Today we are going to be looking at parts of 1 Cor. 12, 13…

New International Version (2011) Chapter 12

Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. 3 Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.

4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.

29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? 31 Now

Paul tells us as we enter Ch 13… what these greater gifts are… he says…

Pauls say’s who cares if you have great gifts - if they lack the foundation of love… WHO CARES!

In our text we saw 9 different gifts. These gifts are broken down into 3 groups of gifts:

Knowing gifts

Speaking gifts… and

Doing gifts.

ON this last week… we’re going to have a special time of praying for healing - if you need healing or know anyone that does come expecticting… We’re beleiving God to move

Transition: For today and the title of our message… we’re going to talk about..

Sermon Title | Gifts that KNOW

As people of God, Holy Spirit wants to reveal things - he wants us to KNOW THINGS..

If we don’t get this today… here’s…

What’s at stake?

Let's look at it on the screen together.

If we don’t understand this today… we’ll have the Holy Spirits power available, yet live a powerless life. God’s purposes for your life will be greatly hindered.

Before we dig into these gifts …Scripture. says soemthing important- IN YOUR NOTES

Our POSTURE matters.

Posture is about attitude, its about simply expecting God can and wants to Baptize us in the Holy Spirit and distribute his gifts.

Here is what a healthy posture looks like… IN YOUR NOTES…

We should DESIRE (1 Cor. 14:1)

We see this in…

1 Corinthians 14:1 ESV

Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy.

Church we should desire the gifts of the Holy Spirit….

all while Remembering this.… His gifts are given, not earned. They're not rewards for how spiritual we are.

They’re given to acomplish the DIVINE WILL OF GOD.

The 2nd… thing a healthy posture looks like… IN YOUR NOTES…

We should ASK. (Lk 11:13a)

yea… we should have a posture of asking…

It’s not our job to know whether or not God will give them… but we should desire and ask in faith…

Lk 11:13 says…

Luke 11:13 ESV

If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who WHAT?ask him!”

God wants us to not just to desire.. but ASK for his gifts..

Story about Eli when she was little - She still is… she has always been an asker.. even for simple things…

I hardly ever said no when she asked for the very things that we’re good.

I beleive when we ask according to his will he is more than happy to give his gifts.

Lastly… IN YOUR NOTES…

We should STEWARD. (1 Cor. 13:32)

We have a responpsabiltiy… when it comes to the gifts and we should steward them well…

We see this in… 1 Cor 14:32-33 the NLT puts it most plainly… it says..

1 Corinthians 14:32–33 NLT

Remember that PEOPLE who prophesy are (WHAT) IN CONTROL of their spirit and can take turns. For God is not a God of DISORDER but of PEACE…

Notice the principal of stewardship in this scripture. Just as with all other gift from God... like finances, relationships, etc…. we are stewards in control of the gift.

For example:

We don’t lose control when God’s releases a KNOWING gift… we are in CONTROL and responsable regarding how we deliver… timing, tone, etc…

OUR POSTURE MATTERS

So… we should Desire, ask and steward the gifts as God uses you.

Here is the question scripture is asking today…

Ok… lets talk more specifically about IN YOUR NOTES is…

Gifts of KNOWING. 1. Cor. 12:8-10

Paul describes three gifts of KNOWING - things that can only be revealed through receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and the gifts that come with it.

1st gift… IN YOUR NOTES… the

Gift of WISDOM v. 8a, Matt. 17:27

We see this in v. 8a…

What is a Word of Wisdom?

Transition: In your notes:

Word of Wisdom is: ADIVINE - ANSWER or solution for a particular question or challenge.

Jesus was often confronted by the religious skeptics who where trying to “trip him up” and Jesus would turn the tables on them every time with this gift of wisdom…

We see this in: Matt 17:27 - the leaders want to argue with Jesus regarding Taxes… scripture says

Matthew 17:27 ESV

However, not to give offense to them(He could have), he gave them a WORD- go to the sea and cast a hook and take the first fish that comes up, and when you open its mouth you will find a shekel. Take that and give it to them for me and for yourself.”

Practically Speaking: When operating in this gift... God gives… a divine understanding of knowing exactly the right thing to do in the moment

My wife operates in this gift quite often.

Why might you want God to use you in this gift?

Anyone have a struggeling friend…

The next gift we see listen here is… the

Gift of KNOWLEDGE. v.8b, Jn 4:1-26, Phil 2:7

We see this in V. 8b

What is a Word of Knowledge?

Transition: In your notes:

Gift of Knowledge is: a Supernatural transfer of INFORMATION that you could not otherwise possibly know.

Ever had someone reveal something deeply person… that had no way of knowing?

Biblical Example: Jesus operated in this gift often…. in John 4-the Sammaritan woman: Jesus knew a specify piece of information about a perfect stranger to Him.

People say-Jesus was God of course he knew :)… but we must remember Jesus was 100% God but also 100% human.

According to Philippians 2 …. scripture says…

Philippians 2:7 ESV

but (Jesus did what) emptied himself....

He never stoped being God… but he emptied himself of all his privileges as God and suffered as a man.

This is how we knew he depended FULLY upon the Holy Spirit for revelation as we do.

Notice:Jesus didnt use this information to Shame her… but to reveal his Lordship to her.

Can you imagine the damage that could be done to this women if this gift is not stewarded well?

A gift like this can IMPACT someone’s faith story?

Do you know someone who needs to know God see’s them?

Lastly… the 3rd gift in this 1st group… the

Gift of DISCERNING the SPIRITS. v.10c, Acts 16:16-18

We see this in v. 10 of our text…

NOT Discernment... but actually… Discerning of the Spirits.

This gift of Discernment is NOT the ability to be critical and judgmental or detect a bad attitude :)

This is differeint…

What is Discerning of the Spirits?

Transition: In your notes:

Discerning of the Spirits: The Holy Spirit enabling a beleiver to RECOGNIZE demonic spirits, including demonic activity.

Have you ever recognized demonic activity?

I have noticed Pastor Clay oporates in this gift often

(Demonic) spirits are real and they will attempt to influence our thought & behaviors… our situations… we should be aware of this.

This happened to Paul in… Act 16:16-18

Dont READ BUT PARAPHRASE:

A PESKY DEMONIC … SPIRIT WAS FOLLOWING PAUL AROUND AND HE KNEW IT. … GREATLY ANNOYED SCRIPTURE SAY’S HE CAST IT OUT OF HER…

Acts 16:16–18 ESV

As we(Paul and others) were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit of divination(Witchcraft) and brought her owners much gain by fortune-telling. She followed Paul and us, crying out, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.” And this she kept doing for many days. Paul, having become greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour.

How did Paul know this girl had an evil spirit?

He oporated in the Gift of Discernning the spirits.

***People have a lot of questions about demon posestion.. We did a couple teachings on Angles & Demons that are linked to the notes below…

Let me briefly say… there are no occurances is scriture that tells us that CHRISTIANS are posessed by Demons… but they can be influanced and oppresed.

if you are saved YOU are not posessed.

You might need inner healing - and freedom from strongholds -you are not possessed.

Why might you want God to use you in this gift?

Practically: Wouldn’t you love to know when a pestering spirit is attaching your business and disrupting the mission God has for you! When we rebuke an evil spirit like Paul did “In the name of Jesus Christ- It MUST flee. Definitely

The KNOWING gifts always reveal the DIVINE will of God for the WORLD - the HOLY SPIRITS agenda is GODS agenda… they are ONE.

Here is the question I believe scripture is inviting us to ask ourselves today…

Question: Can you recall a time when God may have used you in the Knowing gifts? What was it like, how did you steward it?

BEOFRE WE MOVE INTO OUR CLOSING PRAYER TIM

We also don’t bully people with the gifts - submit a word to them and invite them to discern what God is saying and how they should respond.

This is biblical - We should NEVER get ofended when someone want’s to test what has been said

A - CAUTION:

1 John 4:1 (ESV) "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world."

This is about testing these KNOWING GIFTS and…. Scripture is the measuring stick.

I am penticostal - but if it aint biblical - IM NOT ABOUT IT.

Salvation Altar Call

I believe Jesus is here today, and He wants to save you. Salvation simply means to deliver or to free. It’s not just about delivering you…

It’s about believing

Believing in Jesus means trusting what He say’s—about sin, and eternal punishment, thats the bad news.

The good news is this… that His death on the cross paid the penalty for our sins, making us right with God.

Ephesians 2:8 reminds us: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God.” Salvation requires two things:

1. God’s Grace—His undeserved gift of forgiveness and life because of His love for you.

2. Faith—placing your trust in Him for salvation.

If you’ve never asked Jesus to save you, today is your day. If you’d like ask him… , raise your hand.

I want to invite you to Repeat a prayer after me

· There is nothing magical in this prayer.. it simply is a way of declaring to Jesus what has taken place in your heart.

CALL TO ACTION… Do you want to be a SPIRIT LEAD PEOPLE that God uses in the KNOWING GIFTS… we dont control these gifts but we do pusture ourselves & ask for them when appropriate…

Discerning of the Spirit - TO KNOW and NOT be TRICKED regarding the enemy.

Have you ever been mad & unforgivness set in even BITTERNESS… thats an attack

Do you need inner healing today - FREEDOM from a STRONG HOLD.

Do you want God to use you in the gifts…

We’re going to end the service with A question as we do nearly every week.

Going Deeper

Tongues & Interpretation

1. To STRENGTHEN the Church (1 Cor14:5)

For prophecy is greater than SPEAKING in TONGUES, unless someone interprets what you are saying so that the whole church will be STRENGTHENED.

Believers, God has operated through this gift today to strengthen you today. Let your faith be strengthened and know that God is in control and using supernatural measures to speak to us.

2. Is a SIGN for unbelievers. (1Cor. 14: 21a, 22)

1 Corinthians 14:21–22 (ESV)

In the Law it is written, “By people of strange tongues and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and even then they will not listen to me, says the Lord.” Thus tongues are a sign not for believers but for unbelievers, while prophecy is a sign not for unbelievers but for believers.

22 -  So you see that speaking in tongues is a SIGN, not for believers, but for UNBELIEVERS.

The Bible explains to us God has chosen to use this gift to be a sign for you. A sign for what? It is a sign of his realness for those of you who have been doubting or questioning the existence of God. He wants you to know he is REAL and he wants to bring you spiritual life and health. If you're in here today and you don't know Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior... he wants you to know he has gone to great lengths to show you his love today. (Great opportunity for a salvation altar call if it fits).
