to flow through believers continually.

Living Water

The world leaves people thirsty.

Success leaves them thirsty.

Possessions leave them thirsty.

Religion leaves them thirsty.

But Jesus satisfies completely.

IV. BE FILLED AND STAY FILLED

Ephesians 5:18

"Be filled with the Spirit."

The language implies continual action.

Keep being filled.

Why?

Because life leaks.

Ministry drains.

Trials exhaust.

Battles wear us down.

Yesterday's filling is wonderful. But today's battle requires today's filling.

Practical Ways to Stay Filled

· Spend time in God's Word

· Worship consistently

· Pray continually

· Stay connected to the body of Christ

· Yield daily to the Holy Spirit

You don't maintain overflow accidentally.

You cultivate it intentionally.

V. GOD DOES MORE THAN WE CAN IMAGINE

Ephesians 3:20

"Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine..."

That is an overflowing God.

He exceeds:

· Our prayers

· Our plans

· Our expectations

· Our imagination

David says: "My cup overflows."

Paul says: "He does exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think."

These are different writers declaring the same truth:

God is more than enough.

Conclusion

The Shepherd doesn't lead us into survival.

He leads us into abundance.

Not necessarily abundance of possessions.

But abundance of:

· Peace

· Joy

· Grace

· Hope

· Strength

· Love

· The Holy Spirit

Because God Himself is our portion.

Final Challenge

What does your cup look like today?

· Empty?

· Half full?

· Running low?

Come back to the Shepherd.

Let Him anoint you again.

Let Him fill you again.

Let Him refresh you again.

Because our God is still El Shaddai.

Still the God of living water.

Still the God of oil and wine.

Still the God who does exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or imagine.

And when He fills your life,

your cup will not simply be full...

it will overflow.

"Lord, I don't want to merely survive. I don't want just enough. Fill me with Your Spirit until Your life overflows through me. Let Your peace overflow. Let Your joy overflow. Let Your love overflow. Make me a vessel through which living water flows to others. In Jesus' name. Amen."
