The Greatest Descent

Week 7

Philippians 2:5–11 ESV

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Big Idea

The pathway to God's greatest glory is willing obedience and humble surrender to Jesus.

Notice the progression.

Christ...

descended.

Served.

Obeyed.

Died.

Then...

God exalted Him.

That is Paul's argument.

Call to Worship

Good morning, Lighthouse.

Today we gather to worship the King who deserves every crown, every throne, and every song.

Yet before every knee bowed before Him...

He knelt to wash dirty feet.

Before heaven proclaimed His greatness...

He humbled Himself in obedience to the Father.

Today we worship the Savior who showed us that true greatness is found in humble obedience.

Let's lift high the name above every name—Jesus Christ our Lord.

Introduction

If someone followed you around for the next seven days, what would they conclude you're living for?

Would they say you're pursuing comfort?

Success?

Recognition?

Security?

Or would they walk away saying,

"That person lives to make much of Jesus."

Then transition:

That's exactly the question Paul answers in Philippians 2.

The world tells us greatness is found by climbing higher.

Jesus shows us greatness by coming lower

Paul says,

"This is the mindset I want you to have."

Not merely admire.

Not simply believe.

Adopt.

Live.

Follow.

Church, if chapter 2 ended at verse 4, we'd all ask,

"How?"

How do I consistently put others before myself?

How do I defeat pride?

How do I love difficult people?

Paul answers by pointing us to Jesus.

Not merely as our Savior.

But as our example.

Big Idea

Movement One

Greatness Begins With Surrender

(vv. 5–6)

Paul begins,

"Adopt the same attitude as that of Christ Jesus..."

Christianity isn't behavior modification.

It's learning to think like Christ.

Paul immediately reminds us who Jesus is.

He existed in the very form of God.

"Morphe."

Not appearance.

Essence.

Everything that makes God...

God...

belongs to Jesus.

He didn't become God.

He has always been God.

Yet Paul says,

"He did not consider equality with God as something to be achieved” meaning “exploited."

Jesus possessed every right.

Every privilege.

Every glory.

Yet He never clung selfishly to them.

Illustration

Imagine the owner of a Fortune 500 company quietly putting on a janitor's uniform and cleaning the bathrooms after everyone leaves—not for a publicity campaign, not because anyone asked him to, but because he genuinely wanted to serve his employees. People would be stunned because those with the highest position rarely choose the lowest place. Yet that illustration barely scratches the surface of what Jesus did. He didn't merely step down in status—He stepped from heaven into humanity.

Humility doesn't begin when you think less of yourself; it begins when you think more like Jesus.

Application

Every conflict in life eventually comes down to one question:

Will I insist on my rights...

or surrender them for God's glory?

Movement Two

Obedience Changes Everything

(vv. 7–8)

Paul now describes the greatest descent in history.

"He emptied Himself..."

Paul is not saying Jesus stopped being God.

He is saying Jesus willingly laid aside the independent exercise of His divine privileges.

The King became a servant.

The Creator entered creation.

The Lord became a slave.

Then Paul goes even lower.

"He humbled Himself..."

How?

"By becoming obedient..."

Obedience always costs something.

For Jesus...

it cost everything.

Even death.

Not just any death.

Death on a cross.

The cross wasn't merely painful.

It was shameful.

Romans reserved crucifixion for the lowest criminals.

Yet the sinless Son of God willingly went there for us.

Illustration

When firefighters enter a burning building, they don't ask whether the people trapped inside deserve to be rescued. They move toward the danger because someone else's life matters more than their own safety. Every act of rescue requires someone to move downward into danger so another can be brought out. The cross is the greatest rescue in history. Jesus willingly entered our brokenness so we could be brought into His life.

Obedience to God is never wasted, even when it is costly.

Application

Where is God calling you to obey today?

Forgive someone?

Serve quietly?

Confess sin?

Trust Him with your future?

Following Jesus will often cost your pride before it ever costs anything else.

Movement Three

Every Knee Will Bow

(vv. 9–11)

Then comes one of Scripture's greatest "therefores."

"Therefore..."

Because Jesus humbled Himself...

God highly exalted Him.

Notice something.

Jesus never exalted Himself.

The Father did.

The world tells us,

"Promote yourself."

God says,

"Humble yourself."

One day...

every ruler.

Every celebrity.

Every politician.

Every atheist.

Every king.

Every neighbor.

Every one of us...

will bow before Jesus Christ.

Some will bow with joy.

Others with regret.

But everyone will acknowledge the same truth.

Jesus Christ is Lord.

Not was.

Not will become.

Is.

Illustration

At championship games, everyone eventually stands when the winning team receives the trophy. Some cheer because they supported them all along. Others stand because the victory is undeniable. One day the universe will stand before King Jesus. Not because everyone chose Him in this life, but because His lordship will be unmistakable.

You can choose to bow before Jesus today in faith, or one day bow before Him in judgment—but everyone will bow.

Application

If Jesus truly is Lord...

Then He deserves more than an hour on Sunday.

He deserves your marriage.

Your family.

Your finances.

Your career.

Your future.

Your obedience.

Your worship.

Conclusion

Paul didn't give us this passage merely to admire Jesus.

He gave it so we would become more like Him.

The world says,

"Fight your way up."

Jesus says,

"Serve your way down."

The world says,

"Protect your rights."

Jesus says,

"Lay down your life."

The world says,

"Make your name great."

God says,

"I'll take care of that."

Let's return to our Big Idea.

The pathway to God's greatest glory is willing obedience and humble surrender to Jesus.

Gospel Invitation

This passage tells the greatest story ever told.

The eternal Son of God stepped into our world.

Lived the life we could never live.

Died the death we deserved.

Rose in victory.

And now reigns as Lord over all.

The same Jesus who humbled Himself for sinners now invites sinners to come to Him.

If you've never trusted Christ...

Today is the day to surrender.

Not merely to His forgiveness...

but to His lordship.

Invitation

Salvation

Bow your heart before Jesus today. Receive the forgiveness He purchased at the cross and the new life He secured through His resurrection.

Sanctification

Christian, where has pride replaced humble obedience? What area of your life are you still trying to control? Lay it before Christ today.

Service

This week, choose one intentional act of hidden humility. Serve someone who cannot repay you. Forgive someone who doesn't expect it. Love someone who may never thank you. Let the mindset of Christ become visible through your life.

Benediction

Lighthouse, go this week with the mind of Christ.

Walk in humility.

Serve with joy.

Obey without hesitation.

And may the Lord who humbled Himself for you be magnified through you until the day every knee bows and every tongue confesses that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
