8 Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.
9 For this, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
11 Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed.
12 The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.
13 Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual promiscuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy.
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.
8 Owe nothing to anyone except to love one another; for he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.
Paul is not prohibiting the borrowing of what is needed. Be he is cautioning careless debt.
He is also coming from a time when if you borrowed and the lender wanted full payment back at any point and you didn’t have full payment, they could jail you.
I once read an account of Samual Wesley who said something that offended someone of a different political position that he also owed money. He found himself in debtors prison after it.
Paul is telling his readers to in short limit anything that someone can hold against you.
Paul writes something similar in
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.
Paul is a mission minded guy, if it is something that one can control and has the power to limit the gospel mission, it needs to go.
What are some areas in life that limit us?
9 For this, “You shall not commit adultery, You shall not murder, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, it is summed up in this saying, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
By loving our neighbor we are fulfilling the Law and living Holy lives.
To really dig his point in on this Paul cites 4 of the Ten Commandments dealing with human relations.
Long before we ever speak of the Gospel people see how we live out our walk with Jesus.
If we are living out the Love of Jesus within us we are not going to murder, steal, wish we had Jessie’s Girl, our sleep around.
Adultery is hating ourselves, our spouse, the one we are cheating with, and even the maker of the bodies we are using.
As Christians we are not our own, but His. Also part of what makes marriage so beautiful is we are telling someone else I am not my own but I am now apart of you.
11 Do this, knowing the time, that it is already the hour for you to awaken from sleep; for now salvation is nearer to us than when we believed.
Today is the day
Kairos: season, era, opportunity.
Paul is stressing that the time for us to start living Holy is almost up. The Old “I’ll settle down when I’m older”
I want to research this Christianity more before I commit…
We are not guaranteed tomorrow…
A man who most called good had a friend who kept trying to tell him about Jesus. He would always say I’m not sure about it, I need to research more… after years of this he got off shift after working nights laid down and never woke up after having a massive heart failure.
His time had passed. His chances missed and I may never see him again…
12 The night is almost gone, and the day is near. Therefore let us lay aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.
Paul drives the urgency of salvation in even harder here.
The gospel calls us to repent and turn away from our sinful ways.
This includes those who know Jesus but haven’t been living it.
As a middle schooler I wouldn’t tell others of Jesus because of how bad I was, I didn’t want to give Him a bad name…
my mom wouldn’t even let me wear my WWJD bracelet because I wasn’t living right, even though I wanted it to remind me daily.
Then at camp one year the Holy Spirit got a hold of me, I understood that day that I didn’t have to be perfect, I just had to step out and keep stepping His way…
13 Let us behave properly as in the day, not in carousing and drunkenness, not in sexual prom-is-cuity and sensuality, not in strife and jealousy. 14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.
A call to Scriptutal Holiness:
To have the reverences of Isaiah “Man of unclean lips of a people of unclean lips
To have the faith of Abraham of not known where you are going but knowing who is calling and leading
To have the heart of David to run back to the Lord and cry make in me a clean heart oh God…
To have the heart of the man who came to Jesus and prayed to help his unbelief…
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ…
This phrase summarizes total sanctification, the continuing spiritual process in which those who have been saved by faith are transformed into His image and likeness
The imagery here Paul of the process of taking off and putting on clothing, which can be argued as symbolic of thoughts and behavior so as to give no provision for the flesh…
The word for provision Pronoia means to plan ahead or give forethought.
Most sinful behavior starts in the mind, Thoughts and lustful desires we allow to linger in our minds.
