Matthew 22:34-46
Matthew 22:34-46
Last time we saw Grilling Jesus Part 1
Taxed to Death 15-33
Pharisees, who were nationalists, Herodians (political, supported Herod) Sadducees, people watch and Jesus and the disciples. They are in Jerusalem, in the temple and putting Himself on display, as a epic event in human history. Jesus changes what some call dispensations of how God interacts with His creation. But its always been about faith.
Grilling Jesus Pt 2 15-46, Perfect Recipe 34-40, Perfect Meal 41-46
Matthew 22:34–36 “ But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?””
We see this in Mark as well. While the crowd of all those who challenged Jesus are still there, there were some Pharisees not present who hear that Jesus refuses to get on the grill. So they come to “fix” it.
Like the vinedresser whose son was killed in the parable, Psalm 2:2–3 “ The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the Lord and against His Anointed, saying, 3 “Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.””
One of them happens to be a lawyer a scribe. They didn’t just memorize the scriptures, they studied the application of it. He is even to the Pharisees and expert in the Law.
in v35 he is doing this not to know but to test.
Also, Jesus said in Matthew 5:17 “ “Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.” so this expert might be using the question to undermine Jesus’ knowledge of the law. Also this gives us context for this question. Which will come into play in our study.
In mark we read Mark 12:32–34 “ So the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He. 33 And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” But after that no one dared question Him.”
Matthew 22:37–38 “ Jesus said to him, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and great commandment.”
Now we can just accept this statement on its face value, but I don’t think the context allows this. Remember the law was a task master to show how we fail and cannot approach God.
Jesus points out that even this scribe is far from the Father. You shall what the Lord your God? Love. How much heart, soul, mind? If you sinned in any way with this, you failed. This week I have sinned in all these things. No you cant have the details lol
This is a commandment. To not do this is to be guilty of sin. Paul explained to the church in Galatia, (htt) Galatians 3:23–25 “But before faith came, we were kept under guard by the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be revealed. 24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor.”
if there was a law, salvation would've come through it. get that. we obey Him because we love Him, Not to save ourselves.
Matthew 22:39–40 “ And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.””
Now we are made to be bearers of His image. Genesis 1:27 “ So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.” so thats why we love those around us. Leviticus 19:18 “ You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord.”
Jesus said our neighbors are those we Luke 10:36–37 “ So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” 37 And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.””
When we treat every person, no matter their state, perfectly, we have met the requirements of the law. I don’t know about you, but we have all sinned and fallen short. All 613 laws spring from this. The adam and eve of the law. It begins with the tree of the knowledge of good/evil. The law puts on display that we are dependent on him.

Jesus stirs the coals Matthew 22:41–42 “ While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them, 42 saying, “What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?” They said to Him, “The Son of David.””
Jesus isn’t debating, He begins again, to teach, which He’s been doing the whole time. This encounter is also recorded in Mark and Luke
Their response is biblical but not. He asks and they respond treating Ps110 as referring to Messiah. though many but not all the Pharisees/Scribes thought that Psalm 110 is just that.
Line of David, yes. They keep denying that Jesus could be the messiah. They have accused Him of blasphemy, because He has as openly said that He is more than just a prophet, teacher, etc. He is Yahweh. Lord. This is explaining the WHAT of Christ
They say son of David, as in related to, they thought couldn't be Messiah because no Jewish father, but we know from the Talmud that they said he was the son of a Roman soldier also, Matthew's genealogy traces his legal line through King Jeconiah (Jehoiachin), whose royal line was cursed in Jeremiah 22:30
First, there is good evidence that this curse was not eternal, as the critics claim. In fact, this curse was given to Jehoiakim (Jehoiachin’s father) as well. God told Jehoiakim, “He shall have no one to sit on the throne of David” (Jer. 36:30). However, obviously, his son did sit on the throne.
Second, there is good evidence that Jehoiachin repented later in life and the curse was lifted. In Jeremiah 52:31-34, we read that Jehoiachin was blessed after he was exiled. Moreover, when God cursed Jehoiachin, he told him “Even though Coniah [Jehoichin] the son of Jehoiakim king of Judah were a signet ring on My right hand, yet I would pull you off” (Jer. 22:24). However, God told his grandson, “I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you’” (Hag. 2:23). God used the same imagery of the signet ring –first as a punishment –then as a restoration.
Third, since Jesus was born of a virgin, we should not trace his genealogy through Joseph –but Mary. In Luke 3:23, we read that Jesus was “as was supposed, the son of Joseph.” In other words, Jesus was not truly the son of Joseph, because he was born of a virgin. Luke is giving a genealogy of Mary –not Joseph. Therefore, Jesus was the legal heir of Jehoiachin, but he was not his genetic heir.
Matthew 1:1 “ The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the Son of David, the Son of Abraham:” the people cried Matthew 21:9 “ Then the multitudes who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’ Hosanna in the highest!””
Matthew 22:43–45 “ He said to them, “How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying: 44 ‘The Lord said to my Lord, “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool” ’? 45 If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?””
The Lord (as they used it, Heb Adonai, Gr. Kurios, is Yahweh (Jehovah). This again, isn’t about a gotcha, is about Christology -
2 Samuel 7:13–17 “ He shall build a house for My name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be his Father, and he shall be My son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men and with the blows of the sons of men. 15 But My mercy shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ” 17 According to all these words and according to all this vision, so Nathan spoke to David.”
Isaiah 11:1, 10 “ There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse, And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.” “10 “And in that day there shall be a Root of Jesse, Who shall stand as a banner to the people; For the Gentiles shall seek Him, And His resting place shall be glorious.””
finally Jeremiah 23:5–6 “ “Behold, the days are coming,” says the Lord, “That I will raise to David a Branch of righteousness; A King shall reign and prosper, And execute judgment and righteousness in the earth. 6 In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell safely; Now this is His name by which He will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS”
Matthew 22:46 “ And no one was able to answer Him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare question Him anymore.”
With this question He shows the lack of knowledge of those who claim to be experts in the Law. They occasionally get it, but just almost
He also convicts them of the sin of rejecting Him, that its not a matter of law but of heart. They don’t want Him to be messiah, because they have declared Him unfit by way of blasphemy because they reject the scriptures.
John 5:36–38 “ But I have a greater witness than John’s; for the works which the Father has given Me to finish—the very works that I do—bear witness of Me, that the Father has sent Me. 37 And the Father Himself, who sent Me, has testified of Me. You have neither heard His voice at any time, nor seen His form. 38 But you do not have His word abiding in you, because whom He sent, Him you do not believe.”
Jesus, “the man” had no training, no schooling, except that of the common Jew, yet he confounded the cream of the crop of jewish theologians/scholars.
Their silence and plotting shows the utter power of the teachings of Christ. Its why those who hear Him today, still come to faith in Jesus Christ.
