Joint service Aug. 30 Lords supper and baptism
BIG IDEA: God provides everything necessary for the battle, but we must deliberately take it up and faithfully stand.
OPENING - WHAT DOES VICTORY LOOK LIKE?
LAST WEEK: Know where your strength comes from. Know how the enemy fights. Know who the enemy is - and who he is not.
EVERYDAY BATTLES: Returning temptation; criticism; personal conflict; discouragement; bad news; delayed prayer; pressure to compromise.
ASK: What does victory look like when God does not immediately remove the pressure?
MARINE CONNECTION: Taking a position requires movement. Holding a position requires endurance. Both require action.
"Paul gives us two battlefield commands: STAND and TAKE."
13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
15 and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
DEFINE STAND: Remain faithful to Christ under pressure. The attack does not determine whom we trust, what we believe, how we live, or how we treat people.
"Spiritual victory is sometimes measured by what pressure could not make us abandon."
1. STAND FAITHFULLY
5:00-15:00 | PASTOR'S RIGHT | STEADY 3/5 | VERSES 14-16
TRUTH - When Lies Entangle You
14 Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness,
PICTURE: The belt gathered the loose robe and freed the soldier to move. Truth frees us from the lie and frees us to obey. See John 8:31-32
31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.
32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
PRACTICE: Identify the lie, determine what God has said, believe God above the feeling, take the next obedient step.
"Truth frees us from what would trip us so that we can stand against what attacks us."
RIGHTEOUSNESS - When Compromise Tempts You
DISTINCTION: Christ's righteousness answers condemnation; righteous living refuses compromise. Conviction calls us back to God. Condemnation tells us to hide.
"Integrity is the decision to remain faithful before the pressure ever arrives."
GOSPEL PEACE - When Conflict Destabilizes You
Peace with God gives firm footing. Refuse to turn a spiritual battle into a fleshly feud or another person into the enemy.
"A battle-ready believer does not use spiritual warfare as an excuse for unchristian conduct."
FAITH - When the Arrows Fly
Faith does not deny the attack; it refuses to let the attack redefine God. Trust His character when you cannot trace His hand.
"Faith interprets the attack through God's character, not God through the attack."
ASK SLOWLY: Where is pressure attempting to move you from truth, obedience, peace, or trust?
"Standing is not the absence of pressure. Standing is faithfulness under pressure."
TRANSITION: Paul now moves from the position we maintain to the action we take when danger closes in.
2. TAKE ACTION
VERSE 17: Take/receive the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit. The helmet protects. The sword answers.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
A. TAKE THE HELMET/GUARD YOUR MIND
VULNERABLE GROUND: A blow to the head could remove a soldier from the fight. The helmet could be hot and uncomfortable, but it became indispensable as danger approached.
"The helmet could feel most burdensome at the moment it became most indispensable."
THE ATTACK: Are you really forgiven? Does God still want you? Will anything change? Is continuing worth it?
SALVATION ANSWERS: Christ has rescued me. Christ presently holds me. Christ will finally deliver me. See 1 Thessalonians 5:8: the hope of salvation.
8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.
DISTINCTION: Truth asks, 'What has God said?' Salvation asks, 'Who am I - and where is my story going?'
"The hotter the battle, the more essential the hope of salvation."
PASTORAL / SOFT: Fatigue makes us vulnerable to thoughts we would normally reject.
"Do not make a permanent surrender during a temporary season of exhaustion."
B. TAKE THE SWORD - ANSWER THE ASSAULT
THE WEAPON: The Spirit supplies the sword; the Word of God gives the believer an answer. This is not a magical phrase, but God's truth applied to the specific assault.
JESUS - MATTHEW 4: Three attacks. Three Scripture answers. Jesus did not answer according to how He felt; He answered according to what God had spoken.
PRACTICE: Identify the lie -> locate the biblical truth -> bring that Word into the moment -> obey it.
"You cannot answer the enemy with a Word you do not know."
"Salvation guards your mind. Scripture gives you an answer."
RESPONSE AND INVITATION
QUESTION ONE: Where is pressure presently attempting to move me from faithfulness?
QUESTION TWO: What attack against my mind must be answered by the hope of salvation?
QUESTION THREE: What truth from God's Word must I take into this battle?
STAND: Refuse to surrender what Christ has established.
TAKE: Deliberately use what God has supplied.
GOSPEL: The helmet is salvation, not self-improvement. Before you can stand in Christ's victory, you must receive Christ's salvation: repent, believe, and surrender to Jesus.
