In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet: “Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say, ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes? Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the Lord. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the Lord. Work, for I am with you, declares the Lord of hosts, according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not. For thus says the Lord of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land. And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of hosts. The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the Lord of hosts. The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the Lord of hosts.’ ”

The fomer glory of the Temple
Solomon had the Temple build with all its gradure
The temple court yards had been full of people
The present condition of the Temple
It was a shaddow of its former glory
It was 4 centuries since the former Temple had been built
Assessment can be Discouraging
In the seventh month, on the twenty-first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of Haggai the prophet:
Almost a month after the building work had recommenced
God provides a word of encouragement
“Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and to all the remnant of the people, and say, ‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How do you see it now? Is it not as nothing in your eyes?
It was 60 years after the temple had been destroyed
“Who is left among you who saw this house in its fomer glory?”
“How do you see it now? is i not as nothing in your eyes?”
18 years prior...
But many of the priests and Levites and heads of fathers’ houses, old men who had seen the first house, wept with a loud voice when they saw the foundation of this house being laid, though many shouted aloud for joy, so that the people could not distinguish the sound of the joyful shout from the sound of the people’s weeping, for the people shouted with a great shout, and the sound was heard far away.
Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the Lord. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the Lord. Work, for I am with you, declares the Lord of hosts, according to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt. My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not.

Be strong/powerful beyond the average/expected
confidence / determination
External Discouragment
Joshua told to “be Strong & Courageous” [face danger oir fear without flinching] when facing mortal danger
Internal Discouragement
Here they are called to “be Strong and work”
“reject despondency, despair, and pessimism”
1 Chronicles 28:20 “Then David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous and do it [do the work]. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed, for the Lord God, even my God, is with you. He will not leave you or forsake you, until all the work for the service of the house of the Lord is finished.”
“According to the covenant that I made with you when you came out of Egypt”
“My Spirit remains in your midst. Fear not.”
The two buildings were different manifestations of the one same temple
For thus says the Lord of hosts: Yet once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth and the sea and the dry land.
Nothing evades the might of God
And I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in, and I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of hosts.
Isaiah pictured the wealth of the nations being diverted to bless “Jerusalem”
Isaiah 60:5 “Then you shall see and be radiant; your heart shall thrill and exult, because the abundance of the sea shall be turned to you, the wealth of the nations shall come to you.”
“I will shake all nations, so that the treasures of all nations shall come in”
Haggai pictures the same image that God will provide all that is necessary
“I will fill this house with glory, says the Lord of hosts”
The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the Lord of hosts.
This addresses the how and our perspective
The latter glory of this house shall be greater than the former, says the Lord of hosts. And in this place I will give peace, declares the Lord of hosts.’ ”

We should not dispise the day of small things...
Zechariah 4:10 “For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. “These seven are the eyes of the Lord, which range through the whole earth.””
