John 13:21–30 ESV
21 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table at Jesus’ side, 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. 25 So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.
Ok, here we have the Last Supper,
We know this because verse 1
which we read last week
mentioned that the foot washing
took place “before” the Passover feast
One thing you may notice about John’s account
Is that he does not mention communion here at all.
he does foreshadow communion back in chapter 6
when he talks about how Jesus said that his body is bread
and that you must eat his flesh
And drink his blood
and they all said, this is a hard saying
and the Bible says that many disciples stopped following him at that time
because they did not accept that teaching
So, rather than restate communion here
John choose to focus on the footwashing scene
which the other gospels do not mention
and John also gives a little more detail about Judas being ID’d
as the traitor
The other gospels just mention that all the disciples were asking
“Is it I”, “is it I?”
But John tells us that Peter motions to “the disciple whom Jesus loved”
Which is of course, John.
So, John is referring to himself as the disciple whom Jesus loved
and John is the one in vs 23-25 being referred to as
the one at Jesus’ side
and the one being motioned to by Peter
and the one who is leaning against Jesus
and asks the question, “Lord who is it?”
So, it was John who apparently got the news first
that it was Judas who would betray Jesus
And Jesus tells John that he will be the one
who gets the piece of bread that Jesus dipped his hand into grab
Right when Jesus did that,
The Bible says that Satan entered Judas
now, Judas already had it in his heart to do this
but it was not until that moment that Satan entered him
I believe that Satan needed permission from Jesus
Just like he did when he wanted to curse Job
and while he may have been tempting him to betray Jesus
for weeks, months, or even the whole 3 years
it was not until that night that Satan possessed Judas
and used him to get Jesus arrested.
And Jesus says in vs 27,
Go do what you were going to do
It was at that command
that Satan was given permission
to do what he wanted to do
and what I think Satan assumed was in his best interest
If the devil had known that the death of Jesus
was going to bring salvation to every man
he wouldn’t have done it
So, that part of God’s plan was not revealed to Satan
Or he wouldn’t have done it
and when he did do it
he needed Jesus to give him permission
You would think that would have been a clue
that maybe this plan of mine isn’t going to work out for me
When I’m playing chess against a lower rated player
I can typically spot a nice tactical move 3 or 4 moves ahead
that they are likely not going to see
and to get them distracted
I will set it up by luring them into taking my rook or my queen
I did this to someone a week ago at work
or said, let’s see how good you are
and I said, look, if you don’t actively study the game
don’t be surprised if this ends quickly
I’m not being arrogant, i just want to you understand
And on move 7 I gave him my queen for free
and on move 9 I checkmated him.
For referrence, most of my games against equal opponents
last around 30-50 moves
and would sometimes last longer if we didn’t resign when we know we’ve lost.
and we actually know when we’ve lost in most cases
but After that 9 move game
I said, just a small tip
If you suspect the person you are playing is better than you
and they offer you a free queen
that queen is never free.
When Jesus said… go do what you were going to do
He wasn’t talking to Judas
He was talking to the devil in him
and that was Jesus offering the devil a free queen
and it was something the devil could not resist
but it wasn’t really free at all
because taking that “queen”
lost him the keys to his own house.
Right after receiving the morsel of bread
Judas immediately went out acc. vs 30.
It does not say
Right after eating it, he left.
It says, right after receiving the bread, he left.
Jesus gave him the bread of communion
and I believe Judas left without eating the bread Jesus gave him at the last supper.
John 6:55–56 ESV
55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him.
John 6:60 ESV
60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”
John 6:61–64 ESV
61 But Jesus, knowing in himself that his disciples were grumbling about this, said to them, “Do you take offense at this? 62 Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.)
John 6:70 ESV
70 Jesus answered them, “Did I not choose you, the twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.”
So, it seems John is directly tying these two events together
The teaching about eating the bread of Jesus
and Judas leaving right when Jesus gives him Bread.
And, here I want to discuss something that is profoundly amazing to me.
Jesus didn’t just give Judas Bread…
Jesus washed his feet
And, look closely at John 6.70…
“Did I not choose you?”
For anyone who things that Jesus only chooses the best
Or only chooses the already saved
or only chooses those he knows will make it…
John 6.70 says… Did I not choose you, the 12…
and yet, one of you is a devil.
Jesus didn’t just choose Judas.
Jesus put Judas in charge of the moneybag
He gave him a job that related to his own weakness
So, before you start making excuses about what God has called you to do
understand this…
He doesn’t often call you to do something you are already good at…
He calls you to things you are weak at
and his goal is to get you to trust in Him through your weakness
And… Judas, whose weakness was greed
was placed in charge of the moneybag
and Jesus gave him a choice
take this bread and be in communion with me
or walk away.
And Judas chose, hear me, he chose to walk away.
Jesus chose Judas
and Judas chose 30 pieces of silver.
I wish that I had time to walk through Zechariah
But if you are taking notes
go read Zechariah 11.7-14
in a modern english translation
It gave me chills how accurate it is
and you can read it in the KJV if you want
but it lands better in something like the ESV
I’ve read it 100 times in the KJV
and didn’t quite make the connections I made with a modern english version
because of the archaic uses of the words
Just as an example, it uses the word price
in the KJV to translate the Hebrew word for “wage”
and we don’t really use “price” that way any more
But read that passage in light of what is happening here with Judas
John 13:31–32 ESV
31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once.
So, in verse 31, it is says it is time to be glorfied
It was “coming”, and now the time is here
Because Judas has just gone out to betray him
And Jesus says that God is glorified “IN” in him.
This is not God the Son in the Son of God
It is God the Father
As we will see in the next chapter
Jesus repeats this phrase
but says
The Father is in me
and I am in the Father
How is this possible?
Well, we are all in the father
Paul says it is in Him we move and live and have our being
So that isn’t strange to say that Jesus is in the Father
the extraordinary claim is that the Father is in him
So, here, vs 31 says The son is glorfied
and God (aka the Father) is gloried in the Son.
And vs 32 says the opposite
The Son is also glorified in the Father
And Jesus says this will happen quickly
because it is happening that very night.
John 13:33 ESV
33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’
This might be strange to hear Jesus say,
that the disciples can’t come where he is going.
But, in just a few verses he explains why
He is going to tell them that where he is going
is to prepare a place for them
and that he would come back and take them to that place.
So, he is really saying
You can’t go there right now
but you will go there soon.
John 13:34–35 ESV
34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Now, this is the hardest commandment in the Bible
Jesus says this is a New Commandment
and it comes from Jesus himself
and the commandment is to love each other
“Just as”
Not sorta
not kinda
Not close enough
but “Just as” I have loved you
And how did God love us?
John 3.16…
for God so loved the world that he gave his only begott…
right?
So, he loved us by dying for us.
And says… now you love each other the same way
“Just as” I loved you.
We won’t find out how this is physically possible
until we read John’s other letter
In 1 John chapter 4
John tells us that God showed his love to us
but dying on the cross for us
and then in the same chapter
it says, and then he gave us HIS love
by putting HIS spirit in us.
It doesn’t say that he gave us love like his
or made our love be as good as his love
but rather
he put his love for the world into us
That’s why when you have the Holy Spirit inside of you
you have God’s love inside of you
And you outta be looking at people in this world
as sheep without a shepherd
and wanting to give them what Jesus gave you
and if you don’t feel that way
then maybe it is because it has been too long
since you let the Spirit of God fill you up with his love
Jesus says, you want to know who MY disciples are
They are the ones that love each other
the way that I loved them.
John 13:36–38 ESV
36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” 37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times.
Peter was ready to follow Jesus that day
but Peter did not know where Jesus was about to go
Jesus was going to the cross
and he said, you cannot follow me now
but you will follow me later
and history tells us that Peter did die on a cross
and requested to be hung upside down
And I think that he did that
because he did not want to people
to think that we needed to follow Jesus by actually dying on a cross
Some people have incorrectly thought that
but Jesus said… you cannot follow me to the cross
We cannot die for our own sins
no matter how much we think we deserve it
and we do deserve it
we cannot pay for our own sins
and if we could
Jesus died in vain
He died because we needed a Savior
and we would be lost without his death
Peter says he would lay down his life for Jesus
but Jesus had to lay down his life for Peter
otherwise there would be no payment for our sins
Peter understood that later
but he did not understand it in that moment
and Jesus then tells Peter he would deny him 3 times that night
And I think the point of that was for Peter to look back on that night
and remember why it was Jesus who had to die for Peter
and not Peter who had to die for Jesus
because one of those men was without any sin
and one of them would sin multiple times that very night
Even if Peter were to die for Jesus
Peter’s death would not have even paid for Peter’s sins
Let alone the sins of the whole world
Peter needed Jesus to die
and he would later realize why it had to be that way
But that night, he would always remember
Jesus was without sin his whole life
and I couldn’t go one night without sinning multiple times
That’s why Jesus came to save us
And I’m so thankful that he did.
Next week, we start one of my favorite chapters
but I doubt very seriously we will finish it in one week
there is so much going on in chapter 14.
I can’t wait to dig in.
