The Destruction of Nineveh (vv. 1-4)

There is no questioning the wickedness of the city and thus the earned punishment from God (v. 1)
The destruction from God is frightening and overwhelming (v. 2) -> more than physical torment!
The destruction is bloody and violent (v. 3) -> nothing is withheld, and the dead pile in heaps
While a depiction of Nineveh, this serves as a great depiction of hell as well, a place of heaping death
The harlot who has enticed nations will be destroyed (v. 4)
Nineveh enticed poorer nations (including Judah), and practiced religious prostitution (literally)
She is a harlot that will destroy many others with her -> do not be deceived (Prov. 5:3-4)!

The Humiliation of Nineveh (vv. 5-7)

God is against those who reject Him -> this cannot be stated enough times (v. 5)!
Their shame and weakness will be on full display for all to see (v. 5) -> though they once were regarded, they will be embarrassed!
They will be made a spectacle of (v. 6) -> in the ultimate sense, every human who ever lived will witness this spectacle!
They will be an embarrassment and cause others to recoil away (v. 7) -> there will be no pity shown!

The Weakness of Nineveh and Hopelessness of Defense (vv. 8-19)

Are you better than those who have gone before you on this same path (vv. 8-10)?
No matter what good deed you have done, others have done more and still rot in hell eternally
You are not mightier than those before you!
You will try to hide to no avail (v. 11) -> wherever you go, a God of wrath will be there (Is. 2:12-22)
You will try to shield yourself, but your defenses are useless (v. 12) -> in fact, they will only turn against you
You will try to fight, but your weakness will stop any success (v. 13)
You will be as a staggering drunk, panicked fugitive, trembling fig tree, feeble woman, and open city before a holy God! (vv. 11-13)
You will prepare yourself to no avail (vv. 14-15) -> in the midst of your preparation and strength, God will cut you down
Anyone you may have put your hope in will flee, and you will be totally abandoned (vv. 16-17)
There is no remedy for this destruction (vv. 18-19)
Nor is there any sorrow, but rather rejoicing
No longer will the people of God be faced with those who are trying to overthrow their God!

Do not allow yourself to be in such a position
Trust Christ before your opportunity is removed (2 Cor. 6:2)!
