Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.
By this we know that we abide in him and he in us, because he has given us of his Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.

It encourages them to reflect on their relationships with others and challenges them to show true love, especially in times of conflict or difficulty, ultimately deepening their connection with God.
Teaching: The sermon teaches that our ability to love others is directly linked to our experience of God's love in our lives. It underscores that love is not merely an emotion but an action that flows from understanding and receiving God's love through the Holy Spirit.
How this passage could point to Christ: The focus on love in this passage connects to the greater narrative of Scripture where Christ epitomizes God's love, establishing a framework for our understanding of loving others as Christ loves us. Christ's sacrifice is the ultimate example of love and is the foundation for our ability to love.
Big Idea: Abiding in God entails a commitment to embody His love, evidenced through our actions toward others, empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Recommended Study: As you prepare this sermon, consider exploring the Greek terms for love used in this passage through your Logos library to gain deeper insights into the nature of God’s love. Additionally, examining the historical context of the early church's struggles with love and community may provide valuable illustrations. Look into commentary resources that focus on the relationship between the Holy Spirit and love to better articulate how abiding in God translates into real-world applications.
1. Love: Commanded and Empowered
1. Love: Commanded and Empowered
1 John 4:11-13
You could emphasize that abiding in love is not just a suggestion but a commandment. This section shows us that our love for others is evidence of God's Spirit dwelling in us. Perhaps you can illustrate how our ability to love others transforms by accepting God’s love. Without the Spirit, our love remains incomplete, but through Him, we reflect God's character and purpose. We must actively choose to abide, as it strengthens our bonds with both God and others.
2. Love: Witness and Testimony
2. Love: Witness and Testimony
1 John 4:14-16
This point could discuss how knowing God's love inspires us to proclaim the truth of His love in Christ. We witness that the Father sent the Son as the Savior, motivating us to share this love with others. Here, maybe highlight how this is not merely claiming knowledge but living it. Through loving, we testify of God's abiding presence. Our love becomes a testimony to the world that God indeed lives in us, making us confident in His eternal promise.
3. Love: Fearless and Assured
3. Love: Fearless and Assured
1 John 4:17-18
Perhaps you can suggest that true love casts out fear within us. By perfecting in love, fear dissipates and makes room for trust in God’s eternal judgment. Maybe explain that through the Holy Spirit, our hearts become fearless as we mature in understanding God’s sacrificial love. Embrace the assurance of salvation, knowing that fear cannot coexist with God’s pure love. This allows us to face life’s challenges with bravery and compassion.
4. Love: Authentic and Renewing
4. Love: Authentic and Renewing
1 John 4:19-21
You might conclude by stressing the authenticity of our love for God manifesting in love for others. We cannot claim to love God while ignoring the needs of those around us. Perhaps demonstrate how loving others becomes an act of integrity aligned with divine truth. The Holy Spirit enables us to love genuinely, fostering community and unity. Our relationship with God, through love, compels us towards reciprocal action amongst His children.
At work, if you experience a lack of gratitude for the extra help you provide, initiate a 'gratitude moment' in team meetings. Encourage colleagues to share one positive thing about each other’s contributions, creating an environment of appreciation. This simple act not only fosters love in a seemingly thankless environment but reflects the biblical principle of serving others in Colossians 3:23. You may not receive recognition now, but your efforts could inspire a culture of gratitude.
In church, when your acts of service go unnoticed, take time to pray for those you serve, including leaders and fellow members. Use this time to intentionally ask God to bless their lives and ministry. This discipline shows genuine love and fosters a community spirit without needing a return. As 1 Peter 4:10 teaches, serving others with your gifts glorifies God, even if the recognition doesn’t come in the way you expect.
In your public interactions, you might encounter unkindness or indifference in people. Choose to respond with kindness by paying for someone's coffee or helping someone with their groceries. When confronted with negativity, your act of love can shift the atmosphere. It’s an application of love that mirrors Matthew 5:44, where Jesus calls us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. Your actions can sow seeds of kindness that reflect Christ’s love.
If a family member has been distant or less affectionate, take it upon yourself to initiate a family game night. Create an inviting atmosphere with their favorite snacks and activities. This effort shows unwavering love and commitment to family unity even in challenging times. By taking the first step, you demonstrate the essence of unconditional love Christ shows us, reinforcing family ties and encouraging others to engage more actively.
