Wednesday Night Prayer Service
Wednesday Night Prayer Service
His Protection Makes Us Courageous
His Presence Makes Us Glad
His Position Makes Us Rest
Questions
What does running to God as your refuge actually look like in everyday life?
What do you think biblical courage actually looks like when someone is genuinely afraid?
Why can the same situation create panic in one person and peace in another?
How can someone experience gladness in God without pretending that pain, grief, or disappointment are not real?
Why do you think “Be still, and know that I am God” is so often misunderstood?
Where do you see the clearest need for this message in our church right now?
What would it look like for us to live this week as though Psalm 46 is actually true?
Prayer Time
Psalm 46 begins:
“God is our refuge and strength,
a very present help in trouble.”
Before the psalmist talks about the earth giving way, the mountains falling, the waters roaring, or the nations raging, he begins with God.
That is where we need to begin tonight.
Most of us come into prayer ready to tell God everything that is wrong. We have a list. We have names. We have situations. Some of us have probably already told God how He needs to handle it.
But before we ask God to change anything, we need to remind ourselves of who He is.
He is our refuge.
He is our strength.
He is present in trouble.
He is the Lord of hosts, the Lord of armies, and He has never lost a battle.
Nothing has caught Him off guard this week. Nothing has threatened His throne. Nothing has happened that is outside of His authority.
The nations may rage, but God is still God.
The earth may give way, but God is still our refuge.
Everything around us may change, but God has not moved.
So for the next few minutes, do not ask God for anything. Simply praise Him for who He is.
Praise Him for His power.
Praise Him for His holiness.
Praise Him for His faithfulness.
Praise Him because He is near.
Praise Him because He is sovereign.
Praise Him because He has been good to you, even in seasons that were not good.
Let us turn our attention upward and worship the God who is our refuge and strength.

Praise Him for His presence in trouble.
Praise Him for His faithfulness in your life.
Praise Him because He is still on the throne.
Let us pray.
DOWNWARD
DOWNWARD
Once we look upward and remember who God is, we have to look downward and humble ourselves before Him.
Psalm 46 says:
“Be still, and know that I am God.”
It looks like its all over but the crying for Jerusalem. But God tells them to be still and know that I am God.
That means we have to stop acting like we are.
Some of us have been carrying things God never asked us to carry. We have worried, panicked, tried to control every outcome, and then wondered why we are exhausted.
We have trusted our plans more than His providence.
We have listened to fear more than we have listened to our Father.
We have allowed the noise around us to become chaos within us.
And instead of running to God as our refuge, we have run to distractions, people, money, work, anger, or anything else that makes us feel like we are in control.
So this is our time to confess.
Not everybody else’s sin.
Not what is wrong with the country.
Not what somebody else needs to fix.
This is the moment for us to get honest about what is wrong in us.
Where have you allowed fear to control you?
Where have you refused to trust God?
What outcome are you trying to control?
What has God told you to do that you have delayed, ignored, or made excuses about?
Psalm 46 reminds us that He is God, and we are not.
That is not bad news. That is freedom.
We can stop trying to carry the universe. The position has already been filled.
So for the next few minutes, humble yourself before the Lord.
Confess where you have trusted yourself instead of Him.
Confess where fear has controlled you.
Confess where you have resisted His voice.
Ask Him to forgive you and help you surrender control back to Him.

Confess where fear has controlled your thoughts or decisions.
Confess where you have trusted yourself instead of God.
Confess what you have been trying to control.
Confess any area where you have delayed obedience.
Ask God to help you be still and surrender to His authority.
Let us pray.
INWARD
INWARD
We have looked upward at who God is, and downward as we humbled ourselves before Him.
Now we are going to pray inward.
Psalm 46 says:
“Therefore we will not fear though the earth gives way.”
That does not mean frightening things never happen. It means fear does not have to control us when they do.
The problem is that we often allow the chaos around us to become chaos within us.
We carry the pressure.
We replay the worst-case scenario.
We listen to every voice except the voice of our Father.
So in this time of prayer, ask God to work in you.
Ask Him to replace fear with faith.
Ask Him to give you courage to obey even when you are afraid.
Ask Him to help you recognize His presence in the middle of what you are facing.
Ask Him to give you rest in the places where you do not know what is going to happen next.
Some of us do not need God to immediately change our circumstances. We need Him to change the way we are walking through them.
We need a steady heart.
We need a clear mind.
We need the strength to keep moving.
We need to hear the voice of our Father over all the noise.
So bring your heart before the Lord.
Ask Him to show you where fear has taken hold.
Ask Him to strengthen what has become weak.
Ask Him to produce courage, gladness, and rest within you.

Ask Him to help you recognize His presence.

Ask Him to strengthen you for whatever you are facing.
Let us pray.
OUTWARD
OUTWARD
We have prayed upward, downward, and inward.
Now we are going to turn our attention outward and pray for the people around us.
Psalm 46 says:
“The Lord of hosts is with us;
the God of Jacob is our fortress.”
That promise is not only for us individually. It is for God’s people together.
So first, we are going to pray through the prayer request list.
Every name on that list represents a real person carrying something heavy. There are people facing sickness, grief, decisions, family struggles, financial pressure, and situations most of us may never fully understand.
Pray that God would be their refuge and strength.
Pray for healing where healing is needed.
Pray for comfort where there has been loss.
Pray for wisdom where decisions have to be made.
Pray that they would know that God is near in the middle of their trouble.
We also need to pray for our community.
There are families all around us who are hurting, afraid, lonely, and looking for hope in places that cannot provide it.
Pray for San Mateo, Oceanway, and the surrounding community.
Pray for our neighbors.
Pray for local churches to remain faithful to the gospel.
Pray for opportunities for us to serve people, share Christ, and be the kind of church that does more than talk about loving the community.
And as school begins again, we need to pray for our faculty, teachers, staff, and students.
For some of them, they are excited.
For some of them, Tuesday is coming a little too quickly.
Pray for the teachers and faculty as they prepare to lead, teach, and care for students.
Pray for patience, wisdom, endurance, and strength.
Pray for the students returning to classrooms.
Pray that God would protect them, guide their friendships, help them make wise decisions, and give them courage to live for Christ.
Pray for students who are anxious, students who feel alone, and students walking into difficult situations at home or at school.
Pray that our Christian teachers and students would be a light.
Pray that they would not be controlled by fear, but would remember that the Lord of hosts is with them.

THANKSGIVING
THANKSGIVING
We have prayed upward, downward, inward, and outward.
Now we are going to close by thanking God for what He has done.
Psalm 46 says:
“Come, behold the works of the Lord.”
Sometimes we spend so much time looking at what is wrong that we forget to look back at everything God has already done.
He has been faithful.
He has answered prayers.
He has carried us through things we did not think we could make it through.
He has protected us in ways we saw, and probably in a whole lot of ways we never even knew about.
He has provided for us.
He has forgiven us.
He has saved us through Jesus Christ.
And even in the seasons when He did not change the situation the way we wanted, He stayed with us in the middle of it.
The Lord has been our refuge.
He has been our strength.
He has been present in trouble.
So before we leave tonight, let us take time to thank Him.
Thank Him for answered prayers.
Thank Him for the prayers He answered differently than you expected.
Thank Him for the people He has placed in your life.
Thank Him for this church and what He is doing among us.
Thank Him for every person who has been saved, baptized, restored, encouraged, or strengthened.
Thank Him for His faithfulness in the past, His presence with us right now, and His promises for the future.
The earth may move. The mountains may fall. The nations may rage. Tuesday is still coming.
But the Lord of hosts is with us.
The God of Jacob is our fortress.
