Overcoming Faith…

Tonight, I’d like to take a few minutes and look at overcoming faith or to put it another way,

Faith that overcomes the world…

Let’s start by reading our Scripture.
1 John 5:1–5 NIV
1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves the father loves his child as well. 2 This is how we know that we love the children of God: by loving God and carrying out his commands. 3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome, 4 for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. 5 Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.
Over the last several months, we have talked a lot about God’s love. John spends so much time talking about God’s love, because without God’s love, we aren’t even here, but if we were here, we would have absolutely no hope of living an overcoming life.
Verses 1 and 5 tie together.

To overcome in this world…

we need to be born of God. That means to believe that Jesus is the Son of God. This isn’t just something that is head knowledge. This needs to get into our spirit, our hearts.
When we are born of God, everything changes. Our spirits come alive.
Romans 5:19 NIV
19 For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous.
God said to Adam in
Genesis 2:16–17 NIV
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”
