Bless the Lord, O My Soul,
When the Lord blesses us, he reviews our needs and responds to them; likewise, when we bless the Lord we review his excellencies and respond to them.
The praise towards God is focused on who He is and what He has done.
The “name” of the Lord calls to remembrance all of his perfections and acts of deliverance.
So this is a Psalm of remembrance of the good things that God has done. We are not to forget what He has done. This is as much about what He will do, but reflecting on what He has done and why we should praise Him.
List the attributes of God in this Psalm
Righteous, Just, Compassionate, Gracious, Slow to Anger, Abounding in Lovingkindness, Sovereign, Forgiving
God’s mercy is not getting what we deserve
God’s grace is getting what we don’t deserve.
List the weaknesses of man in the Psalm
sin filled, diseased, dead, weak, oppressed, of dust, like grass, transitory
List the benefits of God in this Psalm
pardoned, healed, redeemed, crowned, satisfied, renewed, restored, justice received, forgiven,
Contrast of our transient nature to God’s eternal lovingkindness
Man’s weakness appeals to God’s compassion.
Ends with the Lord is King...and in control.
He will work all things out according to His master plan.
Praise is the response of awe for God while reflecting on what the Lord has done for His people.
It’s remembering that while we change and our circumstances change and life always seems to be in flux, God never changes and will always remain the same.
This is alluded to in vs. 14-17 comparing our mortal, brief and transitory life with his lovingkindness that is eternal.
And verse 19 that reminds us that He has established His throne and as King He rules over all.
That gives us a firm foundation to rest upon.
When everything around us is life shifting sand, God remains constant.
The opposite of praise is forgetfulness.
To forget all He has done.
Sometimes we forget by taking what He has done for granted.
Sometimes we forget by living our lives as if He had never paid such a high price for our salvation.
Sometimes we forget by complaining and not being thankful for all He’s done and is doing.
Sometimes that forgetting happens when we are in the midst of the storm and can’t see a way out.
We forget what God has done in the past.
But if God is the same God He was in the past, He will continue to do what He has done before.
If He has forgiven me before He will forgive me again.
If He has healed me before, He will heal me again.
If He has saved me before He will save me again.
If He has blessed us with His lovingkindness and compassion before, He will do it again.
If He has satisfied us with good things before, He will satisfy us with good things again.
If he has renewed our strength before, He will do so again.
The challenge for us in receiving all of that is that He doesn’t always bring those things about the same way He brought them about before.
He doesn’t change, but the way He does things might. His salvation and healing might look a little different this time around.
His blessings and renewal of strength might come in a different way than they did before.
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways And My thoughts than your thoughts.
These benefits flow out of what He has done for us.
They are only for those who “fear Him” (vs. 13, 17, 18)
It’s for those who are in a covenantal relationship with Him.
If you have placed your faith in Jesus Christ, Jesus’ blood enacts the new covenant.
We are brought into a restored relationship to the Father through the blood of Jesus, and all these things become a blessing, a benefit, of that covenant.
In and of ourselves, we can’t earn these favors and we sure don’t deserve it, but because of the worthiness of Christ and the acceptance of His sacrifice for us, we can receive these benefits.
It’s like we have signed up for the program and these are the member benefits.
And He sustains the relationship by being forgiving, loving, and full of compassion but also just.
Heals (rapha) - the process of healing, being restored to health, made healthy, usable, fertile.

And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body.
For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ; who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject all things to Himself.
The thought in this Psalm is not that God will heal you of all your diseases, but that when you have been healed, remember that it was He who healed you. In other words, “Don’t forget that all of the diseases you have been healed from was because God ultimately did it, and we are to thank Him for it.”
He is the healer of the soul as well as the body. Such health as we’ve been given is a gift from God and He is to be praised for it.
David may have been saved from the brink of death, physically, to that point, but this is a reflection of past events, not a guarantee of what might come.
vs 3 is connected to vs 4: God has brought us back from the very brink of death.
But the pit of death here is Sheol in particular, the grave, where the dead go when they die.\
But this has metaphorically has meant to be spared from spiritual death.
which ties into the kinsman redeemer.
vs 4 - to redeem or act as a kinsman redeemer - Jesus is our kinsman redeemer.
It’s part of the reason He had to come in the flesh.
Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.
vs. 4 - crowns you with lovingkindness and compassion
blesses you with lovingkindness and compassion.
when you are struggling with disease and discouragement
when you find yourself wandering back to the pit
His love and compassion scoop down and rescues you once again.
HIs goodness and mercy will follow you all the days of your life.
You are still blessed and His love and compassion are still active in your life, even if you are not physically healed.
Instead of being crowned with sin, guilt, and shame, we are crowned with lovingkindness and compassion
vs 5 - satisfies your years with good things.
not everything is good, but the good He does bring is satisfying.
and when we are satisfied, our youth is renewed.
we are energized and strengthened physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually
Strength renewed like the eagles - Is 40:29
He gives strength to the weary, And to him who lacks might He increases power. Though youths grow weary and tired, And vigorous young men stumble badly, Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary.
Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day.
Sickness, violence, and decay may affect the body, but they cannot touch the spirit.
