Matthew 14:1–21 GW
At that time Herod, ruler of Galilee, heard the news about Jesus. He said to his officials, “This is John the Baptizer! He has come back to life. That’s why he has the power to perform these miracles.” Herod had arrested John, tied him up, and put him in prison. Herod did this for Herodias, the wife of his brother Philip. John had been telling Herod, “It’s not right for you to be married to her.” So Herod wanted to kill John. However, he was afraid of the people because they thought John was a prophet. When Herod celebrated his birthday, Herodias’ daughter danced for his guests. Herod was so delighted with her that he swore he would give her anything she wanted. Urged by her mother, she said, “Give me the head of John the Baptizer on a platter.” The king regretted his promise. But because of his oath and his guests, he ordered that her wish be granted. He had John’s head cut off in prison. So the head was brought on a platter and given to the girl, who took it to her mother. John’s disciples came for the body and buried it. Then they went to tell Jesus. When Jesus heard about John, he left in a boat and went to a place where he could be alone. The crowds heard about this and followed him on foot from the cities. When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd. He felt sorry for them and cured their sick people. In the evening the disciples came to him. They said, “No one lives around here, and it’s already late. Send the crowds to the villages to buy food for themselves.” Jesus said to them, “They don’t need to go away. You give them something to eat.” They told him, “All we have here are five loaves of bread and two fish.” Jesus said, “Bring them to me.” Then he ordered the people to sit down on the grass. After he took the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and blessed the food. He broke the loaves apart, gave them to the disciples, and they gave them to the people. All of them ate as much as they wanted. When they picked up the leftover pieces, they filled twelve baskets. About five thousand men had eaten. (This number does not include the women and children who had eaten.)

I. John the Baptist was beheaded- Brutally murdered!

II. Jesus retaliated by being moved with compassion and healing the sick(, instead of striking out against Herod.

A. We must

Matthew 14:14 KJV 1900
And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.

A. We must be moved by the God kind of love instead of by our senses— by the Word instead of by sense of Knowledge.

B. Jesus did not allow Satan to trap Him into the sense realm. He stayed in the faith realm.

C. , Faith works by love

Galatians 5:6 GW
As far as our relationship to Christ Jesus is concerned, it doesn’t matter whether we are circumcised or not. But what matters is a faith that expresses itself through love.

D. , Our faith is the victory that overcomes the world.

1 John 5:4 GW
because everyone who has been born from God has won the victory over the world. Our faith is what wins the victory over the world.

III. Jesus spoiled the adversary by charging the world of the spirit instead of the physical or sense world.

A. Our adversary is the devil-not men. Herod was not Jesus’ enemy; Satan was. Jesus knew that.

B. Jesus never did relinquish His attack on the world of the spirit until the Cross. He made Himself obedient to death.

IV. The Love walk is a walk of freedom from fear.

A. , There is no fear in love

1 John 4:18 KJV 1900
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

B. Love is the mother of faith

C. , The life of the intercessor.

1 John 4:13–18 GW
We know that we live in him and he lives in us because he has given us his Spirit. We have seen and testify to the fact that the Father sent his Son as the Savior of the world. God lives in those who declare that Jesus is the Son of God, and they live in God. We have known and believed that God loves us. God is love. Those who live in God’s love live in God, and God lives in them. God’s love has reached its goal in us. So we look ahead with confidence to the day of judgment. While we are in this world, we are exactly like him ⌊with regard to love⌋. No fear exists where his love is. Rather, perfect love gets rid of fear, because fear involves punishment. The person who lives in fear doesn’t have perfect love.
