James 1:22-25- The Mark of True Belief
A person buys top-tier workout programs, watches hours of exercise tutorials, learns the exact mechanics of every movement, and subscribes to health podcasts. They can explain nutrition down to the exact calorie. Yet, they never actually go to the gym or pick up a weight. They have all the information about fitness, but zero physical transformation.
They know they need change. They know what to do, but they don’t take action.
1. Belief in Action
a. Being committed to taking action
i. Being a hearer
1. A “hearer” knows who God is but has not applied knowledge to life.
2. A “hearer” hears what he wants to hear.
3. A “hearer” is not committed to change.
ii. Being a doer
1. A “doer” knows who God is and applies knowledge to life.
2. A “doer” hears and then commits to instruction.
b. Being committed to sanctification
i. Looking in the Mirror
1. The Mirror is not something of our own creation.
2. The mirror is not manipulated by what man says is right.
3. The mirror is from the perfect and holy God.
4. The mirror is scripture.
a. Perfect Law
b. The Law of Liberty
c. Persevering Law
Illustration: "The standard of righteousness isn't based on what the world dictates, nor on our own feelings about how we should live. True righteousness is grounded in the eternal, holy nature of God, who stands outside of creation to define what is right and wrong. The classic Twilight Zone episode 'Eye of the Beholder' illustrates this point: society may define beauty one way, but ultimate beauty—and ultimate truth—is defined solely by God."
1. Committed to nothing
5. A person who sees himself, takes notice, and then walks away without changing anything.
6. A person who forgets what he looks like. The idea being presented here is that he is a sinner, scared by the ugly marks of sin, but quickly forgets.
7. He is the same as the hearer.
ii. Committed to change
1. A person who sees himself takes notice of what is wrong, and then makes changes.
2. A person who sees his sin and is committed to putting away sin.
3. He is the same as the doer.
Illustration: "Returning to the start of the chapter, the testing of our faith is not purpose-less; it grows us into God's likeness. Testing reveals our lack of wisdom and draws us into deeper dependence on Him. Rather than being tossed about by life's storms, we are anchored by God's eternal promises. Wisdom is simply knowledge put into practice. When you take the knowledge of God and apply it personally to your life, you allow Him to do a transformative work only He can accomplish."
