READ 1

I. We ARE SINNERS VS 8 & 10

1. THOSE WHO CLAIM TO HAVE NO SIN VS 8

-That is…this is a reference to those who claim they have committed no sin since they were saved or been elevated spiritual.
Gnosticism - believed they attained such a spiritual elevation that they no longer had any sin in their lives.
-They ignored the sin they had because they felt like they had risen to an elite spiritual status.
-They would claim to walk in the light while navigating the darkness.

2. THOSE WHO CLIAM THAT HAVE NEVER SINNED VS 10

The first group are those who believe they have arraigned spiritual and do not sin thereafter...
This group are those would believe they have NEVER SINNED.
-While all this may sound great, there are at least 2 problems.
It is not practical.
I don’t care how long you have been a believer…a church member…how many times you have read the Bible…what your prayer life looks like…ON THIS SIDE OF ETERNITY YOU WILL NEVER BE COMPLETELY SINLESS.
TO CLAIM SINLESSNESS IS TO.
Misevaluate your own spiritual standing.
Miss the character and nature of God…not coming to grips with His Holiness and his righteous standards.
Causes you to deceive yourselves.
IT IS NOT BIBLICAL.
The Bible clearly teaches the depravity of man.
Romans 3:10–23 ESV
as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” “Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues to deceive.” “The venom of asps is under their lips.” “Their mouth is full of curses and bitterness.” “Their feet are swift to shed blood; in their paths are ruin and misery, and the way of peace they have not known.” “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
There is none righteous, not even one.
FOR ALL HAVE SINNED…ALL…FOR ALL HAVE SINNED....ALL HAVE SINNED and fall short of the glory of God.

ILLUSTRATION: MAGGIE MCLAIN’S SONG INVITE

-"Down to the River to Pray"
- before she started to sing she said "I've got something to say .. I want to invite all you mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers and sinners to sing along with me"
-IF the Apostle John were in the audiance he would have given a hardy AMEN.....
THATS GOOD THEOLOGY!
if anybody sang along....rest assured they were sinners.
Paul speaks of Sin in his own life in
Romans 7:17–19 ESV
So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing.
-TOO MANY PEOPLE TRY TO DO…THEIR WAY INTO HEAVEN.
-They place exteral restrictions upon themselves.
-It makes them feel good for a while.
-Dont listen to this
-Dont watch that.
-Wear certain kinds of clothes
-Dont cut your hair.
-Dont grow your hair long.
-Dont go to that kind of church.
-AND IT NEVER MEETS THE NEEDS THEY HAVE IN THEIR LIFE…SO THEY CONTINUE TO ADD REGULATION UPONE REGULATION UNTIL FINALLY THEY GIVE UP.
-The burden becomes too much and the find themeslves still neck deep in their sin.
DEAR BROTHER OR SISTER…HEAR ME.
WE. ARE. SINNERS.
LEGALISTIC REGULATIONS ONLY SERVES FOR A SEASON, AT BEST, TO MERELY RESTRAIN OUR SINFUL HEARTS…BUT IT CAN NEVER SAVE US.
THIS IS WHY WE NEED THE GOSPEL…IT YOU ARE CLINGING TO YOUR OWN BEHAVIOR AS YOUR ONLY HOPE OF SALVATION YOU HAVE NO HOPE
…CLING TO CHRIST...
YES A SAVED MAN SHOULD BE OBEDIANT TO CHRIST, BUT YOU WILL NEVER BE PERFECTLY SINLESS ON THIS SIDE OF HEAVEN.
WE NEED THE GOSPEL!

I. WE ARE SINNERS

2. THERE IS A SAVIOR. Vs 9

The first group are those who believe they have arraigned spiritual and do not sin thereafter...
1. Who is he that is faithful and just and forgiving?
Vs 9 HE IS FAITHFUL…who is faithful
The answer is in verse 7....THE BLOOD OF WHO?
-NOTICE HOW THE TWO VERSES ARE LINKED?
-VERSE 7 “CLEANSES US FROM ALL SIN”
-VERSE 9 “CLEANSES US FROM ALL UNRIGHTEOUSNESS”
JOHN IS TELL US HERE THAT WE HAVE A SAVIOR....HIS NAME IS JESUS.
he is faithful…just....forgiving....But there is a conditional clause here, right.
IF WE CONFESS?
What is confession?
-Now remember…john has linked verse 9 with verse 7.
-In verse 7 he speaks to us about walking in the light...
-Verse 8 he tells us that if we say we have no sin…we are deceiving ourselves.
-then verse 9 we have this word about confession.
-Verse 10…if we claim we have not sinned, we make him a liar...
John is contrasting parallel concepts
-His point is Confessing our sins is the opposite of claiming to have no sin and lying to ourselves.
-Confessing our sins is the opposite of saying we have not sinned and calling God a liar.
-So confession is when we get honest with ourselves and with God...
-It is to acknowledge what they heritics in Asim Minor would not....
-Sin is still an issue in our lives.
-That sometimes we fight and claw and war against sin, but we slip, stumble, and fall daily.
-And the saved man HATES THAT.
-he doesnt delight in his sin…he hates it.
-So he comes to Christ…acknowledging his sin to God.
-DOes God already know? HE SURE DOES...
-BUT HE DESIRES TO SEE YOU TRANSFORMED
-HE IS WILLING TO FORGIVE BECUASE OF HIS LOVE…ABLE TO FORGIVE BECAUSE OF THE CROSS....but have you confessed?
For the believer there is
-Confession is found other places in the Bible.
-Confession is always directed toward God primarily, but others secondarily.
-When was the last time you sit down with God and just came clean?
-Describing the ministry of JOhn the Baptist.
-What i mean is you do not need a priest or a minister to
-People were confessing their sins as they came to be baptised
- people are commanded to confess their sins to one another and pray for each other.
-
-
-The over the last year
-How often do you do it?
-Did you know that the tense of the verb “confess” indicates and ongoing confession...
How does he cleanse us from all unrighteousness?
Remember the link between 9 and 7?
LOOK AT VERSE 7....THE BLOOD OF JESUS HIS SON Cleanses us...
This group are those would believe they have NEVER SINNED.
